What does "Not Confirmed" mean?
New user tries to sign up.? Everything looks ok on member page -- except there is a "not confirmed" icon.
I can send him a message - but he gets no messages from the group and says he can't log in.? ? Thanks.

That means they haven't confirmed their email address with groups.io.? They were sent an email telling them how to do it.? If they don't have that email, you can send another by clicking on the row for their entry anyplace except on the check box.? On their membership page, scroll to the bottom and click on "Send Conformation Email".

They have to click on a link in that email to confirm that it's a legitimate address. If someone who either (a) has no existing Groups.io Account, or (b) has an account but proceeds without logging in to it, applies to join a Group then Groups.io wants to know that the request to join is "real" and not spurious, possibly to the point of being a spammer. In order to determine the legitimacy of the application Groups.io returns a message to the applicant which basically means "is this application real?" Only when that confirmation is returned does membership process move ahead.
However, it is all rather confusing; it also depends on whether the application comes in by email, or from a group webpage, and whether the group in question is "restricted" (the application requiring specific approval by an Owner or Moderator) or "unrestricted" (not requiring specific Owner or Moderator approval) as well as the (a) or (b) criteria mentioned in the paragraph above. The sequence can also be modified by whether or not the group in question makes use of "Pending Subscription" messages as part of its entry process. I said above "it is all rather confusing", and that is from the perspective of a group Moderator (me!) who has at least some idea about what is going on; how it looks to a random applicant I cannot begin to imagine. We get some applications showing up in "Pending Members" that expire after 14 days because the applicant does precisely nothing; others respond as required within minutes (including responding to the Pending Subscription message) and their becoming a member is smooth and untroubled. "Not Confirmed" means that the applicant has not confirmed that they really do want to join! Until they do then the application is automatically put on hold, although there is nothing to stop an O / M overriding that hold; arguably not a very good idea. When you referred to the "member page" I take it that you meant "Pending Member" page. There is a difference. Chris |

On a group that doesn't have restricted membership (no approval needed), they become a member, but have an NC by their name.? There is a Pending Approval page on these type groups, but there's never anyone shown there. In my (restricted) group we approved some members because they reacted to the Pending Member message introducing themselves, as required. Nevertheless, in the members' list they show with a NC badge. I sent them a confirmation mail but nothing changed. I'm not sure what to do. On the other hand, we have a pending member who's been sitting there for a quite while, since May 2. We sent him two confirmation mails with no success. I checked his delivery history and found this message dated May 3: "2.6.0 <[email protected]> [InternalId=11927124306244, Hostname=DB5EUR03HT080.eop-EUR03.prod.protection.outlook.com] 8748 bytes in 0.308, 27.729 KB/sec Queued mail for delivery " So, apparently, he did not even receive the two confirmation mails. The "not confirmed" concept is pretty straightforward but is rarely well-explained. In the following, I will often use the words "email address" and "account" interchangeably. In groups.io, they are the same thing.
It is possible to "create an account" (i.e.: a recognized email address) on groups.io by simply clicking on a subscription link. However, by this mechanism it is entirely possible to subscribe someone else's email address without their knowledge. The system needs to know two things at this point: 1) The person behind that email address really wants a groups.io account, and 2) The person is capable of receiving messages, or at least retrieving them in some way. To that end, a "confirmation email" is sent. Clicking on the link in that email confirms that at least one email got through and that the recipient really wants to receive more. At that point the "NC" status is removed and normal message delivery begins. "NC" status can also be removed if the user actually logs into groups.io using that email address. The presumption here is that the user will review group messages online; and might proceed to set their email delivery to "no email," although the latter is not a requirement to clear the status. To be absolutely clear, "NC" status is set for the account, not the group. Once an email address/account has cleared this once, that user can subsequently join other groups and receive messages immediately. More information on this than you might ever want to know can be found in the GMF wiki:??/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Status-Badges-in-the-Members-List? Those of you who feel this process to be a bunch of nonsense can override it all by paying for a Premium group and using Direct Add instead. Marina,
I agree that it is all a bit confusing.Bruce gave a good rundown of the status and why it exists. If there's anything I can clarify in the Wiki let me know. /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Status-Badges-in-the-Members-List Nevertheless, in the members' list they show with a NC badge. I sentThere's not much else you can do. Maybe those notices have landed in their spam folder, or they are simply ignoring them. If you have another way to reach those members you could try encouraging them to look for the confirmation notices and to follow the instructions in those emails. On the other hand, we have a pending member who's been sitting thereThat's actually a success code (2.x.x) - so outlook.com is saying that it had queued the message for delivery to the member. Of course it doesn't say /where/ it will deliver the message - to the member's Inbox or Spam or elsewhere.
