Unable to transfer old Yahoo group

I am sorry to bother you, but we followed the procedure exactly. I am owner of both the Yahoo and groups.io groups.

The process was started almost TWO MONTHS AGO. We have never received a response from the [email protected] email in the Yahoo group, thru email, or anywhere else.

Yes, I see the "outage" message at /yahootransfer. What the hell does that mean?

It is possible to download Yahoo group messages as a series of text files. How are they uploaded to groups.io as part of the message database? I already managed to download the FILES section of the Yahoo group and tried to upload it to groups.io--it appears to start the process, but NEVER FINISHES. It just hangs.

Please respond to my email synth@... if possible. Thank you for your attention.

Apparently you didn't or you'd be transferred by now.? Go to /g/GroupManagersForum/message/24431 and start down the list, IN ORDER.? You won't be able to start a new transfer, if that's what's needed, until the outage at YG is over, if ever.? YG is on again, off again as far as transfers are concerned and Mark doesn't want folks to be disappointed, thus the notice.

Metasonix -- I'm not sure what you mean by this, but I'm guessing that you attempted to send an invitation to [email protected], but it did not go out. The Yahoo Groups invitation process has been finicky for years, and many people have experienced this problem, only to eventually overcome it.

First, check your status as outlined in?/g/GroupManagersForum/message/19948. What does it say in the pink box at the top of the resulting page? If it says "Be sure to invite [email protected]"?or something to that effect, that would confirm that your invitation never left Yahoo.

Some folks have had better luck after refreshing their Yahoo Group's invite page (Ctrl-F5), deleting browser cookies, logging out and back in, or trying another browser. Keep trying until the status changes to "We have received your invite and will accept it soon."

Yes, I see the "outage" message at /yahootransfer. What the hell does that mean?
It means exactly what it says...Yahoo Groups is acting up again and inhibiting the ability to get at group data. The same problems that everyone's having over there and causing people to leave is also causing difficulties for the groups.io transfer agent to do the exports.?

Until Yahoo gets their act together there isn't much anyone here can do about it; unless you know of a good way to steal data from a server that has crashed. The best you can do is try to get past this invitation problem so you're ready to give the go-ahead when/if things come back online again.

It is possible to download Yahoo group messages as a series of text files. How are they uploaded to groups.io as part of the message database?
Although we can speculate, no one here knows this for certain. We are a peer-to-peer user group...no groups.io employees here.

I already managed to download the FILES section of the Yahoo group and tried to upload it to groups.io -- it appears to start the process, but NEVER FINISHES. It just hangs.
Groups.io is not designed for cloud storage, and large uploads have a tendency to time out. You might have better luck doing this folder by folder.

Please respond to my email @Metasonix if possible. Thank you for your attention.
GMF is a forum, and public responses are preferred, so that others may benefit.?

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Just a thought, since at least one person misunderstood the
requirement to have a prepaid annual premium group fee (they signed up
for a monthly payment arrangement, which wont' work).

That person thought paying for it monthly meant the group could be
transferred. That isn't the case. You have to pay one year in advance
for a premium group before your invitation will work.

If you've already done that, then follow the advice from others given
here.

The invite to transfer my group was accepted on November 1 but nothing has happened since then. Does that mean the transfer failed? ?What can I do to ensure the transfer is done?

It means you haven't completed all the steps. See?/g/GroupManagersForum/message/24896?and be sure to do everything in order.

At that point you wait for two things:
1. The account to show up in the YG.
2. The email saying they were able to create the account at YG and are ready
to continue.

If you see the transfer account appeared at YG, you could go ahead and make
it a moderator. It only needs to be a moderator. It doesn't need any of the
extra checkboxes.

Until you get the email saying they got the account, you have to wait.
Getting YG to send the invite has been a headache for many due to the faults
at YG. Granted currently things are so messed up at YG, they are not able to
execute the transfer process to grab the content from YG. So you won't get
the green button to 'go ahead' until they see that YG is working enough to
transfer parts.

Ken -- After an entire month, I don't think continuing to wait is the answer. More likely groups.io is waiting for him to do something.

rhapsody.2120 -- It's very common for an invitation to fail to go through. Even if it has gone through, you have a couple more steps to do. And you may have difficulties promoting the transfer agent to a Moderator, depending on what privileges you have in the Yahoo group.

Check your status as described in?/g/GroupManagersForum/message/19948?. We will continue to be unable to tell you where in the process you might be stuck until this information is shared with us.

Bruce

I of course went ahead and upgraded my new group to Premium before noticing the outage message.?

Is there anything on here I can subscribe to that will push me a notification of when that outage message clears? I've got a 15k+ member group that receives announcements about developments concerning a NYT best selling author, and I'd like to get the group moved over here before the next big announcement hits. :(

You can monitor it at?/yahootransfer

If you have concerns about losing a valuable archive, you could try to do a backup of your messages and files either by using one of the techniques mentioned in the FAQ on the wiki.
This could act as a backup, just in case.
?
And make sure you are all set to go when YG starts behaving again. Make sure you are an owner or a moderator with the permission to upgrade the transfer email address to moderator in your YG site.

And your Groups.io ¡°home¡± is ready with all the right settings for your group. Write your Welcome message, etc.
Consider whether you want a subgroup, etc.?
Lots of info on the wiki.
and this on settings, notices, etc.

You're right that I can monitor it at that web address (which I already knew; that's how I knew to speak of the outage message in the first place), but that won't push me an email message when it clears. That's just a webpage I need to remember to reload repeatedly. I'm asking if there's a group or whatever that I can subscribe to that will send an email when groups.io can bring in YG again.

You could subscribe to ? That's where Mark makes the announcements about YG up/down.

Sorry, I thought you knew about Beta through our pinned post on GMF - Another YG outage -?/g/GroupManagersForum/message/25027

Never assume! Yes, join Beta and get all messages. Later, you can tweak your subscription.

Duane,

I've been monitoring the Archive Team's live progress of backing up the ENTIRE Yahoo Groups on

?
It's rather impressive.? This group has a few thousand computers activated as a massive effort to retrieve and archive all of YG.? No matter how big or small the group may be.?

As for private groups, they do 1 of 2 things, 1- request membership and then archive or 2- ask from their site for owners and mods to send an invite to the group.?

They are almost at 10% archive status by morning.

Hmm, I wonder if that's part of the reason that Mark is having so much trouble?? We all know YG isn't in the best of health and this extra load sure wouldn't help.? One thing he's mentioned that he keeps running into is the rate limiter.? Basically, it's how many times a group can be accessed in a given amount of time, so having this other site backing things up will increase the number of hits.

What's the Archive Team?

Terri

A volunteer organization.

Their home page says:?Archive Team is a loose collective of rogue archivists, programmers, writers and loudmouths dedicated to saving our digital heritage. Since 2009 this variant force of nature has caught wind of shutdowns, shutoffs, mergers, and plain old deletions - and done our best to save the history before it's lost forever.?

Wikipedia: ?

Looks like you can volunteer your computer! ?They also mention manual tasks:
"Yahoogroups-joiner Filling out captchas to archive Yahoo Groups. IRC Channel #yahoosucks (on EFnet)."

See?

Oh brother.? so Shal could have a point, they could be overloading Yahoo's servers and getting in Mark's way.? I don't know how they archive anything at this point since it's impossible to read messages.? Do we really need their help?? We're all saving our own groups.? ?If this outage is due to their "help," they're doing more harm.? I hope Yaoho can come back long enough for people to get their groups moved here.

Thanks, Frances.
