40 meter SSB

Yesterday I operated 40 meters SSB from 7 to 9 pm.? My pace was comfortable.? I had a few QSOs here and there but rarely swamped by more than three calls at once.? There were 5- or 10-minute intervals with nothing. At 9 pm I handed K2B off to K2LLC and he was immediately (and I mean immediately) swamped with a pileup.? How can that be?

Hi Bill,

I have noticed over the past few weeks that 40 meters starts to open up at my QTH between 8:30 and 9:30. I tuned into you around 8:45 so I could see how things were going and try to let you know that I was there to pick up for you at 9. There were a lot of stations calling you that I could hear but did not know if you were hearing them or not. You were being consistently called and you answered and did well! I lost you in the noise right at 9 so I can only assume the band changed right about then. Fortunately there was a station in place that relayed for us and I was able to pick up. And I was surprised at the number of calls, but that's also what happened last Friday night when I picked up at 9 on 40.

The bands are very unpredictable and all we can do is run with the ball as best we can. You did great and I was able to follow along behind you. That's a win in my book for all of us!
