Welcome Message?

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I have just started testing groups.io as a replacement for our yahoo group. It looks very promising thus far and I am excited to have found it.

Here is my newbie question...I went to customize the Welcome Letter, but there is no welcome letter there. I was looking in Admin|Settings|MemberNotices. I can create a new notice in there, but I thought there would be a default one to customize. Do I need to just write my own from scratch? If so, does anyone have a template I can copy?

Thanks!

Patti,

I went to customize the Welcome Letter, but there is no welcome
letter there.
I thought there was a default Welcome notice. But the user interface for Member Notices has changed radically since I last set up a new group, so maybe not.

a template I can copy?
Here's the one that "came with" my test group, I don't think I ever edited it. Naturally your group's name should appear instead of "shalstest":

That's pretty bland boilerplate if you ask me.

The Welcome message for this group, GMF, which you should have recently received, is more extensive and gives a lot of background information particular to this group and its goals. Its text probably won't be a useful template for your group, but it might inspire some thoughts about things you might want to include in yours.

Right, there's no more default welcome message. I was surprised, as well. (I happened to create a new group recently - TerribleWriting, in case anyone is interested in joining! - which is how I know.)

Patti,

In the left column on my groups.io home screen, when I click
on "Admin" then "Invite" there appears an "Invitation to be
sent". Just below the standard invitation message there is
"Customize Message" which gives the owner/moderator a space
to enter their additional comments.

This has worked for invitees to the three groups I have
transferred this year. I don't remember if those transferred
from the original Yahoo groups received a welcome message or
if they were just transferred since they did not need to
accept the an invitation.

Bob,

I don't remember if those transferred from the original Yahoo groups
received a welcome message ...
The rule used to be that they'd get a copy of the group's Welcome notice only if the group had edited it. I guess now that there is no default message the rule would be "if the group has one".

Whether or not the group has a welcome notice, the transferred members get a notice from Groups.io itself letting them know that they've been added to the Groups.io group.

In the left column on my groups.io home screen, when I click
on "Admin" then "Invite" there appears an "Invitation to be
sent". Just below the standard invitation message there is
"Customize Message" which gives the owner/moderator a space
to enter their additional comments.
Note that the group's Welcome notice is separate from any customization you put on an invitation. All invitees get the invitation, but I believe that only those who accept the invitation get the group's Welcome notice.

Thanks everyone! I actually like Bob's idea of the Invitation message better
than using a welcome message. I want to let users know to add the Groups'
email address to their 'safe senders' list, as I found that most of my test
messages were being marked as spam (Yahoo's SpamGuard seems a little
overzealous).

I'm not quite sure what you mean, but you do realize that the invitation serves a completely different purpose, right? It's for people who are not yet in your group, and it will send them a link to click on to accept the invitation. It is not what you want to use as a welcome message, unless you're referring to some text in it with information about the group. I'm not sure how robust the system is in terms of bad things happening if you send an invitation to someone already in the group, but it's not something you want to do.

If you'll be transferring members from a Yahoo Group they won't need an invitation. They'll be directly added to your Groups.io group by the transfer agent. So the Welcome notice is your option for them.

'safe senders' list, as I found that most of my test messages were

You probably want to send a Special Notice or other communication within you Yahoo Group before starting the transfer - just so the members know what's about to happen and don't assume there's something nefarious afoot.

That would be a good place for anything that would be helpful to know ahead of time.
