March Resto Camp Update

开云体育

Hey everybody, we are on the home stretch. Less than a week away from the first Resto Camp of 2024. Just a quick reminder that we will be staying at Maple Springs. The ferry is currently operating with the “new” hours of 6:00 am to 6:00 pm, Monday to Friday. 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, Saturday and Sunday.

?

This means hanging out on the south side of the river at night comes with a drive. As such I am suggesting a potluck dinner at Maple Spring for Saturday night for all that can make it. Bring a dish to share and enjoy the camaraderie!

?

Can’t wait to see you all this weekend.

?

Brian

Currently at pit 055 at Rogdon Hollow keeping John Kirk safe. So far the plan is just to return to El Ghor and keep moving transformer parts or work on George’s path. It’s gonna be great catching up with everybody.

As most of you are aware the tradition for a weekend camp is to visit El Mazatlán in Cave City for dinner on Saturday night. As we are staying at Hamilton Valley, have 31 attendees signed up, many newcomers, and are expecting several “old” timers to be in attendance, I would propose a Saturday night potluck dinner at Hamilton Valley. Knowing those attending I’m sure there will be plenty of food to go around so think about joining us Saturday night at Hamilton Valley at 6:00 PM. I feel this will be a great way to meet new people and reconnect with those we haven’t seen in a bit. I can’t wait to see you all there.

Bat article in today's Chicago Tribune

Hey cavers,

In this morning's Chicago Tribune there's an article about a map of rabid bats in Cook County (Chicago).

A screenshot of the article is attached (and it's pasted below), and the map itself can be found at shorturl.at/ijkpY

It's not much, but good to see that 'bats' made Page 4 in the Trib!

Halloween-themed map tracks county’s rabid bats

Nov. 1, 2023
by Alysa Guffey
Chicago Tribune

This Halloween, local health officials released a digital map of where bats have tested positive for rabies so residents can be more informed of the spooky animals flying in the night sky.

On Tuesday, the Cook County Department of Animal and Rabies Control (ARC) released the interactive map, available at shorturl.at/ijkpY, to raise awareness about rabies prevention and encourage pet owners to vaccinate dogs and cats against the disease.

Nine bats have tested positive for rabies in Cook County so far in 2023, according to the map.

The nine positive tests occurred between May 11 and Sept. 30. Residents can compare the number and location of identified bats with rabies from data as far back as 2018.

A significant number of the identified rapid bats were found inside homes, according to ARC Administrator Mamadou Diakhate, meaning that pets who primarily stay indoors can still be exposed to rabies.

“Rabies is a completely preventable disease and is always fatal to unvaccinated pets,” said Diakhate in a news release.

Rabies left untreated is also “almost always fatal to humans,” Diakhate reminded Cook County residents. The disease is transmitted through saliva and spreads when an infected animal scratches or bites another.

While rapid bats can pose danger to humans and other animals, bats play a vital role in the county’s ecosystem, said Chris Anchor, senior wildlife biologist for the Forest Preserves of Cook County, in a news release. A half-ounce brown bat can eat half its body weight in insects each night.

“Bats are amazing flying mammals that act as important biomonitors, helping to indicate the health of our environment,” Anchor said.

For those returning to camp after a short break, it will be like you never even left :) I will also put it out there for those that have wetsuits we will most likely have a team heading to the river (water level dependent). In addition to hauling and wetsuit teams we will also most likely start a project which is something I have wanted to do for years and years. I’m not going to share it here so either find out about it at camp or wait until after camp updates.

Most importantly, we will now be staying at Hamilton Valley. The signup stated Maple Springs but due to the ferry and booking we will be at our second home, Hamilton Valley. If you have any questions about this change, please feel free to reach out to me.

I can’t wait to see and catch up with everyone.
