Re: Montclair's oral history

Does anyone know Elaine Davis's email -- she needs to be a part of Watercooler! I know of two projects, one in the Cayman Islands (Cayman Brac) and another in Westfield NJ (I am sure there are others ...) that have conducted a local oral history project. The results have been varied, of course, depending on the commitment of the folks heading up the project. At the very least, it could generate some good tapes of people talking about their memories of the town. I was at the 12 Miles West fundraising event last night. Sitting next to me was a wonderful man, who talked about his "bachelor years" at the 3 Crowns Restaurant in the Hinck Building (now Claridge Theatre). He said that the proprietor (by the name of Pierson (Pearson?) was in charge of the Swedish Pavilion at the World's Fair 1939 (NYC). He came from there to Montclair and set up 3 Crowns (circa 1940s - late 1950s) His wife carried on the business after his death -- through the 1970s? Now for anyone who is a fan of World's Fair History, like I am, this has set me off on a whole new world of research! How can you beat having resources like this? I might search town records (and maybe even the Montclair Times archives...) and not find this kind of anecdote. Now to prove that it has some basis in fact.... well, that's another story. Nevertheless, it is an important thread (or myth) of town history. I'd love to hear from someone who knows... George? In the meantime, I am off to the library.... Mary Krugman |
Re: Montclair's oral history
Dear Mary,
I agree about the oral history project..............with all of the schools in our community.........especially MSU..(not to mention approximately 700 Di Geronimos)......the staffing resources are here.......it would be such a legacy..........Kevin Allen's (a member of of Fire Department) grandmother just passed.....she was 96 years old and more active in our community than most 40 and 50 year olds.........there were stories galore at her wake this week.........let's kick this off.................terry |
Hello, Thank you, Mary, for the invitation
Donato DiGeronimo
Hello all,
I know and recognize many of you from seeing you around town, working with you, or hearing about your work for Montclair. I am Donato (Donnie) DiGeronimo. I was born and raised in Montclair. My family has been here since 1902 (Over 700 relatives, most born and raised in Montclair). I first met Mary while serving as a member of the committee for the Montclair 125th anniversary yearbook. I had the great privilege of accompanying her while she interviewed long time Montclair residents, of different ethnic backgrounds, for their differing perspectives on growing up in Montclair. Mary did an excellent job on the essays. I am a great admirer of her work. I have been a member of the Montclair Fire Department for the past 22 years, serving as president of the Montclair Firefighters Mutual Benevolent Association (FMBA)for the last 8 years. I am currently chairperson of the Celebrate Montclair Festival, on the advisory board of MEDC, and recently elected to the newly reconstituted board of the Montclair Downtown Alliance (MDA)(an organization made up of merchants, businesses and organizations in the Downtown area). I love Montclair, and I am particularly interested in preserving its history, but, also, I appreciate the great energy and optimism brought by the new arrivals over the past 15 to 20 years. Thank you for the invitation to the group. I hope to be a positive addition. Donnie |

I loved sitting around the kitchen table talking to your Aunt Julia (?) and your other relatives, talking about the early days on Pine Street. Interviewing the long-time residents was such a treat. What a resource they are. We should develop a town oral history project to get their stories recorded somewhere. Mary |
Re: Town Signage
Linda Wanat
The Township Parking committee has been reviewing the
signage issue for sometime , especially with reference to public parking lots. Perhaps we could hold a "one-shot" meeting with all interested parties (municipality, Chamber, Medc, etc.) to work out a coordinated effort. One missing piece appears to be funding...any ideas? --- MDK10@... wrote: In a message dated 6/5/2000 11:33:28 PM Eastern __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! In the 60's I was in Jr. High, as it was then called and High School, in Closter, the "hub of the Northern Valley" and Englewood, respectively. If you visit Closter you will figure out why, as a teenager, I found Montclair so compelling. I will more fully reflect my ignorance by recalling that NIM has something to do with math, or something like that. it's not appropriate let me know and I'll refrain from my Montclairchildhood memories..Oh, George, I don't think there is anything trivial about memory. It links us to our own past --- permits us to exist, representationally, at least, in more than three dimensions --- creates ways for us to connect with other people. Memory is the core of poetry. And, in this forum, I think Montclair memories are especially wonderful. Jessica |

Hello from Orfee
Hi Folks:
Just wanted to introduce myself -- Orfee as in Orpheus, my favorite orchestra. I am Nancy Barry and I direct Unity Concerts. Am also involved with the Montclair Arts Plan. I want to second Jessica's request that you attend the focus groups at the end of the month. We need as many people involved as possible. As a native of a small New England town I am enjoying this ad hoc town meeting. Especially love the blue stones sidewalks. Take care, Nancy |

The protruding poles were severed and the signs are now flush with the top of each pole. The design of the signs is entirely another matter of taste of which we felt we could not comment on -- even though most of us felt that they garish at best. Keep 'em comin'! Unfortunately, I don't have any information about ESM or Dr. Nimm. It's amazing how important certain games are as we were growing up, though. I lusted after my friend's marble game "Labyrinth" -- you had to manuever a steel ball through a maze on a turn table. Definitely low tech. It was one of the first games I bought my sons when they got old enough for it. They never cared one whit for it though.... they liked action figures better, which are now their own "classic" childhood memory toys. Mary |

The issue of coordinated signage around town was one discussed in the recent municipal campaign. Adriana O'Toole thought that there was a need to improve signage around town. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how signs can be improved? I was just in Westfield this week and was paying special attention to how visitors were directed to "Downtown Westfield." Michael La Place, former Montclair Assistant Planner, is now the Ex. Director of Downtown Westfield Corporation -- that community's version of the Montclair Economic Development Committee. The signs were his doing --- they're great! Very clear and of good design. How can Montclair improve its signage? Is MEDC working on this? Any MEDC representatives on Watercooler? If not, can we invite some? Mary |
The Montclair Times
Hivish, Kathy
Hi everyone!
Now that Mark Porter and I have had time to digest your exchange, we've dusted ourselves off and welcome the opportunity to participate in MtcWatercooler. Initially, we promise to be great "listeners." Be it on The Times or other issues of importance to those who hold Montclair near and dear to their hearts, the candid feedback will enlighten us to what you're thinking and provide food for thought on effecting positive change. I fondly remember one of my first invites, back in May of '98, over breakfast at Sunrise with Michael Puglisi and Kevin Allen. Their passion for Montclair was evident, but what came through loud and clear from both was, "There are 37,000 residents in Montclair, all with strong opinions about something or other. Over time, you're going to hear from most of them." Truer words never spoken. The other thing that stuck with me from week one was, "You may think your company owns The Montclair Times, but it doesn't. It belongs to everyone in the greater community. Don't ever forget that." It was Anna DiSalvo Henderson, who would make a great contributor to this exchange, who spoke for all in Montclair early on. Beyond "listening," we promise to discuss what we see on your exchanges, including comments aimed directly at your hometown newspaper. Remember, our doors are always open to meet personally with any member(s) of the greater community. We're only a phone call (746-1100) or email away. You can reach Mark Porter direct at porterm@... <mailto:porterm@...> or myself at hivish@... <mailto:hivish@...> . Solid dialog, in most cases, makes for positive change. Regarding our branding, our Montclair office serves as business headquarters (billing circulation) for our 6 other Essex County publications. Hence North Jersey Community Newspapers vs. The Montclair Times. We share your sensitivity on that. And, believe it or not, we do have a police scanner in our newsroom. :-) |
Does anyone remember??
Does anybody out there remember a company called "ESR" in Montclair during
the 60's. they made a game called "Dr. Nimm" it was a "computer"game. Actually all plastic with marbles, you pressed the button a couple marbles rolled down, then Dr. Nimm took his turn. I played that thing for hours on end as a kid and bought it a J. L. Meyers 5 and dime. I'm curious if anyone knows what happened to ESR or if anyone else remembers Dr. Nimm. This is trivia, certainly compared to the political discussions, if it's not appropriate let me know and I'll refrain from my Montclair childhood memories.. Thanks for the read. George |
