Digital ops - FT4/8 F&H mode?
Any K2B ops who want to use F&H mode in FT4 or FT8, there is a raging debate among the states/colonies as to whether this mode should be permitted.? As my digital operation is zero, can you opine??
My understanding is this is a mode only used by DXpeditions, and allows them to harvest 100-plus QSOs per hour.? Do we care?? Should we care? |

While I do work FT4 on sats from time to time, I have never used F&H. So I¡¯m not going to get into it now. In general, I don¡¯t think it¡¯s a good idea. Imagine numerous strong FT4 signals pumping the birds¡¯ power budgets and AGCs. Also possible?passband congestion on the narrower birds.? I am likely to do some FT4 during the 13 Colonies, but probably not a lot since I think?more ops are going to be?looking for phone or cw QSOs. 73, Ray KN2K On Tuesday, June 21, 2022, 5:36 PM, David Wright <dwright@...> wrote:

I plan to use FT8 some of the time for K2B and I operate the mode a lot for my own fun.? Done well, F/H certainly maximizes the number of people who can log the desired station. If chasers don¡¯t take the time to learn the fairly simple ropes for operating as a Hound, they will be annoying. The same, of course, can be said of chasers who don¡¯t know how to behave in a phone or CW pileup.? I have never operated as a Fox, only as a Hound. I don¡¯t think this event would be a good time for *me* to learn how to be a Fox. I want to help people have fun, not irritate them by not knowing what I am doing and messing up.? On the whole, I don¡¯t see the virtue of prohibiting F/H. It feels to me a lot like trying to micromanage other people¡¯s fun.? 73, Kay N3KN On Tue, Jun 21, 2022 at 5:36 PM David Wright <dwright@...> wrote: Any K2B ops who want to use F&H mode in FT4 or FT8, there is a raging debate among the states/colonies as to whether this mode should be permitted.? Note: my comments concern only satellite operation. I have no opinion one way or the other about terrestrial operations.

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHaving just read the instructions / guidelines (I know real hams aren¡¯t supposed to do that but don¡¯t judge me! <grin> ) for Fox/Hound operation, two things are clear to me now. One is that I would have no business trying to learn on the fly to be a Fox because I would mess up spectacularly. The other is that the software authors flat-out state that F/H is not for anything other than DXpedition-type operations and that it isn¡¯t for use on the usual FTx frequencies. So, even if I knew how to be a Fox, I would choose not to do it for 13 Colonies. I¡¯ll do plain old FT8 on the usual frequencies. On that note, I¡¯ll take Will Rogers¡¯ advice never to miss an opportunity to shut up. Have fun on Field Day, y¡¯all. 73, Kay N3KN
