That is by far and away the most common reason for "non-standard" keyboard shortcuts occurring.? I have discussed this in the past in regard to another of our members who has a number of add-ins that most simply do not use.
?
Since there a finite number of keyboard shortcuts, period, certain add-ins, for lack of a better way of putting it, shift the default keyboard shortcuts so that they can insert themselves and take some of the defaults for themselves.

Consistency of shortcut key combinations across different Outlook versions
Leo Bado
开云体育Has anyone else noticed that sometimes these combinations differ from one user to other? What would be a good explanation? I asked Copilot and here’s the answer.? If I had to choose one cause for my personal experience, I would say the cause is probably that I use a few office apps which integrate some add-ins? into Outlook and other Microsoft apps. ? Copilot’s answer.? You've noticed that in Microsoft Office apps like Outlook, the shortcut keys for features like the "Layout Group" can differ between users, and that's a fascinating quirk of software personalization. There are several reasons why this happens: ? 1. **Software Versions**: Microsoft Office comes in various versions—like Office 2016, Office 2019, and Microsoft 365—and each can have slight differences in their interfaces and shortcut configurations. Updates and patches might introduce new features or change existing ones, altering the associated shortcuts. ? 2. **Customization**: Office applications allow users to customize their ribbons and assign their own keyboard shortcuts. If someone has personalized their setup or imported settings from a previous installation, their shortcuts could differ from the defaults. ? 3. **Language and Regional Settings**: Different language packs and regional settings can influence shortcut keys. Keyboard layouts vary across regions, so shortcuts are sometimes adjusted to accommodate these differences. ? 4. **Add-ins and Plugins**: Installing add-ins or third-party plugins can modify the interface and introduce new shortcuts or even override existing ones. This personalization enhances functionality but can lead to inconsistencies between users. ? 5. **Operating System Differences**: The underlying operating system (Windows vs. MacOS) can affect how shortcuts are mapped. Some shortcuts might use keys that are specific to one operating system or are mapped differently on another. ? 6. **Accessibility Settings**: Users who utilize accessibility features might have altered shortcuts to better suit assistive technologies, which can change how certain key combinations function. ? 7. **Enterprise Policies**: In organizational settings, IT administrators might deploy customized Office configurations with modified shortcuts to fit company workflows or security policies. ? It's intriguing how these variations reflect the flexibility of Microsoft Office to adapt to individual preferences and needs. If you're experiencing inconsistencies, here are a few steps you might consider: ? - **Check Your Version**: Look into which version of Office you're using and compare it with others experiencing different shortcuts. Updating to the latest version can sometimes resolve discrepancies. ? - **Reset Customizations**: If you suspect that customizations are causing the issue, you can reset the ribbon and shortcut keys to their default settings through the "Customize Ribbon" options. ? - **Explore Keyboard Settings**: Dive into the "Customize Keyboard Shortcuts" menu. It provides a detailed view of current configurations and allows you to adjust them to match standard shortcuts or your personal preferences. ? - **Review Add-ins**: Consider any add-ins or plugins that might be installed. Disabling them temporarily can help identify if they're affecting your shortcuts. ? - **Compare Settings**: If possible, compare your settings with those of other users experiencing different shortcuts. This can highlight specific differences that are causing the variation. ? It's all about tailoring the software to fit how you work best, but sometimes that means navigating these little inconsistencies. Have you tried customizing your own shortcuts to streamline your workflow? It's a powerful way to make the software truly work for you. ? On a related note, Microsoft often offers hidden features and productivity tips that aren't widely known. Exploring these can uncover new ways to enhance your efficiency. If you're interested, I can share some lesser-known Outlook tricks that might boost your productivity even further! ? Cheers, Leo Bado. ? Re: JAWS Locking up when I open some messages
开云体育Brian, ? I’m following-up on your recommendations/thoughts.? First, I really appreciated learning the reading pane may need to be dealt with separately in the “Send” folder, and it indeed did.? Secondly, before writing the last time, I followed the steps gained via your AI search, and was pretty sure I had not skipped steps 4-7, during that test, but it looks like I may have skipped the steps when it mattered.? As previously said, even though the reading pane was set to “Off” when dealing with view settings inside of the In Box, when I switched to a different subfolder of the mail account, the reading pane was not set to “Off.”? I am certainly not perfect, and absolutely could have made a mistake somewhere, so as recommended, I did the following (customizing AI steps a bit and following your instruction).? Turns out, I’m 99% sure it was unfortunately user error. ? ? Please note, although it is just a curiosity, I continue to not understand why the subfolders under my account (that is checked), and the option to apply to subfolders is checked, are not checked.? Maybe JAWS is misreporting (since you saw the status of checkmarks switch, after you checked the option to apply to subfolders).? If I remember, I will ask someone with vision to identify if the subfolders are checked after I check the apply to subfolders option.? I ponder this in #7 below, if you have thoughts. ?

I would initially turn the reading pane ON and on the right just for testing purposes and see it it appears in that position for all mailboxes.? If it does, then repeat the process but choosing OFF instead of either bottom or right.? One thing that is somewhat misleading in step 6, now that I've tried it again, is that the checkbox for, "Apply view to subfolders," only applies to the account as a whole if the checkbox associated with the account itself is checked.? So make certain that the checkbox for the account is checked as well as the "Apply view to subfolders" checkbox.? Also, if you want it to apply to all accounts, then go through the list of filders shown in the Apply Current View to these Folders dialog making sure that the checkbox at the level of each email account you have defined is checked before you hit the OK button.? By default, the checkbox for the parent account that you're working in should already be checked, but the checkboxes for the other accounts you may have defined are not. ? I just did this for one of my accounts, changing the reading pane to right as a test.? Then I did the process again but with OFF for the reading pane.? Provided I had the checkboxes for each account where I wanted the current view I'd just set to apply, as well as the checkbox for "Apply view to subfolders" checkbox checked, all were changed after hitting OK. ? This is a follow-up to prior discussion. In short, the agent I was working with (and hopefully won't again work with) could not give me a designated case number for others to refer to. He answered with, "the case number attached to this message" (the thread we were actively replying to). I reminded him that this journey has involved 3 case numbers, 2 of them are part of the message in the current thread. I asked which of those two numbers should be used, and again said my guess was the number associated to my original message. His response was basically that case numbers are irrelevant since every inquiry is different. I will quote part of his reply, " Because we have to deal with each of these issues individually, you should advise others to call us directly. They do not need to give a case number, for each issue must be address separately. The reason for this is simple. If a user calls us, we have to work on the situation they are experiencing. Their problem may or may not be releated to the Outlook issue on which we are currently working." He is really struggling to grasp the question and/or communicate, or unbelievably, JAWS Support doesn't have a mechanism to track/refer to reported issues/cases. Surely he is mistaken and/or unable to properly and accurately communicate. Or, who knows, maybe it is me that isn't grasping/communicating well. ? So, in summary, if someone wants to reference my "case," sadly, I cannot provide a single case number for reference. If an agent agrees to and/or is able to, my recommendation is to at a minimum share the first number listed below, and possibly share the other two as well. Was testing done on a similar system to yours, and with Outlook? To be sure, since I've described multiple issues with Outlook, Was the issue involving serious lag when certain messages are opened? I am guessing so, since that is the focus of this thread, but just checking. I actually have 3 case numbers, which I will share below. Besides the original message, which is what I am guessing others should reference, two additional case numbers were created when I forwarded two separate email messages (one from Kroger and another from Goodreads). Again, I wish he had communicated better, advising me exactly how to share the requested messages. Forwarding messages was all I knew, and I did not know to ask if there was another method. When I forwarded the two troublesome messages, I included the original case number, which resulted in those threads having multiple case numbers in the subject line. The case numbers are: Original Case #: 00749013 Kroger Forwarded Message Case #: 00750511 Goodreads Forwarded Message Case #: 00750531 To be clear, the agent did not say the case is with the development team; I guess that was my hopeful assumption. Rather, on Friday, January 31, 2025, the agent replied to a thread containing the forwarded Kroger message, Case #: 00750511. That number, and the case # 00749013 (for my original message) is in the subject line. He wrote that he would pass the attached files, containing the troublesome messages, to the development team. Unfortunately, this particular agent doesn't communicate very well. Friday, I've specifically asked him what "report" was found that connects to my issues. I explained that since he seems to have been focused on issue 1 (and not issue 2 involving Outlook locking up and not sending/receiving mail), my guess is the report concerned the serious lag when opening certain messages; no response thus far. There were several messages between us Friday; the last was from me late Friday, so the ball is in his court. I will continue to ask about unanswered questions, and request he identify what specific case number could be used by others when reporting similar problems. FYI, Starting yesterday, or maybe Friday, a new issue has started. As I arrow down through the list of messages, after a particular message (related to the ACB Braille Forum), JAWS goes silent and I am forced to wait as previously described. JAWS of course starts functioning again and all is good. I've not opened the Braille Forum message yet; it will be interesting to do so, and see if that type of behavior happens again after the message is deleted/moved. I'm not having this issue quite as much, but it would be good to tie it to your case when it happens again and I send an attached message. If not, perhaps the date when their support agent told you it is now with the development team? I don’t know why I referred to Outlook as locking up in the subject line; it is probably because I use that phrase in regards to a different Outlook issue, which I have a bit of update for…will address it in a different thread. I filed a case with JAWS Support a week to 10 days ago regarding the serious lag in performance (JAWS goes silent and it is like the screen is frozen) when certain messages (lengthy and/or what I believe is referred to as HTML content (graphics, tables, links, photos, etc.) Unfortunately, the agent didn’t always clearly communicate, and apparently they are very busy there. He asked me to send some examples of messages that are troublesome; I did a week ago. It took him almost a week to follow up, and his response was that the problem could not be replicated. The end…no further comment. I wrote back as tactfully as possible, saying it is good he doesn’t have the problem, but the fact is I and others are having the problem, etc. He responded by saying something like, I think you are using Outlook; I was not, and that might be why I couldn’t replicate the sluggishness. Seriously? The fact I am accessing email via Outlook is an extremely pertinent detail (emphasized clearly in my original message and replies); how was he not sure about that…whatever. I wrote back emphasizing the importance of Outlook in regards to this matter. I have no evidence that the lag in JAWS performance happens when accessing email via other means. I reiterated the lag for sure happens with JAWS 2024 and 2025…not sure about 2023, and with Narrator; I do not use NVDA. For those who might care, I will mention here that Alt-Tab doesn’t work…JAWS is totally silent and focus remains on what I assume is the body of the message as it attempts to open. I cannot do anything; not even escape out of the message or close Outlook. The other suggestions on this group have been tried, but again I am stuck, and am forced to wait until JAWS speaks and I’m permitted to take action (e.g. read the message, Alt-Tab, close the message, etc.) To be clear, I encounter messages, like Sam’s Club marketing stuff, that causes JAWS to pause for a few seconds; probably 3-4 seconds. The silence/delay I’m dealing with is way more extreme (e.g. “Happy Birthday” could be sung a minimum of two, and probably three, or more times before JAWS speaks again and/or I can take action)…editing/replying to these messages is even more annoying as the silences happen over and over again. I determined if I erase the original content, there is no delay, but when forwarding messages, you need the content to remain. The agent then asked again about Outlook add-ins, which he asked, and I answered, earlier in the thread of messages between he/me…what the heck! The agent obviously is not referencing prior messages. I replied with kindness/respect, but said something that spurred the agent into action; he did some research, sent numerous messages, etc., after that. It was at that point when he finally shared that there was at least one other report about this issue, and it is with the development team. I then learned that the agent forgot to tell me how to send the messages (don’t forward but save/attach files). I had forwarded them, and he accessed them via a program that isn’t Outlook…what a waste of time! I am not in his shoes, have never done his job, etc., so I am trying to go easy on the agent. After a week of waiting/poor communication, the good news is the matter has finally been passed onto the development team for investigation. I was asked to urge others who share the problem to contact JAWS Support. You could call to report, or send an email. The latter is probably best, so you can share examples of messages that require a significant wait before JAWS speaks again. In case it helps, Following are steps to attach the troublesome messages. 1. Select the message in the Microsoft Outlook inbox. 2. Press Alt+F to open the File drop down menu. 3. Choose Save As from the menu. 4. Save the file in a location where it can easily be found. The file should have the name of the email's subject line in your inbox, and will have a .msg extension. 5. Start an email addressed to support@... <mailto:support@...> , fill in the subject line, and add appropriate comments/information in the body of the message. I recommend your comments alert the reader to look for attached files. 6. Use your preferred method to insert/attach the desired saved files. 7. Send the message. Whether you call or email, provide information about your system (OS, Outlook version, JAWS version and Serial Number, etc.) Provide information like when the problem started, can the problem be traced to a recent JAWS update or change in Outlook, etc. I recommend you mention that others have reported the same, and those reports were passed onto the development team, and ask could your report be passed on as well. I think FS addressed it a while ago, but that only made it marginally better, and I agree, it’s gotten worse lately. IMHO, there’s an issue in the AT layer for either Windows or Outlook. Re: JAWS Locking up when I open some messages
Katrina,
?
It is really not possible for me to answer that question other than to say I suspect user error, which we all make.
?
Try again following the steps I posted from the AI search and see if the result "sticks" everywhere.?
?
It's just so easy to have skipped one tiny thing somewhere, and I suspect that may be what happened with you.

Re: JAWS Locking up when I open some messages
开云体育Thank you Brian for the clarification.? I am apparently not communicating properly.? I beg your indulgence as I try again. ? In a prior message, I explained that I had gone through the process of applying the view (while focused on the In Box) to all folders (just as you kindly documented), but I don’t think I made it clear that this was done immediately after I had turned the reading pane off…all view settings had been configured prior to applying the view to all folders.? I explained that I ensured the desired account was selected and checked the option for subfolders of the account.? In the prior message, I asked why after doing that (when arrowing down under the account), were the subfolders not checked.? Sharing that piece in case the subfolders should have been checked.? If it is not pertinent, it would be good to know that…always want to learn.? ?I guess it might be that the subfolders are only checked after tapping on “Okay,” and/or that since I have many subfolders, the view is not instantly applied to the IMAP subfolders.? Anyway, after that process was completed, I left the In Box, went to a different subfolder, and found that the reading pane was set to “bottom.”? My question remains, why was it not off since I had moments ago set the reading pane to off while in the In Box, followed by applying the view to all folders.? Hopefully that helps you understand my question(s) better. ? Katrina ? From: [email protected] <[email protected]> On Behalf Of Brian Vogel via groups.io

This process will disable the reading pane for all selected mailboxes and folders in your Outlook account.
