Book on Siberia/Wanda
3
Hi, my aunt in Poland was telling about how her father (my grandfather) was sent to Siberia and because there were a rich noble family and had connections they forged a document and he was released at an old age after spending 5 years in Siberia was put on a train back home to Kobryn and someone recognized him, he was so skinny with fleas under his arm pits, just awful he arrived on December 22nd and 2 days later died on December 24th, on his birthday! coincidentally December 24th is my birthday also, my aunt could not believe the coincidence my mother had to confirm it.I can ask her to write me everything she remembered her father Tomasz Adam Dabrowski told her, he also sent letters from Siberia, I will scan and email it to you for the book. Good luck Nadia.

Last night ITV2 showed the SS in Britain, about the 14th SS "Galizien" division I'm still amazed that in spite of all the evidence presented the author M. Melnyk and the "others" are still denying and disputing the facts. There were German documents that showed the divisions whereabouts and they are adamant that those documents are wrong. I suggest that if others can watch it they do as it shows the Ukrainian Nationalist's mentality to insist that they are innocent of the crimes, they've even managed to persuade their children that they were the victims I have posed this question to M. Melnyk, If you state that you're Ukrainians fighting for a free Ukraine and despise the Poles and all that they stand for. Also you have never acknowledged the territory being Polish, why then upon your surrender to the British did you all pass yourselves as Polish citizens. I'm awaiting his reply. * Fiserv CBS Division - Banking Technology for the Future. ** This e-mail should be considered confidential between Fiserv and the addressee organisation(s), and may be covered by legal, professional or other privilege (or other similar rules or laws). Bortkiewicze

I didn't save the postings, but I think you were trying to find some info on Bortkiewicze a couple weeks ago? I was looking up some villages in Slownik Geograficzny yesterday. Hope this helps you: Bortkiewicze 1.) ws~ Wl~os~c., pow. oszmianski, 1 okr. pol., gm. Polany (15 w.), nalez~y do do~br. skarb. Daukszynszki. Nabyta w 1787 r. przez Ignacego Waz~yn~skiego od Bortkiewiczo~w, wyszl~a z domu Waz~yn~skich wskutek eksdywizyi okol~o r. 1830. 2.) B., ws~, pow. dz~win~ski (dyneburski), par. Krasl~aw. So there were 2 villages by the name Bortkiewicze, the first one listed being in Oszmiany powiat (district), 15 wiorsts from Polany. ShtetlSeeker finds 3 Polany's in Belarus. One is due north of Asmjany, about halfway to Hrodzi, and now known as Paljany. Hope this helps, Barbara Proko

Social Security Administration
2
I was wondering if anyone could help me with an electronic address for the Social Security Administration in Baltimore, Maryland. The reason I ask is that i'm in Australia and I found an entry of a Wasyl Sycz who died in the USA in May 1979. This name is the same as that of my Grandfathers and I'd thought it would be worth a try to see if he was in fact my GF. Thanks Denis

From Linder Stachnik in England

Dear Colleagues, Can someone put me right? I am a little confused about the place that my father was imprisoned during the war. According to his Polish Army Records, 'he was deported to within the former USSR in 1940 [exact date and place unknown]'. Family stories tell of 'Siberia Salt Mines', but as he came from Lwow and was captured there, I begin to wonder! WERE there any Salt Mines in Siberia? There was some Salt Mines near Krakow, I'm told. Could he have been captured at Lwow, sent to a Krakow Mine/Labour camp, then be released to join the Polish Army being organised at that time? Family stories just don't add up, so I'm trying to take out 'supposition' and re-think the whole thing. Appreciate any guidance from you all. Thanks Linder

Possible new information sourse

Hello fellow researchers, I subscribe to Scoop, a online magazine produced by Lonely Planet, the following article published by them looks to be very useful to those historical searchers amongst us. John Russia 14 December '01 The View From the USSR Ever had a burning urge to watch the coronation of Tsar Nicholas II? Or witness the heroics of Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space? Or even relive the Soviet invasions of Hungary and Czechoslovakia? Up until now it has been virtually impossible with all 38,000 films and 1 million photographs of Russia's Central Films and Stills Archive held in guarded vaults in a 19th century building in Krasnogorsk, outside Moscow, and access granted only to a select few. However, the entire collection is being placed online, including a virtually complete collection of newsreels from 1919 to 1985 documenting the politics, wars, disasters and people of the former United Soviet Socialist Republic. The project is being realized thanks to an agreement between Russian authorities and a Texas-based multimedia companyAbamedia, whose website hosts the archive. Already there are over 25,000 films in Russian and about 5000 films in English online, as well as thousands of pictures - from Soviet propaganda posters to oriental art from the Far East and Central As
