As you may have just heard, Yahoo is closing down all of its groups and deleting the message histories in just a few weeks: "Starting December 14, 2019 Yahoo Groups will no longer host user-created content on its sites. New content can no longer be uploaded after October 28, 2019. "

We have over 64,000 messages in the last 18 years of Yahoo group history, which is an invaluable resource, so we are looking into ways to archive those.

Meanwhile, however, the good thing is that we moved our group's hundreds and hundreds of photo files into our Virtual Museum 10 years ago (see https://kresy-siberia.org/museum/).

Fortunately, we also moved our active discussions to Facebook a few years ago and now have about 2000 friendly and supportive members there. The very best thing to do is to be a member of the group on its new platform at https://www.facebook.com/groups/KresySiberiaGroup/.

Kresy-Siberia Group's official Facebook discussion forum remains dedicated to research, recognize and remember Poland’s citizens fighting for survival and freedom in eastern Poland and in forced exile during WW2.

Gianforte Announces Spirit of Montana Recipient: Alicja Edwards of Eureka

WASHINGTON �� Congressman Greg Gianforte recognized Alicja Edwards of Eureka with his Spirit of Montana commendation for her indomitable resolve, strength and courage, and inspiring memoires of the Polish diaspora.

A survivor of German attacks in Poland and forced labor in a Soviet gulag, Edwards overcame the atrocities of war and documented the journey of her family and thousands of other Poles in two books. Edwards owns an antique and art shop in Eureka where she paints, plays the piano, and inspires others.

Gianforte’s Spirit of Montana is a weekly recognition of Montanans for their accomplishments, dedication, or service. Gianforte highlights the recipient in the U.S. House of Representatives and personally contacts the honorees.

RECOGNIZING ALICJA EDWARDS OF EUREKA

Mr. Speaker, I rise today to honor Alicja Edwards of Eureka, a Montana artist, author, and World War II refugee, who overcame the atrocities of war and recorded her family’s journey as part of the historic diaspora of the Polish people.

When she was a teenager, Alicja’s small town in eastern Poland came under attack by Nazi Germany and suffered a brutal Soviet occupation. She and her family were forced into a Soviet gulag where they endured mistreatment, illness, and hunger.

Three years later, Alicja and thousands of other Poles were exiled to Iran. It was there where she met American Army Lieutenant Ernest Edwards who she married in 1945. The couple raised two children, lived in Japan, France, and America, and were married 50 years before Ernest’s passing.

Alicja is renowned for her memoires, And God Was Our Witness and They Called Us D.P.’s, that detail the suffering of her family and hundreds of thousands of Poles displaced during and after World War II.

In And God Was Our Witness, she describes the value of freedom and liberty:

“Priceless Freedom has never been perceived or truly understood by anyone, till it was lost or forcibly taken away. Only then, one becomes aware of the magnitude of its potency and power in directing one's life and fate.��

Alicja is a noted artist and owns an antique and art shop in Eureka, where she continues to paint, play the piano, and inspire others.

will be released this year or next.

Kaleidoscope Film Distribution has published the teaser for “Hurricane,��
which will tell the story of No 303 "Warsaw-Kosciuszko" Squadron of the
RAF, whose Polish pilots performed remarkably during the Battle of
Britain. The story is set to be seen through the eyes of Polish ace Jan
Zumbach.

Squadron Leader / Major Jan Eugenius Ludwik Zumbach was born 1915 in
Warsaw but registered as a Swiss citizen because of his paternal
grandparents. He joined the Polish army in 1934 and transferred to the
air force two years later. He was badly injured in a crash before the
German invasion but managed to rejoin his unit as it evacuated through
Romania, Bulgaria, and the Mediterranean. He briefly flew a
Morane-Saulnier 406 in the Battle of France. On June 10, 1940, he was
one of three M-S 406 pilots who downed a much superior Bf-109 but were
themselves shot down by other Messerschmitts. He bailed out and managed
to get on a ship to England on June 18, where he joined 303 Squadron for
the Battle of Britain. Flying Hurricanes, Spitfires, and a Mustang, he
was credited with 12 planes destroyed in the air, 2 planes shared, and 5
probables.

Postwar (though I would be surprised if the film goes into this) he
obtained a Swiss passport and flew contraband around Europe and the
Middle East, and in the 1960s flew as a mercenary pilot for the
short-lived African nations of Katanga and Biafra under the nom de
guerre of John Brown. He then returned to France and settled down,
publishing his autobiography as "On Wings of War." He died in 1986.

Well, just maybe. The Oct 1945 marriage certificate of my father Wachmistr Sierzant Walerian Julian Stopnicki, after being invalided out in Dec 1944 the 1st Armoured Corps, had a witness B. or might be F. Gorski. There is Brunon Gorski listed on your documents. It’s a pretty big longshot if they are the same Gorski.

We have been trying to discover who Gorski was, either an Army friend or a colleague at the Polish Embassy. We have a photo of him (maybe) with Walerian in 1943 or 1944 in Scotland in Polish 1st Corps uniform. Gorski of the marriage certificate could have been a colleague from the Polish Embassy as the Certificate states that Walerian was a 2nd Secretary (Agriculture) at the Polish Embassy, which in October 1945 was, I presume, the Soviet one. We don’t know if Walerian actually was at the Embassy. But, as he returned to Poland (with my English mother) to work for the Polish “Soviet�� Government, it just might be true.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to discover the reality of this Embassy/Soviet connection?

Sybirak Starszy Sierżant Walerian Julian Stopnicki, after being released from a Soviet prison (Starobielsk) was assigned to an Agricultural Battalion on 12th January 1942 in Dżyzak in Uzbekistan prior to evacuation; we are not sure if it was in March or April 1942. He was certainly at Pahlavi by early May 1942, where he met his daughter (my sister) Krystyna for the last time. He arrived in Scotland at the Kirkcaldy Polish Army Distribution Camp on 17th October 1942 (via the Near East and Capetown) and was assigned to the 1st Armoured Corps of the 1st Polish Armoured Division. But he was mentally unfit and was assigned to various support brigades (and including both working and treatment at the Edinburgh Polish Military Hospital, before being invalided out of the Army (also after an arrest for theft) in December 1944. He returned to Szczecin at the end of 1945, working for the Communist Government in re-assigning German farms to Polish family displaced from Eastern Poland. He lived with my mother, his second wife (although he wasn’t divorced, and his first wife had also escaped the USSR and arrived in the UK with my sister Krystyna in 1950, after years at Tengeru) in a British Liaison Mission monitoring the displacement of Germans from Western Poland, in Szczecin. We are still investigating what Walerian did in London in 1945. His marriage certificate to my Mum in October 1945 declared that he worked at the Polish Embassy, which would have been the Soviet one at the time, but, along with the lie about being divorced and ten years younger than reality, maybe this was also a lie.

The Karamin was a mistranslation. The boat was actually called ASTRAKHAN.
