staying logged in to Groups.IO

On all my subscriptions in Groups.IO, I elect to receive the first message in each thread and then no more unless I click on the link to follow. On my PC running latest Win 1803, Jaws 2019 beta 2and Chrome, the first time I do this I need to enter my groups.IO log in and password, then click on the yes button to follow the topic. From that point on each time I do this action all I need to do is click the yes button to follow. No need to enter email and password as it keeps me logged in.

Now, here is the problem. As I often use my iPhone to check mail when not by my PC I will click on a link to follow a thread and as with the PC I need to enter my email, password, then click the yes button. However, on the iPhone using Safari, it will not keep me logged into groups.IO. Each time I want to follow a topic I need to enter my email & password rather than just clicking the yes button. Any ideas on how to stay logged in so I only need to click the yes button?

?

Best,

Al

Each device may store a cookie for 30 days that shows you logged in.? You'll need to find out why Safari doesn't store the cookie needed.? I'm not real familiar with Safari, but remember that there have been a few things on Groups.io that it doesn't handle well.

I use Safari on my iPhone (iOS 12.0.1) and on my MacBook. I am able to Follow without having to log in.
I have set a password. i.e. I am not using a default password from "email me a link".
And I stay logged in on both devices.
Also no apps on my iPhone to prevent cookies.

Odd that your two devices won't play nicely with each other.

I was having the same problem.? On my ipad I never had to log in again but on my iPhone I did.? I went in and told my iPhone to remember the password and use touch id. Now every time I click on a link it takes me to my group but there is a little box that says use "my e-mail address", if i click on that, it then allows me to use touch id to log into groups io.? Not sure why it goes directly on my ipad but not my phone but at least I don't have to type in this info every time now.

Where did you tell the iPhone to remember your password and use touch id? Also, how did you get the email address to be remembered?

Bruce,

?

Thanks, read through the info but it appears it must be from an earlier version of IOS as I have 12.0.1 and the options the article presents for managing cookies are different than those I have

No worries, with a lot of tinkering around I have somehow solve the problem and now appear to be staying logged in so when I want to follow a topic all I need to do is click on that yes button in safari.

Group:
I may have started this discussion about a week ago.
Now I know how to change my password so it is easier to get logged on again.
A few days after I logged back on, I noticed that my only Yahoo group that has pictures attached now and then,
was not allowing me to see them.
A day or two later after Groups.io was good again, I noticed that that Yahoo Group once again allowing me to see the occasional attached pics.

So now I suspect a connection between Yahoo and Groups.io.
Maybe a coincidence?

Another part of the mystery is that before I was logged off, I had changed the banner photo on a Groups.io group.
Meaning I had visited the main page.
Normally, I read the group mail via my e-mail, and I suspect many of the subscribers do as well.

After changing the banner photo, I sent a special notice to the group members to visit the home page now and than to see the new pic.I would like to tell them that by doing so, they stay logged in, but that is uncertain.

Can all this mystery be solved?

Sorry about the long message, and there is a possibility that my time-line is wrong.
So I plan to record the date the banner was changed on the home page, wait 28 days and visit the home page again, then see if I get logged off. If not then the appropriate action is to visit the home page every few weeks.

Thanks for reading this far!

I suspect this was a coincidence. Various parts of Y!G seem to come and go at random these days.

Another part of the mystery is that before I was logged off, I had changed the banner photo on a Groups.io group.

Logging in starts the 30-day clock on the browser cookie. If they delete the cookie, they will find themselves logged out. If the cookie expires, they will also find themselves logged out. How many times they visit the site in the interim does not matter.

I do realize that this can be disconcerting, especially to those accustomed to being logged out for "inactivity." One time, I was in the middle of composing a message; I hit the "send" button and mysteriously found myself on the home page. It took a minute before I realized that my browser cookie had expired while I was in the message editor! Thankfully, once I logged in again the message draft was still available and ready to be sent.

So I plan to record the date the banner was changed on the home page, wait 28 days and visit the home page again, then see if I get logged off. If not then the appropriate action is to visit the home page every few weeks.
To reiterate:

-- The cookie is created by logging in.
-- It expires in 30 days, if you don't explicitly log out, or delete your browser cookies.
-- If you want to reset the cookie, you have to log in again.
-- Repeatedly visiting the site has no effect on when the cookie expires. Only by logging in again will the cookie "clock" be reset.
-- Group emails will be delivered to you whether you are logged in or not.

Hope this helps,
Bruce?

Hi Bruce, I googled the problem I am having and this old reply if yours in group managers form came up. I don’t know whether you can help me with this. A few months ago, out of the blue, I started to have to log back into my group each time I go to the website on my iPhone 6. Before this I always stayed logged in, presumably for 30 days since my previous login. Cookies are enabled in my Settings. ?Each time I log in to my group I have to agree to except cookies, but when I checked in advanced settings for Safari and search for groups io, no cookie came up. It seems as though, despite excepting cookies from groups.io, just their cookies are not getting through, because I have miles and miles and miles of cookies in my advanced settings for every other website I’ve ever been to. Do you have any idea why this could be happening??

Thanks for your consideration of my problem, whether or not you know how to fix it.

According to the Member's Manual section Logging in to your Account, each visit to the website extends the 30 day period.

Yes there is a difference between visiting the site and logging into the site

Visiting has no effect on the logging in clock but logging in resets it to 30 days

I log in every day

As long as you don't log out or delete cookies, there's no difference.? I haven't had to log in for several months.

That tells me that Safari isn't saving the cookies.? Dig around in the settings and you'll eventually find the source of the problem.

Andy -- You've quoted me out of context.

In Oct 2018, there was no such thing as a Members Manual, and simply visiting the site did not renew the login cookie.

One of my list members is having a version of this problem. ?He gets the daily summary and just clicks on links of posts he wants to read on the website. ?On his iphone he stays logged in and can go back and forth between the summary email and the list website to read posts. ?But on his new iPad, he has to relog in for each post and it is driving him crazy. ?I went through his settings as best I could remotely and all seemed set correctly, but for some reason, his groups.io password is not getting stored on his iPad. ?Any suggestions for what else to check?
