Re: February Recap
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýOK, I will have to say that the CoPilot attempt at a secure Node Express server handling multiple apps was spot on, including certs & keys - would need some flushing out, but it was clean, concise, and would work right out of the box. Perhaps with more iterations and refinements it would do everything you might want. We didn't have time to try something like proxying - I like to do
this with CouchDB so that it is being served locally and not
accessible from outside. Or maybe setting up logging. These are
cleanly done in node and maybe CoPilot could handle this 'No
Problemo'. HOWEVER, I think that most Angular developers would be
disappointed with the result. The code really didn't follow normal
structure, also had wierd stuff stuck here and there and would
need a lot of scrutiny and fixing to be comfortable with it.
Angular's scaffolding generates a clean app and generating
components, directives, and services is pretty simple. The CouchDB
service was bare, just returning observables and did not handle
errors. We did ask it to have the db service return promises
instead of observables, but it croaked on this. I would say that
we are not CoPilot experts in the least and a lot of study and
testing might improve our result but it might be easier to just
use Angular's toolset and do the app. We also had trouble getting front-end output to conform to
material design and I think it should really understand this. We didn't ask for a complex app and maybe I'll play with this and see how it handles an app with routing containing child routes and how well it does separating state into some service and how well it deals with signal(), effect(), and model() and how it handles passing data between components (when I get some time...). So using CoPilot one can code using normal english but when it
comes to classes, interfaces, front-end presentation, logic, etc -
you still have to SAY IT with enough exact precision to get a
result - why not just code it. If someone has time, see how it
handles a rust app, I'd be very interested... I guess I don't see this getting rid of ER, DFD & state
diagrams or somehow eliminating the tough work of getting an app
out of design. This is a somewhat scary tool - just watch the movie 'Wall.e' to
see what we might become...! Anyway, was a good meeting and the 'Chicago Dog' was fine indeed
(really was COLD though)... On 2/19/25 10:53 AM, Eric Selje via

February Recap
Despite the frigid Wisconsin cold, we had a good meeting last night.? I demonstrated VS Code's new CoPilot features. To test it we asked the AI to create an angular app from scratch w/ some special attributes, including connecting to a CouchDB server. It took a few refinements to get a result that we liked, and Cliff is convinced he could have cranked one out quicker with the command line but that's because he's an experienced Angular dev. I know I couldn't have.? We also had it create a simple multi-app node.js application, which it scaffolded quite nicely. We tested a few iterations of code edits, accepting or rejecting its suggestions. Overall a very impressive beginning to what will certainly revolutionize coding. We've already heard that there are companies who are no longer hiring junior devs, as a senior dev embellished with these AI tools are more productive. It's an interesting time to be starting your developer career. Afterwards we drove down to Hot Dog Avenue for some Chicago dogs and more. I still have heartburn from the chili. See ya next month, in what will be the beginning of our 31st year! Eric |
