Messages display in order of arrival (or if moderated, order of approval). To the best of my knowledge, groups.io does not attempt to build a binary tree or linked list of messages within a topic, based on message in-reply-to header information. Thus it is necessary for each reply to provide some quoted text to provide this context. I'm not convinced that Y!G ever did this, either. In any event, it sure doesn't now. If one is using Gmail from the Gmail page on line, there's a little ... symbol at the bottom. Click it adds the rest of the chain to which you're responding so that everyone can figure out what it's about!
