Here's a link to 20 photos from some of the Resto Crew activities last weekend, including movement of transformers in the El Ghor passage (supervised by Richard Zoph, who was a member of the team that make the historic connection between the Flint Ridge and Mammoth Cave systems in 1972), and spraying algae with bleach solution along the Domes & Dripstones route and at Crystal Lake. https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/gpee7h3lb47tponzhguk0/h?rlkey=bd6raq386nmgjluzzm0u32x3k&dl=0

March Camp Is Coming Soon
6
Show of hands, who loves El Ghor? Just kidding, we ALL love El Ghor. And guess what, we get what we ask for. While I haven¡¯t gotten official word on the work items for March Camp just yet, my senses are telling me that more El Ghor is in our future. And speaking of March Camp did you know that sign up is just a few short days away? Sign up for March camp begins on February 1st at midnight EST. As of now we are scheduled to be staying at Maple Springs, but you never know what the Ferry Gods will bring. Don¡¯t forget to sign up early to beat the rush. Sign can be found here: https://www.restoremammoth.com/2024-march-camp/ Or visit: https://www.restoremammoth.com Brian

March Resto Camp Update
Hey everybody, we are on the home stretch. Less than a week away from the first Resto Camp of 2024. Just a quick reminder that we will be staying at Maple Springs. The ferry is currently operating with the ¡°new¡± hours of 6:00 am to 6:00 pm, Monday to Friday. 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, Saturday and Sunday. This means hanging out on the south side of the river at night comes with a drive. As such I am suggesting a potluck dinner at Maple Spring for Saturday night for all that can make it. Bring a dish to share and enjoy the camaraderie! Can¡¯t wait to see you all this weekend. Brian

November Camp Update
4
As most of you are aware the tradition for a weekend camp is to visit El Mazatl¨¢n in Cave City for dinner on Saturday night. However, I would propose a different dinner choice for those attending and those in the area that would like to visit on Saturday night. As we are staying at Hamilton Valley, have 31 attendees signed up, many newcomers, and are expecting several ¡°old¡± timers to be in attendance, I would propose a Saturday night potluck dinner at Hamilton Valley. Knowing those attending I¡¯m sure there will be plenty of food to go around so think about joining us Saturday night at Hamilton Valley at 6:00 PM. I feel this will be a great way to meet new people and reconnect with those we haven¡¯t seen in a bit. I can¡¯t wait to see you all there. Brian

Bat article in today's Chicago Tribune
Hey cavers, In this morning's Chicago Tribune there's an article about a map of rabid bats in Cook County (Chicago). A screenshot of the article is attached (and it's pasted below), and the map itself can be found at shorturl.at/ijkpY It's not much, but good to see that 'bats' made Page 4 in the Trib! -Gary :) ================ Halloween-themed map tracks county¡¯s rabid bats Nov. 1, 2023 by Alysa Guffey Chicago Tribune This Halloween, local health officials released a digital map of where bats have tested positive for rabies so residents can be more informed of the spooky animals flying in the night sky. On Tuesday, the Cook County Department of Animal and Rabies Control (ARC) released the interactive map, available at shorturl.at/ijkpY, to raise awareness about rabies prevention and encourage pet owners to vaccinate dogs and cats against the disease. Nine bats have tested positive for rabies in Cook County so far in 2023, according to the map. The nine positive tests occurred between May 11 and Sept. 30. Residents can compare the number and location of identified bats with rabies from data as far back as 2018. A significant number of the identified rapid bats were found inside homes, according to ARC Administrator Mamadou Diakhate, meaning that pets who primarily stay indoors can still be exposed to rabies. ¡°Rabies is a completely preventable disease and is always fatal to unvaccinated pets,¡± said Diakhate in a news release. Rabies left untreated is also ¡°almost always fatal to humans,¡± Diakhate reminded Cook County residents. The disease is transmitted through saliva and spreads when an infected animal scratches or bites another. While rapid bats can pose danger to humans and other animals, bats play a vital role in the county¡¯s ecosystem, said Chris Anchor, senior wildlife biologist for the Forest Preserves of Cook County, in a news release. A half-ounce brown bat can eat half its body weight in insects each night. ¡°Bats are amazing flying mammals that act as important biomonitors, helping to indicate the health of our environment,¡± Anchor said. ###

November Camp Update
2
Just over 10 short days until the start of November camp and it¡¯s looking to be a cracker! We are still finalizing the plans but for now it looks like we will be back in familiar territory with the always fun El Ghor death march. For those returning to camp after a short break, it will be like you never even left :) I will also put it out there for those that have wetsuits we will most likely have a team heading to the river (water level dependent). In addition to hauling and wetsuit teams we will also most likely start a project which is something I have wanted to do for years and years. I¡¯m not going to share it here so either find out about it at camp or wait until after camp updates. Most importantly, we will now be staying at Hamilton Valley. The signup stated Maple Springs but due to the ferry and booking we will be at our second home, Hamilton Valley. If you have any questions about this change, please feel free to reach out to me. I can¡¯t wait to see and catch up with everyone. Brian

2023 November Camp
What¡¯s better than chocolate and peanut butter? November and Resto Camp of course!! That¡¯s right, it¡¯s time again for the greatest Mammoth Cave Restoration Camp on earth. Unfortunately, Eventbrite has switched to a pay only model, so I had to pivot. Fortunately, I demoed my new event signup for weeklong. I think it worked well enough to give it a shot for November Camp. As usual signup for November camp will begin on October 1st 12:00 AM EST. Once again, we will be at our beloved home away from home, Maple Springs. While I don¡¯t know for sure what we have planned, odds are good it will involve at least one trip to El Ghor and I know everyone loves that! But wait, there¡¯s more. Rumors are circulating that weather permitting we could have the greatest bonfire spectacle the camp has ever seen. How¡¯s that you ask? We will see the return of the camps king of fire teaming up with the camps newest pyro. Oh man, I can¡¯t wait. Sign up at the link below or visit restoremammoth.com. https://www.restoremammoth.com/2023-november-camp/ See you in November! Brian

2023 Weeklong Resto Camp Announcement
Hello Resto Cavers, as if this camp wasn¡¯t already shaping up to be a doozy, I have even more exciting news. The ferry is closed due to low water. OK, maybe that¡¯s not exciting, as a matter of fact it¡¯s a real bummer. What this means for camp is that we all need to take this into consideration as we plan the week. Keep in mind that it¡¯s approximately 45 minutes one-way trip to get from Maple Springs to the park. We will all just adapt and take our time, there is nowhere we must be and that¡¯s OK. We will start when we start and likely end our days earlier to accommodate everyone and make sure that no one feels rushed. Can¡¯t wait to see you all Sunday evening for our welcome party. Brian

2023 Weeklong Resto Camp Announcement
2
I have a couple of announcements. Many of you may have noticed, and many found out having recently reached out to me, August camp is full. For the first time in my resto camp career, we have reached our capacity and can no longer accept applications. I have about four people on a waiting list, and I will reach out to them if a spot opens. For those that are signed up, it¡¯s going to be a busy camp. Both the house and bunk house will be full, and we will need to make sure that all beds are used. For those camping or staying off site, well, this doesn¡¯t matter :) Remember that the kitchen in the classroom will be for off limits for personal use during the week. There is a mini fridge in the bunk house and a standard fridge/freezer in the house for personal goods but remember you will be sharing with all camp attendees, please be considerate. It looks like we may have both vertical and wetsuit opportunities this camp. If either of these opportunities interest you and you have the required equipment and proficiency remember to bring your gear. I can¡¯t wait to see you all there for what will surely be a memorable camp. Brian

Weeklong Camp
6
Well, boys and girls, this is shaping up to be one heck of a weeklong camp! First off, I am so excited to see that we have 32 signed up and counting, with many new faces. It¡¯s going to be a busy Maple Springs and I can¡¯t wait. Many would like to know what projects we will be working on for the week and while we are still working out all the details, I can share the following. We will once again be working with our dear friends the James Cavers. We will however be moving our efforts from Coach, where we have been for years, to James Cave. Kevin Mulligan (he didn¡¯t know this before right now, thanks Kevin :) will be leading a vertical group to disassemble some stairs which will be hauled out to the entrance. In addition, we will also be gathering loose wiring and lighting. As always, we will feature our weeklong lint crew with Linda and Pam once again leading the charge. While I can¡¯t share all the details just yet, I will just say, if you have vertical gear, bring it, if you have a wetsuit, bring it. There are a couple of things in the works that should be a blast. As with all camps, things will change as we go. I have also reached out to some amazing people that have lined up some incredible educational trips and can¡¯t wait to share more. For now, I will leave you with this random picture of a hole in the ground :) Don¡¯t forget to bring your appetite and I can¡¯t wait to see you at the Howdy Party at 6 PM on Sunday, August 6th.

August Camp Announcement
Welcome back my friends to the cave that never ends. I hope you can attend come inside, come inside. That¡¯s right, it¡¯s time for the much anticipated 2023 August Camp application! Mark your calendar, put in your vacation request, and get ready to spend a week at Mammoth Cave doing what we love with the people we love to do it with. Onward to August camp! And now for something completely different, I have finally gotten off my keister and made an online application! That means this year there are two ways to sign up and the choice is yours. For those that are supporting the USPS, I have the same PDF application so you can print it off and mail it to me. You can send your money via check, PayPal, or Zelle. Links to both applications can be found at https://www.restoremammoth.com or the links below. Now for the T-Shirt news. Unfortunately, our much-loved friend and artist Bonnie Carnack will no longer be able to create our shirts for us. It¡¯s been a bit of a roller coaster the last couple of years with T-Shirts. I am currently looking for someone to help with the design and printing. I have several options in the works and am hopeful that there will be a shirt for this year's camp. In the event I am unable to get the shirts I will refund the T-Shirt payments. As of now, and unless things change we will be at Maple Springs. Please feel to reach out to me if you have any questions. Love you all and see you in August, it¡¯s gonna be great! May 2023 Resto weekend
2
--oops, the Subject line should have been the MAY Resto weekend also, after further consideration, I'd estimate the total buckets of mud were 150-200 (not 300-400)

March 2023 Resto weekend
Resto Director Brian will provide the official report, but I'd like to offer my account of what happened this past Saturday and Sunday at the 2023 May Mammoth Cave Restoration weekend. Due to asbestos remediation taking place at Maple Springs, we gratefully accepted the kind accomodations of the Cave Research Foundation at their Hamilton Valley Facilities. --thanks, CRF! After getting settled, a couple dozen of us (incl. Larry Matiz!) convened at 'El Tapatio,' the former Sahara Steakhouse which is now a Mexican cuisine restaurant located a short ways from our traditional Cave City eatery, El Mazatlan. Although Tapatio is a bit smaller, the atmosphere, service and quality of food were comparable. On Saturday morning, we met as usual for the 8:30 briefing at the MACA Visitor Center picnic area pavilion. In addition to Rick Toomey, we were joined by Chuck and Mary Schubert, Rick Olson and MACA official 'Ed' (--sorry, I forget his last name). The group heard all about our work tasks for the weekend: to scoop buckets of mud/water from the bottom of Crystal Lake, hoisting them up 70-feet to the Frozen Niagara path and transporting them out of the cave. Another team pressed the mud through mesh screens and picked coins and other objects from the muck as it was washed with water from a tank on the back of a pickup truck. While that operation got underway, a team including Brian, Chuck and your humble narrator took pump sprayers down the 'New Entrance' stairs and lightly applied a 4:1 ratio of bleach solution to any greenish algae-ified spots we came across. Along the way, Brian pointed out the amazing work that had been done at Grand Central (new pavers and benches), the re-done stairway, another re-done area where original flagstones were uncovered and integrated into the path, and some incredible work done at Lover's Leap. We ended up at Frozen Niagara, where Dave Boerma was expertly operating an industrial-strength drill being used to hoist the mud buckets. John Kirk reeled-in the buckets and Dave Seng de-harnessed the containers and staged them for transport out of the cave. The 'dirty work' down at the bottom of the hole was being done by several individuals, including supervisor Rick Toomey, but Teresa Boerma deserves special recognition for her efforts. Nice job, T! Although several individuals helped transport the buckets of mud from the work site to the Frozen Niagara entrance, Roy Van Hooser (along with Deb Nelson and John Sides) did some tireless work for this stage of the operation. After the mud buckets were brought over to the screening area, Dee Boerma, Linda Bundy and Pam Saberton got themselves plenty dirty and wet as they ran the water hose and filtered through the muck. Special mention also should be made of Missy Sides and Rick Olson, who helped identify artifacts worth saving and categorizing. Saturday's dinner was a 'pot luck' back at Hamilton Valley, which featured burgers and brats expertly grilled by chef Dave Boerma (--who also makes a mean biscuits-and-gravy). Sunday was more of the same, except we knocked-off by 12 noon due to some nasty-looking storm clouds that were rolling in. We got done just in time as the rain began falling. All in all, I'd estimate 300-400 buckets of mud were hoisted out of Crystal Lake and sifted/screened. Great job, everyone. See you in August!

May Camp
May Resto Cavers, only 9 days away and I don't know about you, but I can't wait. It's shaping up to be a great camp! Just a reminder to all that we will be staying at Hamilton Valley. Previously I mentioned that we will probably be getting muddy. Well for those that are attending, here's a sneak peek of what might be in store. Can't wait to see you all at Mammoth! Brian

May Resto Camp Signup
2
OK, resto cavers how are we possibly going to top March Camp? I know, let¡¯s make it into the cave! But you can¡¯t make it into the cave if you don¡¯t sign up. Sign up for May Camp starts tonight, or more precisely tomorrow at 12:01 AM. You can find the signup link below or at https://restoremammoth.com. For the May camp, we will be staying at beautiful Hamilton Valley, home of the CRF. We will be sharing the facility with a small group of CRF cavers so if you are not camping or staying in town you may need to bunk up with a friend. While I don¡¯t know everything we will be working on I do know there is the possibility that we will have a pretty awesome objective that will be new to everyone. As I get more details I will share it with the group, but what I do know is that we will need to prepare to get muddy, and not just a little muddy but a lot muddy. If getting muddy in Mammoth sounds like your jam, this is the camp to sign up for. Can¡¯t wait to see you all at Mammoth. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/may-2023-mammoth-cave-restoration-camp-registration-577733505467 Cheers, Brian
