Digest Number 17: Books about Kresy Deportations

Elizabeth Olsson

Hi all,

Just to get the facts straight:

My mother, Danuta Gradosielska (in London) was one of the editors of the
first book, "Z Kresow Wschodnich R.P. Wspomnienia z Osad Wojskowych
1921-1940". She has written two articles in this book, pages 231 and
247, describing her life on Osada Krechowiecka, just outside Rowne,
Wolyn (now Rivno, Ukraine) My copy of this book was published in 1992,
429 pages.

The second book is a follow-up "Z Kresow Wschodnich R.P. Na Wygnanie
Opowiesci Zeslancow 1940-1946" and her article is on pages 178-190 (the
last page has a photo of our family, including me!)

These two books were written in Polish and subsequently both books were
combined and translated into English, including my mother's articles, in
"Stalin's Ethnic Cleansing in Eastern Poland - Tales of the Deported
1940-1946", published almost one year ago. I don't know the name of the
translator but I was told he's English (Stefan must know his name, he
has a copy of the book)

So I don't understand why you say you can't find these "in the original
books". Even if there are later editions I don't think they would have
left out any of the original accounts!

<<<Janina Stobnik's story does not appear in either.>>> Janina
Stobniak-Smogorzewska is my mother's childhood friend from Osada
Krechowiecka. She has written the historical introduction to the first
book and I believe to "Stalin's Ethnic....." too. I really must get a
copy of it myself!

The story on Paul's Kresy page () is
my mother's dairy and almost exactly the same as the articles in the
above 3 books - I changed them slightly because she was a bit worried
about copyright violation. Hope you find it interesting reading.

As a matter of interest, there were 134 plots of land and houses at the
Osada. Now there is only one house left - and that's my Mother's!! I
visited it a few years ago. Unfortunatly the land was just used as
pasture for cows. I was told that no one knew who the land belonged to
nowadays, and in any case they didn't have any farm equipment or tools
to farm with, they couldn't even afford to buy seeds!

Edward

The story on my web page isn't in the book. It's a personal recollection
of
Elizabeth's mother that Elizabeth kindly allowed me to publish.
Both the book titles are at the bottom of the page, the English version
is
|-------------------------------------------------------------------------------|
| From The Eastern Borderlands of Poland, Memories of military
settlements |
|
1921-1940 |
|-------------------------------------------------------------------------------|

I do not have the right to question any accounts in these books as my
family didn't have to make that terrible journey.

Paul, what is the title of the english version and where did you get it &
how much is it.
The sample story in the site > is
not in the original books of which there were 2 editions, 1996 of 700 p and
1998 of 450 p. Janina Stobnik's story does not appear in either. I also
question Tomasz Piesakowski's claim of authorship of the english translation
of these collective authiorships.

Thanks Ed,
The good news is that I have this book in it's English translation as well
as the Polish original. It is called "Stalin's Ethnic Cleansing in
Eastern Poland - Tales of the Deported 1940-1946". It is indeed a valuable book.
Marek Duchnowski, a recent member of our group, was responsible for
putting the book on the web - and if you visit the site, I'm sure you will agree
that it is a masterpiece!

Go to www.StalinsEthnicCleansing.com for more information on the English
version and for information on how to order copies. (Marek, this may be a
good time to get the publishers to accept credit cards and/or to accept US
funds).

The best source of information about Kresy is the book "Z Kresow
Wschodnich R.P. Na Wygnanie". It is a collection of memories and descriptions of
settlements of 142 survivors of Kresy from almost as many Osady (settlements)
on the Kresy. Unfortunately it is only in Polish. I was told once that it is
being translated
