Questions from a new group owner

Mark Kline

I sent these questions to the developer, but he deflected them to this forum:

1) Is there any such thing as "Urgent" or "Priority" emails that go out
right away, regardless of how the users set up their subscription options?

2) Say we upgrade to a paid account now, transfer all our members and data
over from a Y!group, and then at some point in the future, there is no
longer money to maintain the paid subscription.
If at that point, we downgrade to a free account, would we lose any
existing members or data?

3) Is it true that to use the Calendar integration with Google Calendar,
the user does NOT need a groups.io login?

4) How about a Wiki? Do you need a login to view and/or edit a wiki?

Thanks,
Mark Kline

There are "Special Notices" but I cannot find an explicit statement that says they are sent to subscribers whose delivery setting is "No email".?

I don't think you would lose members because the free account is unlimited. If your data storage exceeds the 1GB limit for the free account, something has to give - either money or data. There has been discussion about "free" accounts with incremental paid storage but that is not currently an option. A strategy might be to store your photos and other big consumers elsewhere, e.g., Google Photos and Drive.

I don't know

Under Settings, there are Wiki settings that cover all or most likely permissions. You can make a wiki publicly viewable but not publicly editable.

Special Notices are not sent to members whose setting is no-email. And there's no "urgent" or "priority mail" feature.

They're not sent to those on No Email.? You do have the option to disable the No Email setting on your group though.

Just to add to this, even Special Notices are not sent out immediately for those who are using a digest or summary. If you need to send everyone a message right away you'll either have to do that through the Actions->Send Message pull-down from the Members tab, or download your member list into a spreadsheet and paste the addresses into your email client.

I also don't believe there is currently such a thing as a true Google calendar integration; meaning the ability to import calendar entries from Google into GIO. It has been requested in beta and I would dearly love to have it.

That's not correct. They are sent out immediately to everyone on Special Notice, even people subscribed via digest or summary (in addition to the digest or summary).

correction - should read, "to everyone, including people subscribed via digest or summary"
