Re: Meeting recap

A footnote on my nonprofit app demo:

?

One feature I showed was the donor receipt letter which had the recipient¡¯s address positioned to show up in a window envelope.? ?I noted that I had bought single-window envelopes (since that¡¯s what Walmart had in stock) so I planned to put return addresses on by running each envelope through my laser printer.? Jim warned that might be a problem if the windows were made of plastic film due to the heat of the laser rollers.? I said I¡¯d tried one and it seemed to work fine but figured I¡¯d better do some more testing,? So I ran through another half dozen envelopes when I got home.? The first one came through OK, but subsequent envelopes got increasingly distorted as things heated up and the plastic shrank.? So I went ahead and special ordered a box of double-window envelopes (which a should have done in the first place) ¨C that should allow both he return and recipient addresses to show through from the letter.?

?

Thanks to Jim for the heads up ¨C I¡¯m glad I caught this now and not next week when I¡¯m trying to get the receipts sent out before the end of the year.

?

If anyone needs some single-window envelopes I¡¯ll make you a good deal¡

With the revelation that some folks are still tuning in, here's a meeting recap from December 2023:

?

4 people attended in person: Eric, Stein, Cliff, and Jim.

1 person attended remotely:? Jack

(If you tell us you want to attend remotely, we'll turn on the Google Meet)

?

Cliff gave a demonstration of his interface to the OpenAI API. He wrote a UI that lets the user tweak settings such as "Temperature" to fine tune the type of results you get. We ran some queries using "One Shot" and then using templates to get repeatable results formatted properly. He explained the billing, via "tokens" which you may want to constrain to keep costs down.

?

Stein is transforming his nonprofit project from a VFP Windows app to a web (Vue.js) and West Wind application. We did a little troubleshooting to figure out why the app that worked perfectly on one PC crashed when he moved it to his laptop (ended up forcing a recompile by changing a function signature which we think was the solution).

?

There's still work to do. We talked about the security implications of adding a file upload to the app vs doing it via CPanel.

?

Eric briefly demonstrated the Advent of Code project, which are essentially word problem challenges for developers. It'd be fun to try to solve these using FoxPro if I had the extra time.

?

Jim reiterated the advantages of doing business locally.

?

That wraps up our 2023 year. I think we only missed one meeting this year due to the timing of Southwest Fox.? The dates for VFF and Southwest Fox 2024 have been announced so look for an email from Rick Schummer soon and hopefully we'll see some of you there!
