Re: New iMac

I haven’t updated to Cataline so far; I get the impression it is really for those who use their Macs for work purposes, not for dabblers like me!

Went for fusion drive. Can't say I noticed much difference in start up time. NB it has no fire wire & no superdrive. You can get an external one.
Can't say I particularly like Catalina either

I had no idea I could have kept iPhoto going. I meekly updated it to Photos, which I’ve been using for some time now, but which lost some of the useful features of iPhoto in the transition. ?This is not a good thing that Apple has done, blithely effectively destroying the functionality of apps that are popular and useful. It should not be up to outsiders to fix this. I suppose a partial, if not too convenient, answer is to keep older kit or to partition your drive into newer and earlier OSes; I don’t even know if the latter is possible.

Oh dear, oh dear, that is very stressful. Is there no landlord responsible for the building? I hope you have a good lock on your door! Best of luck!

Dear All,
I think the noose is beginning to tighten round them. Inevitable when you live that lifestyle. The movie Blow was a pretty good representation of the Medellin cartel. It was sad really because the Californian importer lost contact with his daughter. The neighbour put some sort of gum on the stairs. Actually could have been one of his competitors because he's removed the electromagnetic plates on the communal door. Anyway I slipped & got a limp. Some kids decided to throw stones at me. I said

Re: PLEX

I stream from my iPhone via apps to the Apple TV thing on my bedroom TV. ?Think I need to buy a newer one for the smart tv in the lounge room.
But our internet connection where I am is not very good. On old copper wires almost strung gum tree to gum tree :-)
But we manage. Sometimes too much stuttering to be bothered with stuff off the net.?
But if a video library was contained on a spare HD would be useful perhaps.?
The bloke doing the demo had downloaded a whole lot of English tv programs, so he's not just doing movies.?

Re: PLEX

Thanks for that link, Jude.? Streaming is not something we've yet aspired to but you never know.

Chris is on.

PLEX

Has anyone any experience of Plex and what do you use it for ? ?A bloke talked about it at the last local user group meeting and I couldn't make head nor tail of it apart from the fact he is ripping DVDs and basically got them on a server with access given to his family members.
I looked at it some years ago and was none the wiser back then. I thought initially it was meant to be some sort of catalogue happening. I'm wondering if it has any relevance these days with a lot of stuff being on line anyway though his train of thought seemed to be about the avoidance of free to air tv or anything with adverts running.....that used to be when you made a rush to make a pot or visit the bathroom ?:-)
