Does anybody out there remember a company called "ESR" in Montclair during 
the 60's.  they made a game called "Dr. Nimm" it was a "computer"game.  
Actually all plastic with marbles, you pressed the button a couple marbles 
rolled down, then Dr. Nimm  took his turn.  I played that thing for hours on 
end as a kid and bought it a J. L. Meyers 5 and dime.  I'm curious if anyone 
knows what happened to ESR or if anyone else remembers Dr. Nimm.  

This is trivia, certainly compared to the political discussions, if it's not 
appropriate let me know and I'll refrain from my Montclair childhood 
memories..

Nice to see so many people joining in.  That should assure a wide 
array of topics for conversation.  I suggest we each make an effort 
to bring new people on board.  I also appreciate learning about who 
is signing on, even though I know most of you.

A new request - is anyone interested, or do you know anyone who might 
be interested, in participating in a focus group on the Montclair 
Arts Plan?  It's an opportunity to not only raise issues, but design 
outcomes.

Hi!

My name is Clyde Sweatt and I think this is a great idea. I am a 
Deputy Manager for the Township and a resident for the past fourteen 
years. I also serve on Montclair's Civil Rights Commission and have 
been very active in the community in different capacities during my 
time in Montclair.

Looking down the group's membership list I see the names of a number 
of people who I've worked with over the years and have great respect 
for. I look forward to sharing thoughts with all of you.

Hello all,

I'm Rocco Miscia, a Captain with the Montclair PD.  Until 
Monday, I am in charge of the Professional Standards Office 
wtihin the department.  Starting Monday, I will be the 
Investigation Division Commander (in charge of all plain 
clothes units).  

Although I no longer live in town, I grew up here and still consider 
Montclair my home (when asked where I'm from, you can guess the 
answer...) ;-)

This is an excellent forum to hear about the concerns, suggestions, 
and general 'beefs' of fellow Montclairites.

Glad that this electronic 'backyard fence' was started.

David Letterman said he likes to go in to the voting booth, take off his 
pants, hand them to the clerk and ask for a size 34.  I wish I had the

Thanks for the reminder. I actually did vote today ... well sort of. I got 
into the voting booth, all ready to vote for Corzine, and found that all the 
keys were locked!  The helpers said, "Of course they're locked. You're not a 
registered Democrat!" 

Well, my party didn't have anyone I was very interested in ... so I didn't 
vote for anyone.Then I found that I couldn't pull the curtain back! Stuck in 
the voting booth ...! I couldn't believe it....I finally had to throw my vote 
to someone I REALLY didn't care about just to get out of there. Oh, well. 
I'll do better in November, I guess.

I'm stopping in at Montclair Books tonight, looking for a copy of "Voting for 
Dummies."

job with their sidewalk, which had heaved due to tree roots. They relaid the 
stones around the tree and planted hosta (and some other low plants, as I 
remember). It looks terrific. They didn't damage the tree by cutting into the 
roots and the sidewalk takes an interesting little turn through some nice 
landscaping. You should drive by and take a peek. It seemed like  great 
solution. Don't they cut through the roots to lay concrete too?

Mary, you are so right.
There is a public lack of information on the fact that bluestone can be
easily and cheaply relaid and is then far better than concrete.  But what
about tree roots?  Do you cut them back to allow the sidewalk to be flat?
If you build up the grade at the tree roots, the bluestone would have to be
sliced into smaller pieces to ease up over the roots, which I cant picture
being done properly on a regular basis.  What is appropriate?

I think the salvaging issue is very important.  We should find out what
happens to the stuff.  Maybe the concrete sidewalk paving companies have a
side business?

That's great! Thanks to the HPC for advocating the preservation ofbluestone

sidewalks? The Park Street project is a case in point. They have been
removed. But by whom? Who has benefitted from salvaging them? Were they --

Private property owners have the responsibility to maintain the sidewalks,as
I understand it. It is one of the reasons why we are losing them at suchan
alarming rate. I have been told that some iInsurance companies haveinformed

tripping on displaced sidewalk flags. Therefore, homeowners ... ratherthan
re-setting the stones ... resort to what has proved to be a relatively
short-term solution: replacing them with concrete sidewalks.

Concrete has a useful life, in this climate, of 20-30 years. Bluestone, if
properly set, a useful life of 200+ years. The problems with bluestonehave
to do with uneven settlement and displacement by tree roots, which causes
them to crack. By resetting them, you can get another 100 yrs useful life.
AND you have the added property value resulting from "historicambiance" --
yes, intangible, but valuable nonetheless.

I think that some public education on this issue would alert propertyowners
-- and the township -- as to the intrinsic value of these historicmaterials.
