Unsubscribing or Unsubscribed Members after Transfer . . .
#membership
Shal, Bruce,
How can we tell the difference between email alerts about Unsubscribing or Unsubscribed Members which tend to start proliferating right after a Transfer? That is, more specifically, to mean: 1] those who choose to Unsubsubscribe of their own volition VS 2] those who are Unsubacribed because their email is no longer valid. Is the text of those email notifications for these two different scenarios in any way different? (I cannot see a difference.) I ask because we have already received a couple hundred emails saying a member has left our group and we cannot tell for which reason. However those two kinds listed above [1,2] are not to be confused with some of the emails saying the member has likely been unsubscribed due to deleting an IO email marked as spam; those emails have a distinct text. Any light you can shed on this will be appreciated. Cheers! Paul M. CRL Owner == |
It's assumed that if a member got transferred (not bouncing on Y!), it was a valid email address, so no confirmation was needed.? If it's not and causes bouncing, that won't cause them to be unsubscribed, only an indication on their membership.? I'd say if they've unsubscribed, it was their doing.

I agree with Duane. If the email address isn't valid, it will show up as bouncing, not unsubscribed, as soon as a few messages go out. Look for a B badge in the member's list. And you'll probably get a lot of them, too.
Transferring our group was a good opportunity to purge (or self-purge) people who simply were not participating. You can try to send them new invitations, or contact them individually, if you want. But experience has shown that most of those who leave now should have unsubbed from your Yahoo group a long time ago. Bruce, Duane,
Thanx for your clarifications. That's what I needed to know. As I become more familiar with the workings of Groups.io I'll become less of a pesky questioner. I'm also on-board with not conacting/inviting the unsubscribed masses; if they want to come back they'll whine at our Mods, fer sure! Otherwise let sleeping dogs lie. Cheers! Paul M. CRL Owner == |
Paul,
I'm also on-board with not conacting/inviting the unsubscribed masses;Following up on what Bruce said, my experience has been that a fair fraction of those Y!group members who were set "No email" were people who apparently wanted to unsubscribe, but ran into either technical or confusion problems and were unsuccessful. One such, who happened not to be moderated and who hadn't posted in the Y!Group in over a decade, let forth an on-list tirade of profane anger upon receiving the notices associated with the transfer ("you've been added" and the group's Welcome notice). Lesson learned: set No Email members to Moderated before the transfer, just in case. Or else keep the entire Groups.io group moderated for the first few days after the transfer. We did have some unsubcribe right after the move though, so they probably felt like they didn't know what happened. I did make special notices ahead of and after the move, so those who had their account set to receive those got a heads up before the move. Another thing is if you discuss making the move, expect to hear all kinds of other alternatives. I politely explained that we've been through this with a few other groups, spent a year researching alternatives, and felt the move to IO was the best, especially for people who don't like change much. I also explained that if they did all their reading and posting by email, they might never know the difference between IO and Y!G. I think that allayed some fears about the move.
