March Resto Camp cancellation --full report 2
For those who might be interested in a more detailed play-by-play, here's what happened at Resto Camp on Friday, Mar. 3, 2023. Most of the few who made it to Maple Springs told me they experienced bad weather getting there --no surprise-- but here's my tale. As I approached the Interstate 24 'on ramp' at Paducah, Kentucky, I rolled down my car window a bit because I thought I heard an ambulace siren that strangely sounded unlike any Chicago-area ambulance siren. But it wasn't an ambulance--it was a city-wide tornado warning siren! I got onto I-24 anyway, thinking I would 'out run' the dark grey clouds in my rear view mirror. I was wrong. Heavy rain overtook me like I'd never experienced it before. Yes, my wipers were on 'high' the entire time, but it nearly didn't matter. Yes, there were cars parked beneath the highway overpasses with their flashers turned on. It wasn't just rainy, but it also was windy like I'd never experienced. All you could do was slow down, be safe, and get there alive --was the mindset of everyone on the road, both car and semi-truck alike. About 30-minutes into the harrowing drive East, there was a medium-sized SUV right in front of me (in the left lane), but a moderate distance ahead, for safety. As the vehicle began to slowly come even with and overtake a semi-truck in the right lane, I watched in horror as the rear of the SUV suddenly got blown to the left. Keep in mind the torrential rain and the incredible wind. The SUV hydroplaned on the water-soaked road and seemed to purposely drive across the right lane, then across the paved shoulder, and then straight into the ditch --by then going backwards! (This is happening right in front of me!) As I passed the poor motorist, the car careened up the other side of the embankment, sideways, with muddy water and pieces of sod flying wildly into the air. But the car did not flip over, and it seemed the driver lucked out. It was too treacherous for me to see much else in my mirrors--my heart was pounding and I was gripping my steering wheel for dear life. A couple miles down the road was a highway weigh station, where I saw a State Trooper do a U-turn, presumably heading to assist the one-car spinout accident. Wow. Although the rain seemed to let up a little when I exited the interstate and headed toward Nolin Dam, the wind was still blowing hard. As I made my way down the 2-lane roads to reach Maple Springs (the 'back way'), there were no fewer than four times traffic came to a stop or serious slowdown due to giant trees that had fallen across the roadway. One tree was about three feet in diameter, and there were about 10 vehicles stopped in both directions. Luckily, however, a guy who had a chainsaw in his pickup truck had just finished cutting through the massive log, and several other men rolled the logs to the shoulder. I arrived at Maple to find that the electricity had gone out a couple hours prior. Ugh. Brian pointed out how a section of a very tall, dead tree right in front of the Maple Springs barn sliding door had crashed down and damaged the eave of the barn roof. As several of us stood around, there were massive blowing gusts that made so much noise in the teetering trees all around us, we had to keep a constant watch as twigs, leaves and sometimes small branches rained down on us (and parked cars). At that point, due to the danger of more trees falling onto cars parked in the little gravel parking area, Brian recommended that the vehicle owners more their cars to the front lawn, well away from any trees that might fall over. Suddenly, a massive 80-foot-tall tree between the rear of the Maple Springs barn and the 'bat house' uprooted and crashed to the ground, narrowly missing the rear of the barn. A little while later, Brian received a phone call that some Resto cavers were unable to reach Maple Springs due to fallen trees on the north Green River Ferry Road (toward the former 'Forks' convenience store). Two vehicles containing Brian, John Kirk, Dave and Dee Boerma and Gary set out down the Maple Springs Loop road and turned left at the st

Regretfully, due to multiple downed trees in both directions of the access road, March resto camp is canceled, also Mammoth cave itself is closed as of this moment and all day tomorrow. Resto Camp Protocol and Info Guide
First time resto cavers please read! Just a little over three days until what is no doubt going to be in the top 4 Mammoth Cave Resto events of 2023! We have some great tasks lined up to get the cave ready for its big event at the end of April. The weather looks like it¡¯s going to be good, and I can¡¯t wait to see all of my resto family both old (in resto years) and new. Speaking of new, at recent camps we have had many new and newly returning resto cavers. I for one remember how awkward it was to show up the first time and not know where to go or what the protocol is. To that end, it is my great pleasure to present to you the Resto Camp Protocol and Info Guide. This amazing 5-page manual to resto camp covers all the information that any new or returning resto caver could need. ¡°But Brian, where do I sleep?¡± Check the guide. ¡°Brian, what's the plan for dinner Saturday night?¡± It¡¯s in the guide? ¡°Brian, how are the chickens?¡± Not in the guide, but doing great. ¡°Brian, where do we meet Saturday morning, and at what time?¡± It¡¯s in the guide along with so much more! A huge thanks to resto¡¯s very own Grateful Gary for helping me put this together. It wouldn¡¯t have gotten done (or put online) if not for his help and guidance. Without further ado, the guide can be found at the following link, at restoremammoth.com, or attached to this email. Enjoy and see you all soon. https://www.restoremammoth.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Resto-Camp-Protocol-and-Info-Guide.pdf

El Mazatlan, Friday @ 5:30 PM 2
As most of you know for weekend camps, we usually head to El Mazatl¨¢n on Saturday night. Well guess what, the ferry is down so we are going on Friday. Instead of having to drive to Maple Springs after a long day of work and then having to head back to Cave City for dinner on Saturday, we are going to make it easier and head to El Maz on Friday. Anyone that is on their way to Maple, already in town, friends of the camp, or just wants to have some good Mexican food we will be there Friday starting at 5:30. Looking forward to seeing you all there. Brian

Regrets for this weekend :( 8
Hi Resto friends, I had some bad luck and will be unable to join you all for the upcoming Restoration weekend. Although I received the 3rd Covid booster shot (on Sept. 14), I have come down with the virus --for the first time throughout the pandemic. I spent last weekend audio sound-engineering at a large event in the ballroom of the Hilton/St. Louis that had 166 people from across the U.S. and several foreign countries in attendance. I took a self-test on Monday that indicated 'negative' for Covid. But then my health took a 180-degree turn for the worse overnight and (yesterday) I tested POSITIVE. :( I'll be quarrantining for the next five days, including this weekend. I wish you all a great time, hope you get a lot done and I'll see you at the Spring weekend! cheers, -Gary

Don¡¯t forget that signup starts this Saturday, October 1st at 12:01 EST. November is one of the best times to be at Mammoth and the beautiful Fall weather usually means plenty of time around the fire pit. Coach Cave Cleanup September 16-18 2
Putting out a call for volunteers to help the James Cavers, US Fish and Wildlife, and The Nature Conservancy finish up the haul out of all the debris that we have accumulated in Coach Cave. The following was sent to me by Charlie Bishop. If you are interested please reach out directly to Charlie or contact me for more information. US Fish & Wildlife and TNC are attempting to organize a trip September 16, 17 and 18 to remove the wood and debris from the Coach entrance room. To do it effectively and not overwork any one individual, at least 25 people are needed. In addition to James Cave Project cavers, some personnel from the Kentucky Bat Management Group, KY Fish & Wildlife, and U.S. Fish & Wildlife have volunteered to help, but more individuals are needed. People will stand on the entrance steps and pass cut-up sections of boards and bags of small pieces of wood up and out of the cave to be loaded into pickup trucks and taken to a dumpster. It may take two days to get all of the wood out. USF&W will pay for Friday night motel lodging for anyone who commits to work both Friday and Saturday. Lunch will be provided each day. Anyone coming for only Saturday gets lunch, but no lodging. If you can participate. please respond by September 6th. Brian

Kudos to Resto Directo Brian! 5
Kudos to Resto Camp Director Brian! I don't know if this was stated at the Awards Dinner (which I was unable to attend) but, on behalf of all Resto Camp participants, Brian should be recognized and thanked for all the time and effort he puts in as Director --and especially with how well the 2022 Field Camp went. Here's a list of what Brian did: - he planned and organized the week; - he networked with the Park (Liz, Dr. Rick) on making sure Maple Springs was reserved for us; - he discussed work projects with them; - he networked and discussed work with Charlie/Kat Bishop and the James Cavers for our work at Coach Cave; - he did the same with Rick Olson and the massive project we successfully completed at Coate's Cave; - he organized and maintained the participant list --which grew and grew-- as well as handled all the registration fees; - as the participant list expanded, he managed the growing list of food and the menu it would take to feed us; - he planned and executed the Awards and 'spiff' gifts we all received; - he and Katt arrived days early at Maple in order to make the site ready for us; - they (and others) made the big 'shopping trip' to purchase all the food, beverages and other supplies; - he and Katt woke up early every day to prepare breakfast for everyone; - they (and additional helpers, like Dee Boerma and others) helped cook, lay-out the food spread and put it all away after we'd eaten our fill; - Brian supervised all the work that was done and (along with Ken) did a great job in demolishing the wood wall at Coate's and rigging the water tank for removal; - he even found time (along with John and Ken) to diagnose, order a new motor and repair the kitchen ceiling exhaust fan. Other recognitions: - Jonathan and Teresa for cooking a delicious dinner - Dave Boerma for making a fire every night - Ken for cleaning the bunkhouse gutters - Other 'unsung heroes' for doing tasks and other jobs that cement us as a family and tribe! But mainly, we owe you our thanks and gratitude, Brian. With your always-cheerful demeanor and positive outlook on things, you're an outstanding Resto Director. We thank you!

Important and Exciting Weeklong Resto Announcements 2
Wow, it¡¯s getting close! I don¡¯t know about you but I¡¯m getting excited. There are a couple of things I want to make sure everyone is aware of prior to camp. First and most important, the ferry schedule. On the plus side, the ferry is running. On the downside, its current hours are Mon-Fri 6 am to 6 pm and Sat & Sun 8 am to 6 pm. Here¡¯s what that means to us. For Dinner Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday if you are staying offsite on the non-Maple side of the river, you will be driving around to get back. This unfortunately includes the Friday Night Award Banquet. Wednesday night's pizza party will still be at the enclosed pavilion on the south side of the river followed by our Wednesday Night cave trip. This is great news for those staying offsite on that side of the river, for the rest of us, we will be driving around. Speaking of Wednesday¡¯s Pizza Party, how about some exciting news? Our after-hours cave trip will be a night at Huckleberry Knob hosted by the incredible Missy Shields and John Sies. As I understand it, we will have an opportunity to tour Onyx Cave and another nearby cave. I can¡¯t wait!! Of course, it can¡¯t all be Pizza parties (we wouldn¡¯t fit in the caves), our primary objective for the week is to give back to the park and nearby caves through volunteering our labor. To that end, I am putting out a couple of calls to action. First, if you are comfortable with vertical caving, please bring your gear. Second, if you would be interested in some potential wet caving (walking in cave rivers, possible short swimming) then don¡¯t forget your wet suit and pack an extra towel. No guarantee that we will have vertical caving and or wet caving but just in case :) Also don¡¯t forget, if you haven¡¯t yet, to fill out and bring the waiver for our work with the James Cavers (link below) and attached. Right, you¡¯ve been resto¡¯ing all week, it¡¯s time for some Saturday educational trips. ¡°Great, Brian, but where will we be going?¡± you ask. Well, as with many things in life, there are no guarantees. That said, we are working on lining up a shorter trip to ¡°Short Cave¡± (see what I did there)! Our longer trip we are looking at heading to Mystic River! Holy cow, where to go?! I am looking forward to seeing you all at the Howdy Party Sunday, July 31st. It¡¯s going to be a great week. https://www.restoremammoth.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/TNC-Liability-Release-Restoration.pdf Brian

Weeklong Resto Camp Announcement 2
Hello Resto Cavers, this is a special announcement for those who will be attending this year's weeklong camp. As you know we are very happy to be once again working with the James Cavers in the continuing restoration of Coach and James Cave. To make things easier I am attaching and making available the liability waiver that needs to be filled out and provided to Charlie on Sunday evening at the welcome party. We will also have paper copies available on Sunday just in case you are not able to do it in advance. I would also like to remind everyone that White Nose procedures are still very much in play in James and Coach Cave. What this means is that anyone working with us Monday and Tuesday in Coach needs to make sure that the gear you use Monday has been decontaminated or has not been used in another cave. The bats appreciate your consideration. In other camp news, I¡¯m getting excited as things are coming together. Not only does it appear that we will have 6 or so new to camp participants, but it also looks like the camp's very own local favorites Missy and John may be able to provide a tour of Onyx for our Wednesday night cave trip (they are the best!). I can¡¯t wait! Speaking of cave trips, I¡¯d like to hear ideas from all of you for Saturday. What are your bucket list trips at Mammoth, let me know in the comments! Don¡¯t forget the Welcome Party Sunday night where I will once again bring a taste of Chicago in the way of Portillo's famous Beef, Sausage, and Lemon Cake. https://www.restoremammoth.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/TNC-Liability-Release-Restoration.pdf Thanks, Brian

Weeklong News 3
Hello Resto Buddies! The applications are rolling in, but don¡¯t worry there is still plenty of time to sign up if you haven¡¯t yet. It¡¯s shaping up to be a great camp! In addition to all the fun with the James Cavers and at Mammoth Cave, I am very pleased to announce that we are going to spend one of the days doing a very special cave clean-up at the property of our very own Rick Olsen! As always there will be lint and I¡¯m sure plenty of rock for everyone! If you have any questions or concerns please contact me directly. Can¡¯t wait to see everyone in a few short weeks! Brian

August Camp Application
Friends, Resto Cavers, the time is upon us, the time you have all been waiting for, the time of the 2022 August Camp application! Mark your calendar, put in your vacation request, and get ready to spend a week at Mammoth Cave doing what we love with the people we love to do it with. Onward to August camp! And now the slight bummer part of this announcement. Due to the rising costs of, well just about everything, I have made the decision to raise the cost of August Camp from $80 to $90. Hopefully everyone understands and this doesn¡¯t sway anyone¡¯s decision one way or the other. The application is now available at restoremammoth.com and on this email. Once again you can submit electronically and send funds electronically to (for those that are check adverse). We will be making our triumphant return to Maple Springs for August Camp. Love you all and see you in August, it¡¯s gonna be great!

Important May Resto Camp Announcement 2
Hey Hey Resto Cavers, less than a week away from May Camp. Where¡¯s the time go? On Friday I received an update to the parks COVID mandate. As of Friday April 29th, the park is no longer requiring COVID attestation for volunteers. This means that you will not be required to provide the attestation form or present a negative test. Looks like we may have that one behind us. Please let me know if you have any questions. Now the fun stuff, what are we doing? On Saturday our primary objective will be to finish removing the concrete from the subsidence pit at the Historic entrance. This will require, jackhammering, hammer drilling, sledgehammering, and hopefully other hammer-related activities. We will also have a small group working on removing lint from the walls and of course, we have Bandit Hall rock if we get bored. Sunday should prove to be fun. I have been informed that there was a small rock fall near the elevator that needs to be cleaned up. Sounds easy you say. Well, what if I said the elevator wasn¡¯t working? That¡¯s right, we will be cleaning up the rock at the elevator by way of the Carmichael entrance. I can¡¯t wait! Looking forward to seeing you all! Brian

Photos from Mar 2022 weekend 2
Selected photos (scaled-down, reduced size) from the March Resto weekend can be found at the following Dropbox link: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/7jvzsnf7gl62zvt/AAD4SJo3vpIUs1BrxsR2Rk20a?dl=0 My apologies, but several pics that were shot at the end of Sunday were completely out-of-focus, due to 'photographer error' (--I inadvertently turned off the 'Auto Focus' switch on the lens... oops) Our 'group photo' (the last one) is an example. Oh well... we'll try it again at the May weekend. Don't forget that sign-up begins a couple days from now: on Fri. Apr. 1, at 12:01am (Eastern), or Thur. Mar. 31 at 11:01pm (An 'Eventbrite' invitation will be sent to all.)

IMPORTANT MARCH CAMP UPDATE 2
Hello Mammoth Cave Friends and Family. First, let me apologize for the length of this message. There are some changes for the March camp, and I want to try and explain this as clearly as possible. As most of you are aware as volunteers with the park we are required to follow all applicable guidance presented to us from the NPS. As such, for the March camp, here is a simplified version of what will happen (full details of why will be at the bottom of this message). Event Link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/march-2022-mammoth-cave-restoration-camp-registration-258992432337 To attend the March Restoration camp each volunteer will be required to either show a completed Certification of Vaccination (form provided by the NPS) or present a negative COVID-19 test result from within the 3 days immediately prior to the date of entry. As I understand it the final form will not be available from the park until February 5th, as soon as it is available to me I will make it available to all people who have signed up through the Eventbrite page for the March Camp. I will also have copies of the form with me at camp for those who are vaccinated but were not aware or were not able to fill the form out before camp. I will need to see the completed and signed form at our Saturday morning kick-off. I will not however be keeping the form. I will just be putting a checkbox next to your name to let the park know that the form has been completed. Once I see your form and have checked the box unless the form changes or the guidance is different you will not need to present the form again for future camps. If you are unable or would not like to complete the form you will need to present a negative COVID-19 test result from within the 3 days immediately prior to the date of entry. This will need to be presented to me at the Saturday kick-off meeting so I can check that you are meeting the requirements of the park. Any participant who is unable to show either a completed Certification of Vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test result from within the 3 days immediately prior to the date of entry take a rapid test at the Saturday kick-off meeting. A negative result from a rapid test the morning of the start of camp will meet the requirements of the park. I plan on having a limited number of tests available for people who are not aware of the requirements. Keep in mind that I am doing this to help the camp run smoothly, if I run out of tests and a participant is unable to comply with the above-stated guidance they will not be allowed to participate in camp activities. If you have any questions regarding this please reach out to me directly. As always I want to keep the comments here positive and focused on the enjoyment of the resto camp keeping in mind the mutual respect we have for all resto camp friends and family. Requirements or not I can¡¯t wait to get back to Mammoth and am looking forward to seeing all who can attend. Below is the guidance provided to volunteers from the NPS. ** OFFICIAL GUIDANCE BELOW The Department of the Interior¡¯s COVID-19 mitigation policy bulletin regarding access to federally controlled buildings for business visitors has been determined by DOI to apply to volunteers. This guidance aims to help all business visitors, including volunteers, stay safe in our national parks. Please read the below FAQs to familiarize yourself with this change. Volunteers are an important part of the National Park Service and we are grateful for your continued service. 1. What must NPS volunteers do? All volunteers accessing NPS buildings must: Complete and present a Certification of Vaccination form (OMB Control No. 3206-0277). If they have NOT attested to being fully vaccinated, they must also possess and present a negative COVID-19 test result from within the 3 days immediately prior to the date of entry; and Maintain completed form (and test result, if necessary) on their person for the duration of their visit and present it to the volunteer manager or supervisor, as needed; and Comply with all public health protocol
