As best I can tell, default is that first post must be moderated.
Can I turn that off?
It appears I must check one of the boxes?

If you have a restricted group, you can turn it off. Yes, you must choose one of the spam control options.?

As Frances said, you can't turn that off without turning at least one other one.

Not restricted.
Then the simplest thing to do is simply approve members' messages as they arrive in Pending.

It won't take long before the most active members have all had their 1st post approved, at which point it will become increasingly rare that you have to approve another.

You don't have to do any extra work beyond that 1st approval for members that post. In many groups the majority of members "lurk" without posting, those members won't take any work at all until and unless they decide to post.
