Using "Reply to Group" from a digest by a Mac user
I wonder if anyone can shed any light on this problem
I have a digest user who has a Mac and using Mail, who says they cannot use "Reply to Group" from the digest They say that they cannot use "Reply to Group" "as the entire message I¡¯m replying to, disappears, and all I get is an empty email" Is this a known Mac problem? a Mail issue or something else? I know in Thunderbird if you use the Reply to Group it creates a reply and a blank email (it used to create just a blank email) -- Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) |

They say that they cannot use "Reply to Group"Sounds normal to me.? Using the reply links within the message just opens the person's email program.? If they want to quote something, they have to copy/paste. Duane -- Lots of detailed information can be found in the Owners Manual and Members Manual. |

They do not copy the current message into the editor for quoting purposes. This behavior is not unique to a Mac, nor is it specific to receiving a digest. It is a limitation of the footer links.? As I never use those links I wasn't sure if it affected all emailers Previously when I have tested using the links in the footer using Thunderbird it has opened up a blank email and hung, no subject, address or quoted text However something has changed since I tested it last, as now in Thunderbird, it creates a new mail with address & subject line but no quoted text The reason for my asking is I have a digest user, who has used reply and then deleted the <[email protected]> and entered the group address, leaving a **digest**** subject line which obviously creates a new thread, and on another occasion has replied to the wrong thread as they copied the wrong subject line I have obviously made them aware of the problem and hopefully they will adhere to my rules but wanted to make sure it wasn't another factor such as a Mac or using Mail Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 16/10/2021 14:44, Duane wrote:

Is this just a glitch (ie not copying forward the quoting text) or by design As I have said to Duane I don't use those links usually Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) Nivard -- Footer links in a group email will populate only the Subject: and To: fields of the outgoing reply. Is this just a glitch (ie not copying forward the quoting text) or by designNeither, as such. The links in the mail footer are 'mailto:<address>' constructs and the mail client (e.g. Thunderbird) doesn't have a context for that - it doesn't associate clicking the link in a mail message with the text of the mail message itself. It uses the same code path as for a mailto link from any other application on your device. This is different to clicking the Reply button in the mail client. It *would* be possible for the mailto link to include text in the message, GIO would have to add a 'body' parameter to the link; that is, a link currently would look like this: whereas it would need to look like this to have message text included: mailto:[email protected]?subject='Message?subject'&body='This is the text of the message that's being replied to'
In terms of the 'normal' email client Reply, whether or not the original message is included is an application preference setting. This from the apple support site vis. Mac mail: If you prefer to always omit the original message from your replies, choose Mail?> Preferences, click Composing, then deselect ¡°Quote the text of the original message¡±. The inference being of course that you select to include the message. Thunderbird also has the option to include or not the original message; Account Settings/Composition & Addressing/Automatically quote the original message? Both Mac and Thunderbird will include selected text from a message in a reply, same as the Groups.io Web interface.? Hope that helps! Derek in Bristol UK |

As Derek indicated, it is possible to include body text in a mailto: link, but that's usually restricted to short, canned text (See??, "adding body text"). Each message in a groups.io digest contains [typically] three separate reply links (e.g.: Reply to Group, Reply to Sender, Reply to Group and Sender). If each one also included the entire body text of its associated message, that's tantamount to sending 48 message bodies in each digest -- the original 12 messages to display, plus another 36 hidden within the reply links. Even without consideration of embedded images and so on, the additional server load and bandwidth necessary to make that happen does not justify doing this. Thank you for the explanation, it seems odd for the problem not to have been addressed before I was aware of the emailers own settings but thank you for that also Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 16/10/2021 16:34, Derek Milliner wrote:

I understand the problems now I guess most people use an email client rather than use the links Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 16/10/2021 16:47, Bruce Bowman wrote:

Nivard,
Thank you for the explanation, it seems odd for the problem not toIt has: /g/GroupManagersForum/message/19158 I remember being one of several people to confirm that different email interfaces (both webmail and clients) behave differently when a mailto: link has a body parameter. Some just ignore it, others use it but may have problems if body parameter is too long. Some even gave an error message saying that the link was malformed somehow. Thank you for your reply Perhaps I should have said not remedied as yet, rather than addressed, but I now understand why it cannot be implemented My subscriber says they are using Mail, and having tested that using Reply find it works just as Thunderbird does, I will have to ask further questions of them to see how they are trying to reply Thanks again Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 17/10/2021 02:40, Shal Farley wrote:
