End Poverty in Essex County, One Family at a Time

Hello!

Hello!

I am excited to share a high impact volunteer opportunity that?kicks off in?February.

Economic disparities are striking in Essex County.? Nearly one in five children in our county live in poverty.? We've all contributed to various drives or volunteered at food banks, which do make a difference, but fall far short of?helping families achieve lasting economic self-sufficiency.

A program called??run by the Montclair-based nonprofit Family Promise of Essex offers a radical new approach.? The program provides a 3 month training program followed by an 18 month period of intentional relationship building across income lines.? "Allies" walk alongside "Leaders" as they work to overcome poverty.? This is a tested model?that?has been used for over 25 years in Circles programs across the US. On average, participants increase their income by 75%.

I was part of the very first Circles cohort in Essex County where I was matched with three other Allies and a struggling single?mom of three.? Ultimately, our Circle Leader was able to get job?training, embark on a new career, get her kids in better schools, and find more stable and affordable housing.? I came away with my eyes opened to the many obstacles she was up against and so impressed by her tenacity to?create a better life for her kids.

If you are interested in being part of the 2nd??cohort, please reach out to Circles Program Coordinator, Gabe Sahyoun at?gabriel@....? There are additional volunteer opportunities available beyond the Ally role.

Regards,
Mitali

IKEA Delivery Mistake - Free bookcases

I ordered this bookcase from IKEA.? The order came yesterday in?two heavy?boxes.? Each box has the bookcase sides and shelves but is missing the backs. IKEA will resend the correct items to me but will not take away the already delivered items. IKEA says it is not worth the cost to them to pick up the returned items and that I can keep them. So if anyone wants these let me know.? I am not sure if IKEA sells the backs separately. A handy person could perhaps make the backs or use the shelving without the back. Be creative!?

Please contact me if you want these. I hate to waste stuff.?

Re: Medicare Advisor Needed

A few months ago a woman gave an excellent presentation about Medicare options at the Library for the MILL.??
She was very knowledgeable and helpful.
I'm not sure if I can still find her contact info, but if you are still looking for advice I can try to get it from someone. Or you might ask MPL adult services.

I need to find a math tutor for my boys currently in 8th grade to help them prep for the midterms. They're both usually good in math, just struggling with slopes at the moment. 2 or 3 sessions should cover it. $50/hr. Thanks.

Re: Medicare Advisor Needed

A good resource is SHIP -The State Health Insurance Assistance Program, that provides free help regarding Medicare benefits, policies etc. , using trained volunteer counselors.? ?The program is part of the NJ?Dept. of Human Services.? ?I used the service when I was signing up for Medicare and found it to be very helpful in explaining the process,?and options.? In addition to explaining how the system works and the various options, my counselor walked me through the process of signing up, as I was on the Medicare site.? The? counselors don't endorse any specific? company or plan, but provide info to assist in making your own decisions.

Good luck!

Re: Medicare Advisor Needed

I had great experiences with United Medicare Advisors. I was helped by two different guys named Luke -- Luke Gysel and Luke Siler. You can probably request a woman if you call the main number.?
