changes since Covid
Have you all found things you used to do on the computer have changed during Covid ?
In my case lots of stuff ceased amongst the bellydancers - so communication abruptly died and some translated to doing stuff in Zoom but not successfully really. As a result there was no web page updating or posters and flyers etc. The girls seem to have translated themselves to Facebook and web pages became static so I trimmed them right back to the point of being easy to take down. Just a token presence really. I am handing back things to let other people get on with them.? Even a lot of slides and diagrams I was doing has gone by the by with no international conferences on and everything that goes on Zoom has naturally to be simplified....doesn't really lend itself to some things on screen when you know people are viewing on iPhones and iPads etc. As I am in the retired category and no longer out to work, I am looking about to find myself something interesting to do for myself that I might find absorbing instead of doing things for other people. I have just about decided to buy the next iPad Pro and teach myself art on it and who knows where that might go - or not. Might be able to value add on that idea. ?I used to draw a lot as a child and painted watercolours so I see it as a bit of a throwback.? My late stepfather used to buy me Eagle comics and things like that as he liked the illustrations and I was always drawing - I think I was his excuse for buying them.? The local Mac group are trying to get me interested in taking over the club website - I have been resisting on the basis the guy who built now is now deceased and its hanging on by a thread, and pull the wrong thread and it could all collapse and is showing signs it could be about to break. It was all coded and there's lots of php behind it. It started doing something odd the other day and I have been communicating with the hosting to try to sort it out for them as to reason things are happening but the advice seems to be various things have not been updated and running old php etc and maybe start again with WP. I am doing my best to avoid it. ?I don't want to be the one in charge when the empire collapses :-) I have done my share of retrieving web sites when people have paid good money and the site walks along with the person who built it but I am doing my best to swerve this one at the moment.? ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýOh, a fellow Eagle reader? I used to read Eagle and, later, Girl too, having started out on Mickey Mouse Weekly plus, occasionally, Dandy and Beano. I still have some Eagle Annuals but they are modern printings not valuable antiques! When it comes to magazines, I used to read Cosmopolitan before it became as obsessed with sex as it apparently now is, but regular magazines were PC Gamer and PC Gaming World, you get the picture! That is how i got into playing EverQuest and boy it was hard back then: no maps for starters, no idea where any of the quest givers were, people just passed on the info between them. I started taking the odd Mac magazine on an irregular basis, eventually subscribing to MacFormat but with Computeractive (fortnightly) as well. ?I¡¯ve just drifted out of MacFormat, as it was becoming increasingly irrelevant to someone with years-old gear and ignoring the latest OS because it zaps some of my favourite applications. I did transfer, for my last MacFormat year, to the digital version but did not renew that. Future Publishing tried to reactivate my Direct Debit for a new paper subscription but I quickly put a stop to that, so now it¡¯s just Computeractive, which does deal with Mac gear and answer Mac users¡¯ queries too. During lockdown, they offered subscribers access to an online edition, as they had occasional problems with their paper deliveries, although I never needed that. I do prefer the paper mag, although of course online editions mean you can enlarge the parts that ageing eyes find hard to read!? ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI read Eagle, both where we lived in the Middle East (Bahrain, Aden and Mukalla) and at boarding school. ?In fact, in Bahrain I was a Wolf Cub and another Cub lent me various annuals, but as I walked home I was ¡°mugged¡± but some Arab boys who stole the books. ?My antipathy to Arabs might have started then ;-) ?I haven¡¯t told that story for many years, but actually it¡¯s the political systems in Arab countries that I have a problem with, as I do with Israel¡¯s policies (mainly towards Arabs).Look and Learn was an excellent magazine as well . . .
