Strange entry in activity log
I try to keep an eye on the activity log for my group. Today I saw a message I had never noticed before.
JN-rmonroeO2AJake71-1969 <rmonroe133@xxx> changed Walt Reitz <wjreitz@xxx>'s email address from wjreitz@xxx via web And sure enough, Mr. Reitz's email address had been altered. (I maintain an off-line spreadsheet with all my group members' names, etc -- for administrative and statistical purposes. So I can see when an email address is altered.) I suppose there's an innocent explanation. Most likely JN-monroe... is the same person as Walt Reitz, and he has linked the two email addresses inside the group.io software somehow, so he has administrative permission to alter the "other guy's" address. But it looks odd. And if I run a search on the activity list for email address changes (under Actions), this item does not appear. I see dozens of other address changes, but not this one. Can anybody shed some light on this? Thanks! -- David Bryant Canyon Lake, Texas / |

That's the only way I know of that someone can change someone else's email address. I don't have a paid group to verify it though. It just happened again: Chuck McCalip <mccalip@xxx> changed Walt Reitz <wjreitz@xxx>'s email address from wjreitz@xxx via web I think I'll file a bug report. This is distinctly odd. For the record, the first incident occurred at 7:24 (CDT) this morning; the second at 4:42 this afternoon. And both of these transactions do show up in the "Moderator Activity" log. I don't know how McCalip ad Monroe can be moderators when they're not even members. Something smells fishy. ? -- David Bryant Canyon Lake, Texas / |

Something smells fishy.Ah, one other thought.? Maybe a moderator on another group (JN-monroe and McCalip) changed the email address.? On a Premium group, an owner/mod can change someone's email address.? I believe it was for those cases where members have trouble doing it, but want it changed.? Some owner/mods and members aren't aware that this will change their email address on ALL groups that person belongs to.? I'd contact Walt to see if that may have happened.? If so, it's good to know that the information is logged in all groups the person is in. Duane -- The official Groups.io user documentation is in the Groups.io Help Center. I do change an email address, from time to time, for some of my members who aren't very good about working with computers. But most of my members aren't connected with any other groups.io mailing lists. (I think moderators must be aware that a person can't change an email address without affecting all the groups to which that person belongs. There's a prominent notice to that effect on the member's "subscription" record:) Note: Changing this email address changes the email address for this person's account, affecting all of their other subscriptions. I contacted Walt Reitz, and he confirmed that he's in a Vietnam Veterans' group, and those two guys (monroe/mccalip) are moderators. That group just moved away from yahoo.com this week (yahoo discussion group support ended on Tuesday, Dec. 15), and there was some confusion surrounding the move. I'll file an amendment to the bug report I sent in on Wednesday. It looks like lazy programming, to me. It's good that the change to my member's record was logged where I can see it. But it would be less likely to engender confusion if a bit of text were altered. Something like A moderator in another discussion group changed name <address>'s email address from name@address via web would be less likely to confuse the innocent. -- David Bryant Canyon Lake, Texas / |
