Thanks Wes, appreciate that. Sounds like consensus will be to (a) ask for $5 or $10 each to defray costs, and (b) keep the costs down.

I'm certainly willing to contribute to the cause.
We seem to have enough operators that it shouldn't be a financial burden for each of us to do so.

Hi David - this is just my opinion and I can go with the flow. My general thought is to reduce the overall costs, first. As an operator, I don't need any more certificates, although I appreciate the 'thanks'. You can probably just email the certificate instead
of printing and mailing them.
I'm not sure I'm incentivized to be in the top 5 for a mug. Operating as K2B is a blast/honor and I really enjoy it. Maybe you could note the "top 5" standing in the digital certificate?
Can we send the QSL cards digitally? I know some people like paper cards. Maybe there is a way to request a card instead of automatically sending cards to everybody?
Finally - if you need $10 - $25 to support the effort from me, just let me know. I'm willing to donate to help defray the operational costs.

Good Morning David!
??????????????? Sorry to hear about Ken. ?I hope his health will get better. And let¡¯s hope his successor will be easy to work with and a great replacement (if that is possible!). And thank you again
for your commitment of time and resources, organization and leadership for us! ?What a great guy to work for - even if you are a lawyer hahaha! ?(I can say that because my daughter is a lawyer!)?
??????????????? Here are my thoughts in order of questions presented:
1.? Should we have a rule that all K2B ops contribute $5 to $10 each to defray these expenses? ?
Yes - I ?don¡¯?think it is too much to ask to help offset the expense. And I don¡¯t think it is right for you to cover all the costs.
2.? If not, does anyone know where/how I could solicit donation of a small sum annually to defray costs. ?I think we operators can cover it.
3.? Would you prefer I not send the hard copy certificates -- instead I could do digital ones?? (that saves maybe $100).
From a pervious suggestion I think offering digital as the first option, and then printed cards as the 2nd would be a good idea. ?Wait until all the orders come in for QSL cards, and then print what you need.
4.? Should I not buy mugs for top ops? (that saves about $120).
It¡¯s a nice thought, but some sort of digital certificate would also serve the purpose. ?I know I have a bazillion coffee mugs so not sure one more would actually stand out in the crowd. ?BUT I understand totally the
recognition and the reminder of that accomplishment. ?A digital certificate could be used as a computer desktop screen saver, then you get to see that recognition all the time!!!!!!
5.? If I don't have expenses #3 and #4, I can buy the QSL cards. ?You are the boss - you can do whatever you want as far as I am concerned¡..
6.? This also means no more bling.
I certainly appreciate the Bling associated with the event, and I am grateful for those who have contributed to making that happen. ?If it means we can cover other expenses that need to take place (QSL Cards, etc.) then I vote for less or no Bling.?
??????????????? Thanks again for the leadership! ?Looking forward to being an Op this year!

I'm glad the event will continue and appreciate what you and the other leaders are doing to ensure that. I hope Ken's health will be okay.
Should we have a rule that all K2B ops contribute $5 to $10 each to defray these expenses?
If not, does anyone know where/how I could solicit donation of a small sum annually to defray costs.
Response: There may be operators who, for whatever reason, can't contribute money, so I wouldn't want this to be a hard & fast rule. However, I think that explaining what the expenses are and inviting operators
to contribute as their personal circumstances permit is a good idea. I will certainly be happy to put some $$ in the hat once you determine what the budget's going to be. No way should this all be on you.
Question 3: Would you prefer I not send the hard copy certificates -- instead I could do digital ones?? (that saves maybe $100)
Response: Yes! Major state QSO Parties are doing only electronic certificates now, so changing to digital certificates shouldn't shock anybody. Certificate-generating software exists, so that wheel doesn't
have to be invented from scratch.
I think we can do without the mugs and bling. Just being part of this event is an honor and a lot of fun for me.
I'm glad the event can continue. As for the other guy, well, I hope his operating is better than his arithmetic.

Good Morning David!
Sorry to hear about Ken. ?I hope his health will get better. And let¡¯s hope his successor will be easy to work with and a great replacement (if that is possible!). And thank you again for your commitment of time and resources, organization and leadership for us! ?What a great guy to work for - even if you are a lawyer hahaha! ?(I can say that because my daughter is a lawyer!)?
?BUT I understand totally the recognition and the reminder of that accomplishment.
Thanks again for the leadership! ?Looking forward to being an Op this year!

Hi David - this is just my opinion and I can go with the flow. My
general thought is to reduce the overall costs, first. As an
operator, I don't need any more certificates, although I
appreciate the 'thanks'. You can probably just email the
certificate instead of printing and mailing them.
I'm not sure I'm incentivized to be in the top 5 for a mug.
Operating as K2B is a blast/honor and I really enjoy it. Maybe you
could note the "top 5" standing in the digital certificate?
Can we send the QSL cards digitally? I know some people like
paper cards. Maybe there is a way to request a card instead of
automatically sending cards to everybody?
Finally - if you need $10 - $25 to support the effort from me,
just let me know. I'm willing to donate to help defray the
operational costs.

I'm certainly willing to contribute to the cause.
We seem to have enough operators that it shouldn't be a financial burden for each of us to do so.

I wanted to let everyone know that Ken, KU2US, the founder and boss of 13 Colonies, has retired due to health issues.? He appointed a successor, Tony N4ATJ.? I had hoped he would leave it to the colony-managers to carry on the show but that's not happening.?
We have a Zoom call tomorrow (Friday May 2) evening to discuss the Special Event going forward.?
?
I've been told -- in addition to the huge investment of time and expense I already make -- I am asked to pay for 1,000 QSL cards, costing about $150, this year.
?
In the past, Ken paid for these -- I understand from the monies he netted on certificate fulfillment ($5 solicited, actual cost of certificates and postage $2, leaving a net of about $4,500 a year on 1,500 certificates sent out;? some of this revenue was
used to pay for QSLs).? (I also assume Ken donated his own funds to this event, which is why I usually sent him $25 or $50).
?
Two other colony managers told me they get donations to pay for their QSLs.? Any idea who I would solicit?? Should I ask K2B ops for small contributions?? I've always been happy to invest my own funds (a) as annual donation to Ken to help him cover costs,
(b) to pay to have full-color certificates printed and mailed to K2B ops, (c) for mugs for top 5 ops, for Ken and for Rhonda our QSL manager, and (d) occasional bling (except that Steve KO4ENU has contributed very generously in the bling department!).? Also
thank K2B ops for sending me occasional extra monies (thanks Carol, KG4DTM and others).? But last year I invested over $300 -- starting to sound like real money!
?
May I solicit K2B ops input/consensus opinion:
?
1.? Should we have a rule that all K2B ops contribute $5 to $10 each to defray these expenses?
2.? If not, does anyone know where/how I could solicit donation of a small sum annually to defray costs.
3.? Would you prefer I not send the hard copy certificates -- instead I could do digital ones?? (that saves maybe $100)
4.? Should I not buy mugs for top ops? (that saves about $120)
5.? If I don't have expenses #3 and #4, I can buy the QSL cards.
6.? This also means no more bling.
?
Thoughts?
?
Also, anyone who has not already contacted me, but who would like to participate in K2B this year, please contact me by email.
?
Thanks,
?
David, K2WPM
?
P.S.,? Did you see that the 13 Colonies wannabe guy is having a special event July 1 - 13, 2025 celebrating America's 250th birthday (which isn't until 2026 by my math)?
That will really help to confuse everyone!

Re: 2024 Results and post event thoughts; Berryville
Whether or not one gives a hoot about how they add up in a competitive way, the numbers show that we colonials are providing a heck of a lot of our fellow hams with the fun of chasing an award that means something to them.?
The event sure has come a long way from the beginning, when each colony had just 2 operators, who were often unable to cope because they were not sufficiently experienced in this kind of operating. It was so painful to listen to their struggling that I quit chasing the award.?
I enjoy being part of this now and hope to be involved again next year. Special thanks to you, David, for your leadership and coordination work. We¡¯ll keep trying not to make your job too much like herding cats. Or goldfish. 73, Kay N3KN
