"On this day" calendar/database?
Hi, I'm looking for some advice on the best options to provide our group with "on this day in history" facts.
?
For each day of the year we might have between four and six historic events that happened. I'd like members to get an automatic email each day with the events associated with that day, and also be able to browse through the events.
?
It seems a recurring event in calendar might work, or maybe store the events in a database? Uploading of the data is something we need to consider.
?
I'd be grateful for any advice.
Thank you Dan |
¿ªÔÆÌåÓý?Have you considered Integrations such as an RSS feed? Frances -- Help available from Groups.io help and GMF wiki. ? |
If one were to implenent such a feature, one would want to give the proposed recipients a way to disable it. I, for one, try to limit my daily incoming unsolicited (non-spam) emails to ?less than ~200. DaveD KC0WJN On Wed, Feb 26, 2025 at 09:25 Frances via <frances=[email protected]> wrote:

Frances' idea of an RSS #feed seems pretty brilliant, actually (e.g.: ). It does the stated job, and there's very little work involved.

I will acknowledge that my experience with RSS feeds - and such "news" in general - suggests that subscribers soon grow weary of them. While those who dislike them can always mute the associated hashtag(s), few will actually do so. You may need to be prepared to have subscribers start marking them as spam and getting unsubscribed. /helpcenter/faq/1/group-member-faq/q-i-got-a-message-that-i?

Thank you all for your advice. I've noted the concern about subscribing to the feed and users getting tired of it - maybe a subgroup they can subscribe / unsubscribe could be a solution? The RSS feed idea looks technically promising but I was hoping for the group to use the existing platform?without any development work being required. Dan |

If you want to provide your own nuggets of history and schedule them to be sent using existing tools, calendar events are just about your only option. And with proper use of hashtags, people will still be able to mute them. I suspect it would take some work to populate them, but that doesn't seem to be a concern on your end.?If anyone else has actually done something like this please weigh in with your experience.
