Question about Subject lines/splitting posts
Nancy in Renton
i just read ¡°groups.io uses the titles to connect the threads¡° in a post.?
? Since I¡¯m pretty new to io groups, I¡¯ll just ask. Is this true and does that include hashtags? I¡¯m assuming it does. What about spaces? While I¡¯m at it, is there a reason to split a post? Then what happens with the subject line? Nancy |
Sort of...? The site will do it's best to keep things in the correct thread or start a new one when needed.? Something as simple as an added space in a subject line may start a new thread instead of adding to the existing one.? If this happens, you can merge the threads.? I think hashtags are typically ignored when comparing a new message to existing threads.
Splitting a thread may be useful when things go off on a tangent.? It does have limitations though, especially when replies are sent via email, so many choose not to use it.? When you select Split from the menu, it will ask you for the subject of the new thread that is being split off. Duane |
Nancy,
I couldn¡¯t see that it worked, guess I didn¡¯t understand the concept. You can split a topic - a thread of posts - but not an individual message. So no, it doesn't work as you expected. /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/How-to-Split-Threads The message you select as the "split" point, and the chain of replies already posted to it become a new topic, with the new name you give it. Unless Mark has fixed it, there's a problem with replies that are posted by email to any of the messages assigned to the new topic: those still have the original subject line. So splitting an topic while it is active can produce some frustration. Shal |

So, you¡¯re saying if a person uses one message and talks about two subjects I can use the split function, rename the second subject in the split and all replys to that second (now new) message will be tied to that subject line.
Will members be aware it¡¯s a split or do I mention in the new message that it¡¯s split off? Nancy |
No, you can't split an individual message.? You can split off a message to start a new thread.? As mentioned, anyone that replies using the original subject/title will have their replies in the original thread.? Any with the new subject would go in the new thread.? That's why splitting isn't recommended for an active topic.? Folks that only use email will tend to reply to the original which wouldn't have the new subject.
