Two things I would like to do / have

Hello all -?? I have two requests for help / suggestions.

1.? I would like a format painter button: ? I don't like releasing messages sent in with a hodgepodge of colors and fonts and line spacings? -- and it is nearly impossible without a format painter to get things to look professional.?? Is there a way to do this already?? If not, is it a difficult thing to add??
  • I would prefer NOT to use the Normalize HTML setting, because I often want to highlight or emphasize a portion of a message -- and simply bolding or italics may confuse the reader because it looks like the SENDER did that.?
  • As moderator, I want to be able to say "see in particular the highlighted or colored areas.."?
  • For a while, the advanced toolbar had an option to change the color of text, but it seems to have disappeared.? What happened to it??

2.? In this time of COVID-19, I have realized that a list-serv can be a good way to START disseminating information.? But if members CANNOT forward messages, the disseminating? stops there.??
  • In our old Yahoo group, one could forward messages to others.? A lot of my group members used to do that -- they'd appoint one person to monitor the list-serv and pass along things of interest to the others.? The option of forwarding seems NOT to be possible in Groups.io.?? Why?? I do realize that enabling wholesale forwarding messages defeats the idea of a restricted group with a private conversation -- which all of mine are. But:
    • The ground rules of the groups are to "write as though your message will end up on the front page of the NY Times
    • And I get around the problem frequently myself by swooping text, then copying and pasting it -- but the format looks sucky that way and takes a lot of work to neaten up.
  • Why don't we have an option to allow members to forward messages??
  • Could we, the moderators who review all messages before posting, have the option of allowing forwarding by members when dissemination of a piece of news or an opportunity would be good.?? Is this possible?
Cordially,
Jennifer Christian

I'm told that the existing message editor is based on TinyMCE. If so, there is a Format Painter add-on available ().

I don't know what it would cost groups.io to add this functionality.

?? Is there a way to do this already?
To get rid of existing weird formatting, click the "Clear formatting" button on the advanced toolbar (screenshot below).

If you select "Normalize HTML Emails" in your settings, those toolbar icons will be unavailable. Deselect that option and they should come back.

There is nothing to keep you from forwarding group emails that you receive to other people, using your own email client. There is no function to forward messages using the groups.io web interface.

  • In our old Yahoo group, one could forward messages to others.?
I'm pretty sure this statement is untrue, except as mentioned above.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

I don't know the answer, but anyone can
forward any message they receive using
their email client software, like Outlook
and others.

I agree.
Perhaps, maybe, you were able to type an additional email in the address bar, but no longer use it (after 22 years) so no longer care.

Jennifer,

In our old Yahoo group, one could forward messages to others.
Not from the Yahoo Group's web pages anytime recently. The option disappeared ages ago (a decade or more) when Yahoo found that spammers were abusing it.

The option of forwarding seems NOT to be possible in Groups.io. Why?
I do realize that enabling wholesale forwarding messages defeats the
idea of a restricted group with a private conversation ...
That's one reason.

I thought this was discussed in the beta group ages ago and several considerations raised, including the privacy concern in groups with private archives that you noted.

However my search-fu is failing me at the moment. What I did find was a request for the feature, and an acknowledgement that it had been added to the to-do list:

Any one of your members who gets messages delivered via email can use their
email client's forward feature to forward the message along.

As to why, you mention one good reason. I can _speculate_ another: a forward
feature would mean that Groups.io would send messages to people who didn't
request them. Aside from invitations to join a group, AFAIK, Groups.io
doesn't send anything to anyone who didn't opt-in. Personally, I wish more
things worked that way.
