'show quoted text' vs showing quoted text

It's bad enough having members reply to posts by email with the preceding email(s) strung out below. Selective quotes are simply a much more economical way of replying. Why should anyone have to click a blue button simply to find out what message is being replied to? Chris |

GIO does it's best to find quotes at the end of a messages, then hide them, but there are so many possibilities that it can't find them all.? Of course, a top quote, like I used here, won't be hidden. Thanks Chris, I certainly agree with selective quoting, and I wish more people would use it. But when they don't, and the whole thread is quoted in the email, I think 'Show quoted text' is what should be displayed online. It's a drag to have to scroll through multiple pages to get to the next message.?

Selective quoting is not apparent to all users. Maybe figuring out how to do it depends mostly on the user's system and experience. For example, on my iPad, I don't have access to all the formatting tools that other systems display.?
Here's the process for me: I get the daily digest summary on my iPad's mail program. It has a blue link. I click on it. It takes me to a webpage (in Safari) of messages. I click the reply button below a person's post and hit "reply to group" when done. The only other option is "discard".? And then my post displays without being tied in any way to the person I replied to. I couldn't figure out how some people put the peron and quote in their reply. I don't see any "insert quote" button or option like I see in other forums.? About 2 days ago, I accidently highlighted one sentance in someone's post because my fingers had rested on the text. When I hit reply to that person,?±¹´Ç¾±±ô¨¤!?The highlighted sentence was in my reply as a quote. I didn't copy or paste it. It just happened to be highlighted when I clicked the Reply button.? Since then, I have regularly used that feature. If there were "GIO user tips on the day" I would sign up for them. I keep finding "new to me features". Still have a lot to learn.? For example, I am at the bottom of my message now and scrolling up to the top of my message there is nothing that refreshes my memory of the person I am replying to. Even though I clicked the Reply Button that was below a specific name. So I have no clue who it is because I forgot to highlight any sentance ?And it's too late to do anything other than search each person's post and then copy the sentence I am posting a reply to (which I just did). It is:? Richard Moore saying, "I certainly agree with selective quoting, and I wish more people would use it." This very post is an example of why more people don't use selective quoting. It's not intuitive. Or maybe better said, I didn't find the process to be intuitive on my iPad. -- Sandi Dickenson Moderator of ASG Volunteers Group |

The site uses responsive programming and will adjust what you can see at any time based on the size of the display.? I've found that landscape tends to show much more than portrait, including more options/tools. (I don't have a small device, but can simulate it by shrinking my browser window.) As far as selecting text to quote, that's a function of the device, not the site.? The options on the site are the speech bubble that is for "Quote Whole Post", and highlighting with the mouse before clicking reply.? A lot of the site works best with a computer and/or a large screen.? The app may improve that, but I wouldn't expect too much due to the limited real estate on small screens. So the issue is understanding the behavior of the GIO algorithms.Although we don't have all the details, we've found some evidence for certain things.? It seems the biggest factor is whether there is anything added below the quote, such as a reply or even a signature.? In that case, the quote isn't hidden.? Mark has tweaked this several times because similar logic is used for a digest where bottom quotes aren't included at all. Thanks again Duane. I started a new thread yesterday, and included a quote to help start the thread. I got the 'Show quoted text' button. In this case I didn't want that, as the quote was an integral part of my posting. What we really need, if wishes were horses, is that 'Show quoted text' shows up if and only if that text is visible earlier in the ?same thread. imho.

Here's a tip for today:Thanks! Learned a lot, as Duane said, to take full advantage I need to be on a computer. Without going into my disabilities, I'll just say the iPad in portrait mode (thumb typing) is my go device for now. Still, I'm an avid learner and look forward to spending more time eventually to dig deeper into your Wiki help. ? ? -- Sandi Dickenson Moderator of ASG Volunteers Group |
