Editing after Defining Names in Excel
开云体育I’m running Office 2016 with JAWS 2020 and when I’m in Excel, I use the Control F3 command to define my names of regions. JAWS does a very good job of reading my column and row headers up until I edit a cell. The moment I edit a cell JAWS stops reading me the column and row headers. I have to alt tab out of Excel and then alt tab back into it to get it to read me this information and it’s getting annoying having to alt tab in and out every time I edit a cell. I’ve gone into JAWS Quick Settings and turned the define names override off but I’m not wsure what I’m missing. ? Re: Turning Off Office Clipboard
Since it was asked on two groups simultaneously, I'll do almost a copy and paste of my response from the other place I answered it.
? ? ? ? ? ? There is no real way to describe this other than visually, as that tiny arrow that points downward and to the right is part and parcel of most control groupings in a ribbon.? In the case of the Clipboard Grouping, the actual shortcut you want to use is ALT+H, FO? (Home Ribbon, Office Clipboard - See all the items you've copied to the clipboard).? You can think of that downward right pointing arrow at the end of each control grouping as being it's equivalent of an advanced pop-out menu.? You will land on it if you tab through any given control grouping and it will always be the thing you land on immediately prior to entering whatever the next grouping happens to be. ? ? ? ? ? ? ?In the case of the Clipboard grouping, that is just before you pass into the Font grouping.? For the Font grouping it's just before you pass into the Paragraph grouping.? In the Paragraph Grouping it's just before you pass into the Styles grouping.? In the styles grouping it's just before you enter into the Editing grouping.? The Editing grouping actually doesn't have one of these.?? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?Not every grouping has one of these, and which groupings do varies by program.? For instance, in Excel the Clipboard, Font, Alignment, and Number groupings all have one of these "pop-out" controls, but the rest don't.? It seems to be a function of whether there are more options than can be shown at one time in the ribbon (or you could also think of it as whether there are advanced options not often used related to that grouping). ? ? ? ? ? ? ?Because I can see, when I was navigating the ribbon and landed on that control in the Clipboard Grouping I could hear NVDA announce it as, "Office Clipboard - See all the items you've copied to the clipboard; ALT+H,FO."? The corresponding control in the Font Grouping is reached by ALT+H,FN, and is announced as, "Font, customize your text using advanced font and character options (plus a lot more stuff); ALT+H,FN."? What the screen reader is reading is the pop-up text that shows to a sighted user if they hover over that control and that shows up in a little mouse "hover over window."? That hover-over window does not appear when you land on the control via tabbing or arrowing, but if you linger for a moment the exact text that I see if I hover over is what the screen reader reads. ? ? ? ? ? ? ?The only way I can tell you to identify these controls is to use CTRL+Left or Right arrow to move between control groupings, then SHIFT+TAB to jump back to the last control within the last control grouping.? It becomes obvious pretty quickly, just based on the amount of verbiage involved, whether the thing you've landed on is one of these pop-out controls for a grouping or one of the normal controls within that grouping.? There is no real "shorthand name" for these things, and since the text is unique to each one, that's why the downward right pointing arrow is used in those instructions. ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Give the above a try and see what you find. |

Re: unique issue
If you want to find out whether a group exists on Groups.io for some specific thing:
1. Open your web browser and put groups.io in as the web address then navigate to that page. 2. On the Groups.io main page, using either screen reader search or regular browser search look for "find a group."? You'll land on the find a group control, which you should activate. 3. The Groups.io "Find a group" page opens and the only edit box on the page is for entering the search term(s) for the groups you hope to find.? I would try JFW first, since I know that both of the JAWS for Windows end user groups use this in their names. Then activate the search button or just hit enter. 4. You will be presented with the group(s) that match your search terms.? Each group returned by that search is a web page header, so you can use quick navigation with the H shortcut to jump between them.? When you open the home page for any group all it's common E-mail addresses are listed under the Group Email Addresses on that page. That's how you find a group on Groups.io independently. Now, on to handing you the addresses for the two largest JAWS user groups, the first of which is far larger and more active than the second: JAWS for Windows Support List

On Behalf Of David Goldfield ? I'd be interested in verifying whether this consistently occurs with JAWS 2019 and Word 2013. As I don't have either of those two versions available I'm unable, though not unwilling, to confirm this behavior. It's remotely possible that reinstalling JAWS could fix this but this would likely erase any custom settings your student may have created. I'd agree that a call to FS wouldn't hurt. Also, as this is as much of a JAWS issue as it is an Office issue have you considered going to the JFW list to see if others using this combination have the same experiences? ? ? Re: unique issue
开云体育Hi, again. Marsha, I'm also wondering if you've tried temporarily setting JAWS to what is called alternate user directory mode. This is used for diagnostic purposes and it essentially uses JAWS with default settings. To toggle in or out of this mode press the layered keystroke insert-space, followed by the letter Z. You should hear JAWS verify that you're in this mode using the Eloquence voice with the default speech settings although sometimes other voices with unexpected speech settings are used. If this happens just switch to the voice and speech settings that are preferable. However, these settings aren't going to be saved but this mode can be temporarily used to see if JAWS is still generating that error message when you exit the Find pane. If it behaves normally then something may have gotten corrupted in your student's profile and it may then be necessary to remove the student's Word settings to start over. This, of course, does not remove the actual settings in the Word application itself. In addition, if your student likes using the JAWS find command
you can remind the student that pressing insert-f3 finds and moves
to the next occurrence of the word that was being searched for and
shift-insert-f3 moves to the previous instance. Navigation quick
keys needs to be enabled with insert-z in order for these search
capabilities to work. I personally prefer hotkeys which are easier
to press and if this is the case for your student you can use the
JAWS Keyboard Manager to add other keys for these functions.
Personally, I prefer ctrl-F for Find, f3 for Find Next and
shift-f3 for Find Previous but Word does use the function keys for
its own functions so not all users will like my choices. As an
alternative you could use ctrl-F for JAWS Find, shift-ctrl-F for
Find next and alt-shift-f for Find Previous.

Re: unique issue
I'd be leaning toward something wrong with her version of Jaws. I've gotten similar misleading messages before and FS support had me download the latest version of jaws to see if that would correct the problem. Kind of like hitting a fly with a hammer but sometimes it works. FS does have a decent collection of bugs and fixes, depending on who you talk to there. It would be worth a call.
