Working on HT-32B & Weight Lifting

开云体育

I just got done emailing a good friend, about my initial start up work on the restoration of a HT-32B and how extremely heavy it was for this old man, I'm 66, to carry it ten feet over to my repair bench.? Having just completed restoration on the SR-150/SP-150 pair it has been an eye opener.

From here I highlight quote my earlier email, "
I removed the HT-32B's cabinet to allow proceeding with the restore work.? After cleaning dirt off the lower inside part of the case, in the kitchen sink, I realized 'gosh this case is kinda heavy'.? Put it on my shipping scale and sure enough it's 17.5 lbs, with the lid fan still attached.? So the transmitter guts are a mere 67.5 lbs on their own - somewhat spoken sarcastically.? Guess what, the SR-150 weights 17.5 lbs!? Yes, just the cabinet on the HT-32B weights the same as the whole SR-150 transceiver, less power supply that is.

Thought the group might find this weight fact amusing.? I will die with my SX-115 and HT-32B pair, or at least be in a vegetative state, as I am not going to be the one dragging this stuff out of my basement shack!"

Don,

?

Same age here.? I’m wrapping up a power transformer replacement on an HT-37 transmitter. ?Its weight is a good match for the HT-32B.?

?

Each time it required moving during the work process, I had to first mediate – well, not real meditation in the Hindu sense, but I would first drink water, take a few deep breaths, close my eyes for a few seconds, then try my best to lift the transmitter with my legs, not by back – then hope it didn’t drop on the floor!? These are definitely transmitters for the well-fit youth.? ????

One reason I use, and like, my S-40B is that, at age 82 I can move it
around easily. I have an R-388 that is working fine, and a BC-342 that
has failed. Not hard to fix, probably, but difficult to move to a place
where I can work on it.

I bought the BC-342 in a surplus shop while I was in college in 1961 and
carried it about two miles (I think) to my dorm room. I recall that
being pretty tiring. Now I have to think carefully about moving it ten
feet.

What a timely discussion. At age 72, I too just finished working on my HT-37 doing the break-in keying modification. When I brought it to the bench, I really struggled. Just flipping it over on the bench a half dozen times while working on it was difficult. When it came time to return it to its operating position, I swallowed my pride and called my wife for help. We lifted it together to bring it back to the desk.

I too will die with mine too!!!!? Have the SX-115 my Dad gave me back in the '60's!? The HT-32B he gave me gave up years ago, and I didnt have the money to replace the transformer then.
?
Now I have a HT-32B, HT-32A, SX101, and 2 SX-115's!? Love them al, and use them every day.? Check out my QRZ page!.? Putting a new audio gain pot in the SX-115!? It is a real back buster, and it is not as heavy as the 32's!!!!? George KN3PAT

oh yes well fit youth. brings back memories of the early 60's as a 16 yr old ham lugging my WRL 350A onto the bench and then back to the op desk. hihi..The L4B power supplies keep getting heavier. have a Chippawal waiting in the wings to be restored. may have to buy an A frame for that one. took two of us to unload the power supply.

catching up to you fast Walt.

Believe it or not, the advertised weight of the R390A (85lb) is one pound less than the HT-32 (86lb).

All the observations mentioned by Don N9OO and others on here were part of the reason why I sold all my heavy radios. ?I sold the heaviest radio first, my Johnson Desk KW as it became physically difficult for me to pull that cage out of the cabinet, then the Collins KWS-1, Invader 2000, 32V2, 32V3, and Valiant, and many others. They had become too heavy for me to physically and safely move to the work bench or back room shelf when rotating radios. ?Now I have mostly lightweight radios left, with the Johnson Ranger being the heaviest. ?I can still move that....I think... ??
?
In hindsight, I should have bought a nice cart on wheels for moving radios from the operating bench to either the repair bench or the back room storage. ?Maybe a cart would be a good solution for safely moving your monster heavy radios. ?Just a thought OM.

Try moving a 6 gallon glass carboy of Rose’ wine, or you VRC-176 around.? I can still do it, but make sure my footing is solid and nothing slippery is under foot.? Safety’s very important for both of these hobbies. 82 and still at it.
