13 Colonies 2024
Here is the overview from Ken about 2024 13 Colonies.
I have already started researching this. Anyone have any particular knowledge / expertise in this area? The 2024 theme for the 13 Colonies SE this year is "Colony State Militias".. Every state has tons of different formed citizen Militias! They are all on the internet. Pick one out, and highlight them for your QSL card for your state!. These were the State Volunteers!
The term "Minute Men" is a blanket meaning for the over-all citizen soldiers so I will use that term and graphics for the main certificate. You can use a special flag, seal/badge/uniform/soldiers, any graphic you can find!?
Even if your State Militia of choice had a famous leader?? You can mention this but try to high light the group as a whole.

开云体育Interesting theme, and I’m eager to learn what you find out.?So happens that my Revolutionary War ancestor was an officer in a militia in western South Carolina. Oops, wrong colony! I learned only recently that he was in a militia rather than the regular colonial army. From the history I’ve read, it seems like the militias were key in winning the war — along, of course, with support from France. 73, Kay N3KN

Could I suggest Morgan's Riflemen of Virginia, also known as Morgan's sharpshooters?? They used rifles, as their name implies, which were much more accurate with longer range than the smooth bore muskets in common military use at the time.? Morgan and his men became quite famous during the Rev War. There is some good history written of them out there, but any specific title escapes me right now. Chuck K4QS

Jim Morgan
I like that suggestion.
I have a biography of Daniel Morgan/Revolutionary Rifleman by Don Higginbotham, which I'd be glad to lend if it would be helpful.? I found another book online called "Revolutionary rangers : Daniel Morgan's riflemen and their role on the northern frontier, 1778-1783" by Richard LaCrosse.? I don't have a copy and can't vouch for it. Wikipedia has a page on Morgan's Riflemen and a Google search turns up other articles.? There are some paintings of Daniel Morgan but don't know of one with the Riflemen as a group. Daniel Morgan's home was in Winchester, but I believe most of his military fame came from battles outside Virginia, especially Cowpens (South Carolina).? The last battle of the movie "The Patriot" follows the battle of Cowpens very closely. Let me know if someone would like to borrow the book. Vy 73, Jim W4QE |
开云体育Daniel Morgan would be fantastic. I didn’t realize he was from Va. That seems to check all the boxes. Maybe I should make our friends to the South aren’t also using him. David, K2WPM ? From: [email protected] <[email protected]>

Thanks for all the replies and emails.
I tried for weeks to get a nice graphic for Daniel Morgan, probably the best that VA could offer. Although born in NJ, claimed by PA, glory in SC. A towering figure from Winchester. But I always try to get permission to use graphics. Copyright is a nasty set of laws. And it's the right thing to do, ask permission, even though our use is probably "Fair Use." The artist who did Daniel Morgan at Cowpens flatly said no to any use of that image. What a jerk. Anyway, I went back to Great Bridge, a pivotal battle. I went to the site and explained our event, and they are okay using a good graphic. Recommend everyone check them out; fantastic museum in Chesapeake. And buy a brick if you're there. So here is the hopefully final K2B QSL card for 2024. Gotta send to the printer next week. David K2WPM |
