On the 71st anniversary of the first arrivals in Pahlevi I send you links to the Pahlevi reports from the UK National Archives!
There are two from Lt. Col. Ross (one for March - April and the other for August ?€¡° September 1942). There is also a 3rd report from Lt. Col Ata-Ullah from the Indian Field Ambulance service.
All fascinating with extremely valuable information on the arrivals in Pahlevi. Hopefully provides many of the missing pieces in your research.
Ross mentions a German plane flying overhead in September. Maybe the one which took the aerial photos of the camps!
All the best

Dear Janusz, Thank you so much! What amazing documents. My father was one of the sailors in the very first evacuation so it was fascinating to read. Apologies if I have missed something but did you actually go to Kew and find these documents. I have previously found lots of the War Cabinet reports from the National Archives online with regard to mention of the Polish Forces. But I just wonder.... what other treasures are in the National Archives! Does anybody else have experience finding documents there?
Thank you so much again, very valuable.

Fw: Katyn/Tver

Dear Mark,

Maybe you missed out reading my last letter to you. I will always grateful for your email giving information regarding my grandfather Antoni Bogielski (Bugalski), son of Antoniego, born 1891- Tver.?Katyn# 11949.The family had no idea about this!

Can you please share with me the source of this vital information, I will be most grateful.

I also wonder if someone can be kind enough to tell me if Tver is the same place as Kalinin and Ostaszkov lager to which the NKWD sent the POW'S??

AND

How can one access the dated list of POW'S that were sent from Ostaszkov lager to Tver??
I would very much like to search for my grandfather's name on any such list to give me an idea of when he was arrested and moved from each place until his final end.

Thanks to everyone for being so helpful and kind, without you I would never have been able to gather this wealth of information and share of our common heritage.

Dear Mark,
Today I read some of your exchanges with Jolanta regarding Katyn.

You had very kindly sent me information about my grandfather Antoni Bugalski- Tver.

Can you send me the link where I can also see his name please? I presume that Tver was a camp/prison? How long were they kept there? Was he buried in Tver or shot and buried in Katyn?

Until you sent me that last email I was never sure that his name was in the Katyn list.

Regards,
Farrah.

Very interesting, Frances. It was not obvious to me from the review whether this is about the first (March-April) transport or August transport, though "one of the last transports" suggests the latter. Does anyone on forum have Richard Lysakowski's book "Siberian Odyssey: The Song of the Cornucopia", and can you clear up that question?
This is the first mention I have seen of a freighter named "Baku", though I have not yet fully read a huge draft document that Stan has put together so it may be there. Stan has already done an immense amount of work on this and is still hard at it.
Many reports indicate the Krasnovodsk-Pahlevi crossing took a little over a day, depending on the ship, weather conditions, mechanical problems, etc. So this instance of "three days and two nights" implies problems on this particular trip unless the vessel was exceptionally slow.
Another book for my reading list. Thank you.

For John and Stan

Alexandra - thank you for describing your family's tumultuous journey of survival. The Caspian Sea is truly treacherous? - and it's hard to imagine how your parents must have felt at the time .... especially after all their horrific experiences.

I'm now adding something I have just found about the length of time taken to cross the Caspian Sea --? (irrespective of the date of leaving)

Richard was on one of the last transports to leave for?the port of Krasnovodsk on the Caspian Sea. The ship for the crossing to?Persia was a freighter called the Baku. He was very ill and Red Cross personnel carried him onto the ship on a stretcher.
"In the three days and two nights that it took us to travel across a wide stretch of this great inland sea, I was able to get up, eat well, and walk cautiously around the deck. (p. 198)"

From - http://www.derekcrowe.com/post.aspx?id=139? about the book by Ryszard Lysakowski,? Siberian Odyssey which has been mentioned on this website in 2002 and 2011.

Your "small piece of information" may have tacked down the date of the storm, Alexandra!
From other reports discussed here recently it was not clear whether a big storm happened the night of March 27-28 or March 28-29, but if you and your parents were already in Pahlevi March 28 it had to be the former.
Indeed, there may have been more than one storm. However, many reports speak of a calm crossing so until more facts emerge my hypothesis is that there was one severe storm and it was the night of March 27-28.
Your contribution illustrates that every bit of such information posted to the forum is of immense importance. I hope it will inspire others to share their stories, because even if a particular detail appears "small" on its own it becomes part of a larger picture and brings it into sharper focus. Many thanks.

Dear Stan, John, Frances et al
?
This topic still seems to attract interest of the group, so I will add my small piece of information about arrival dates from Krasnovodsk to Pahlevi, and the storm on the Caspian Sea.
?
We?(father, who was in the Air Force, mother and I) made the journey down the Caspian in March 1942.? I grew up?knowing the story of the terrible storm that occurred during our crossing;? my father lashed the three of us to some sort of fixed post on the deck of the ship (name unknown) to save us from being washed overboard, but a small quantity of 'black flour' Mama had saved was lost to the waves.? I have recently come across a photograph of Mama and me (a babe in arms) standing on what appears to be a wharf.? In the background are crowds of people (both men and women) some of whom are wearing army greatcoats.? On the back my father has written 'Pahlevi. 28.lll.1942.?' and, in Polish, a sentence which Stefan Wisnowski has translated for me as 'First steps beyond the border'.??I understand this to mean that this photo was taken?immediately after?we arrived in Pahlevi, Persia?from Krasnovodsk, Russia.
?
I had?assume that we left Krasnovodsk on 27 March, and arrived on 28 March.? If indeed we were on a ship that drifted for days because of a storm at sea we must have left several days earlier.? I wonder if there was more than one stormy crossing, which accounts for the confusion with dates.
?
Kind regards

Hi Anna

I don't know whether your father was naturalised in the UK.? I managed to get a copy of my father's naturalisation papers from the National Archives. I came across a link accidentally having been searching my father's name on line.? When I tried to open the link it was marked closed for, I think, 100 years.? I got in touch with the National Archives and they said that if I could prove that I was the closest living next of kin? that they could open them and I could go to Kew and take a copy. So I have a copy and it is a fantastic source of information.? Please note though the these papers remain the copyright of the National Archives.

Martin, I think they must exist, but probably the best place to look is at the Sikorski as I think they have the fullest records.

Anna, my Mother and Great Aunt worked at the same hospital as your Aunt.

My Mother told of also working at a hospital/ward which dealt exclusively with tubercular patients. There were American medical staff there, and they were all told to smoke as the tar from the cigarettes would coat their lungs and prevent them from catching TB. I think this one was also in Teheran but could not guarantee it as she worked in hospitals in Ahwaz and Karachi too.

Best wishes,

Good idea about having a special flier for the event. Let's discuss off line and if there are any members who would like to help with this task or be involved in our Navy gallery or can come to Liverpool please let us know.

Also I wonder given we have been talking about doing Polish Navy research/galleries with KSVM if we should produce some sort of Kresy-Siberia flier for the day... asking for veterans / relatives of veterans to come forward with photographs, materials, memoirs, information etc. We could also have some information on there about Kresy-Siberia Virtual Museum (Galleries on Polish Forces in the West) and include donation information.

If you think this might be OK, I could draft something?

I was particularly interested in the August / Second evacuations report as this was when my family of four - on three separate ships - came to Persia. Give that this was an official report the author¡¯s horror is evident to see at times, and immensely moving.
?
One sentence was particularly shattering, referring to children placed in special hospital camps at Pahlevi?"Their average stay in the camp was 7 and 1/2 days and their average increase in weight during this period was 21lbs 1oz."
?
How starved must you be to be able to put on a stone and a half - or 9.5kg - in a week? Dad said he estimated whether he was getting worse or better by seeing if he could still put his hand round his thigh and be able to make the middle finger and thumb touch at the other side.
?
One question for the group: Do we have other official reports from the British, Indian, American or Polish medical and armed forces about the situation in Teheran? My father said he was in a makeshift hospital there, his bed between factory machinery, and was tended to by Americans. I would have thought that somewhere individuals¡¯ names would be recorded, possibly medical records, date of entry and departure from camps or hospitals etc.
?
It is these dates that I am particularly missing in the timeline of my family. When did each family member - there were four - arrive in Pahlevi, be hospitalised there, leave hospital there, be taken to Teheran, be hospitalised or encamped there, leave hospital there, and finally leave Teheran for Palestine, or in Dad¡¯s case Basra, Iraq.
?
My guess is that these details do exist. They had to otherwise the army wouldn¡¯t know if people went missing or deserted or died.
?
Warm regards

Dear Group,
?
I have now added these files to the Kresy-Siberia Virtual Museum.? They are in the Hall of Memories at the following link ....
?
I caution you that these files are quite large and do take a while to open even if you have high-speed internet access, so please be patient.
?
Thank you, Jan, for making them available to us.
?

Kind regards,

Stan and John

On the 71st anniversary of the first arrivals in Pahlevi I send you links to the Pahlevi reports from the UK National Archives!

There are two from Lt. Col. Ross (one for March - April and the other for August ¨C September 1942).

Janusz
