I’m in for Saturday,?

Gents,

Would like to get together on Saturday, June 15 (the weekend before FD) to get the laptops we’ll use for FD set up with the latest versions of N1MM and WSJT-X and set up and test rig interface, networking, Seems like every year there are a few wrinkles that need to be ironed out, and it’s best to figure it out early enough that we can get anything else we may need before FD weekend.? How about 1:30 or so (and maybe a lunch gathering before).

Eddie and I can make it.? How about Jeff?? Larry?? Others are welcome as well if you want to test drive the software.

Generally it takes an hour or two, except for those wrinkles.? ?? The pool will be warm and the beer cold, so hang out a bit if youd like.

Also, mark your calendar for FD setup on Friday, June 21.? Ill take care of getting the wire antennas up, and other folks can get all the radios and computers playing together nicely.? If we start around 9:30 we can take a break around 1:00 for some lunch, and should have everything done by supper time.? Depending on how we feel, we can order some carry out for dinner, or go grab a bit somewhere.? Ultimate goal is to have everything working and ready to copy ARRL CW and digital bulletins Friday evening.

What time for computer setup on Saturday, Dave?

What do I need to bring with me?

I used my 9100 with a vertical tri-band antenna. I have heard the birds before but could never get the rig to cooperate to get the split just right. I finally got my ducks in a row and it worked. I have tracked a few others and will play with the SSB birds between now and FD.

?

I have one of the arrow antennas but don’t think that I can talk Rhoda into standing out in the yard pointing it in the direction I called out ?. I guess I need to find someone to put together a AZ-EL controller……

Another update on the ARRL cyber attack.

?

Some of you have been asking where the info comes from that it was ransomware, or that a ransom was paid.? I’m the one who shared that with Jeff 1, because that is what I heard in the ARRL forum at the Atlanta Hamfest.? Bicycle John KB4SLV and I were at the forum,? Mickey Baker shared info on a number of recent happenings at ARRL.? Among other things, he shared that he was particularly opposed to taking the printed magazine away from those like me who had 2 plus years left on a three year renewal.? He then discussed the cyber attach, said it was a ransomware attack, and said the ransom was paid.? I looked at John and said “did he just say they PAID the ransom?”? John said that’s what he heard.? Mickey went on to say that maybe there was some kharma involved, since coincidentally the amount of the ransom was about what it would have cost to have mailed those QSTs.?

?

That’s about all the detail I heard.?

?

I’m a bit puzzled why ARRL isn’t saying the same thing in communications to members if Board members are sharing that at hamfest forums.? Maybe one hand doesn’t know what the other is doing.? I also can’t shake the sense that ARRL isn’t being completely forthright about all this.? That’s just my opinion, I may be wrong.?

?

Outside the forum I asked Mickey when he thought LOTW might be back on line.? He guestimated it would be another month (from then, not from the onset in May).? So maybe late June or early July.?

?

In the immortal words of Forrest Gump, “That’s all I have to say about that”.?

MEMBER BULLETIN

?

June 6, 2024

?

Dear ARRL member,

?

We are writing to inform you of a serious incident that has impacted ARRL’s operations. On or around May 12, 2024, ARRL was the victim of a sophisticated network attack by a malicious international cyber group. We immediately involved the FBI and engaged with third party experts to investigate.

?

On May 16, on the eve of the ARRL National Convention in Ohio, we posted a notice on our website to inform members about the incident. Since then, we have made substantial progress to mitigate the impact of this attack on our organization. We have been posting regular updates, including the status of restored services. Please refer to our dedicated news post at .

?

We are aware that certain members believe we should be openly communicating everything associated with this incident. We are working with industry experts, including cyber crime attorneys and the authorities, who have directed us to be conservative and cautious with our communications while restoring the ARRL network.

?

Many of our services and programs have been impacted by this attack. We have been diligently assessing each system to ascertain the extent of compromise. For example, while the Logbook of The World? server and related user data were unaffected, we have taken the precautionary measure of keeping the service offline until we can ensure the security and integrity of our networks. Similarly, access to Online DXCC is unavailable, although individual award data remains secure.

?

Fortunately, some of our key systems, such as the ARRL website and our association membership system, were unaffected. Despite the severity of the attack, no personal information was compromised. Additionally, ARRL does not store credit card information anywhere on our systems, and we do not collect social security numbers.

?

Our Directors have heard from some members who are concerned about managing their membership renewals. Members can renew online at or by phoning ARRL.

?

We understand the frustration and inconvenience this incident has caused, and we sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding as our dedicated staff and partners continue to work tirelessly to restore affected systems and services.

?

Thank you for your ongoing support.
