Not getting all of my group postings

Edward Borg

Hi All;

There have been several postings sent from some of my members that never made it to my inbox. I only was able to see them by visiting the group¡¯s website. We have only posted 25 messages since we transferred out group, and out that I only received 20 of them in my inbox. That isn¡¯t such a good percentage of reliability.

I wanted to see if others are experiencing the same.

Sincerely;
Edward Borg

What else have you checked?

Fortunately Groups.io provides good tools for tracking down your delivery problems.

I wanted to see if others are experiencing the same.
I think nearly 100% reception is more typical than four out of five.

Failing to Receive [Some] Group Messages

It sometimes happens that you fail to receive some or all group messages (i.e.: via email).?Here are some things to check:

On the Groups.io side:
  • Are the missing posts listed in your account's Recent Bounces page? NO
  • Are they listed in the Email Delivery History tab of your Subscription in that group? YES
  • Were they posted to a Topic that you have muted? NO
  • Is your account in Bouncing or Bounced status? NO
  • Is your?Email Delivery?set to?Individual Messages? YES
  • Is your?Message Selection?(under Advanced Preferences) set to?All Messages? YES
  • Do the missing posts contain a hashtag that has the?No Email?property? NO
  • Do the missing posts contain a hashtag that you have muted? NO
On your email interface:
  • Have you set a filter that blocks or redirects some (or all) group messages? NO
  • Are the group messages landing in your Spam?(or Trash or other junk)?folder? NO
  • If you're using an email client on a PC or mobile device, have you checked the spam folder of your service's Webmail interface? YES

I don't get these messages in both my desktop PC or my mobile phone!
I have had similar problems with Yahoo groups not delivering all my group's postings.

Sincerely;
Edward Borg

Edward,

Are they listed in the Email Delivery History tab of your Subscription in that group? YES

In which section are they listed?

If in the Most Recent Successful Delivery section that's the end of the story as far as Groups.io is concerned. Your email service accepted delivery, what they did with the message from there you'll have to discuss with them.

If in the Most Recent Unsuccessful Attempt section that's indicitave of greylisting. The affected message(s) should eventually either be delivered or be rejected ("bounced") depending on how Groups.io's retries interact with your email service's greylisting procedures.

I have had similar problems with Yahoo groups not delivering all my group's postings.

This indicates that your email service isn't very keen on delivering email list traffic to you. I recommend choosing a better service.

Many years ago (in the DSL days) I switched from Verizon to a cable service as my ISP. In part because of the price/speed benefit, but also in part because Verizon would swallow some of my Y!Group messages and I couldn't get any satisfaction from their technical support. That's my rant.

In Apple Mail, for example, if the Sent version of a message you posted ends up in the same folder with the distributed version of that posting, then Mail will sometimes only display one of them. If it displays the one you Sent, then it appears that the distributed version never arrived. In the case of Apple Mail the solution is to keep the Sent message in the Sent folder and the distributed message in your Inbox. Then both are available, the distributed one having group.io headers.?

Richard,

In Apple Mail, for example, if the Sent version of a message you
posted ends up in the same folder with the distributed version of that
posting, then Mail will sometimes only display one of them.
Interesting.

Gmail has a similar but more annoying "feature". It will hide the distributed version from your Inbox even if the sent version is in your account's Sent folder (or, I suspect, anywhere).

Gmail's "feature" is based on matching the Message-ID field in the message header. Groups.io has a compensating feature to correct for this behavior: when a message you posted from Gmail is sent back to your Gmail address, Groups.io replaces the Message-ID field in the copy distributed to you (but not anyone else).

If you are a Gmail user and don't like seeing your distributed copy back in your Inbox you can turn the feature off by unchecking the (misleadingly named) "I always want copies of my own emails" box at the bottom of your Account Preferences page.

I mention all of this because perhaps Apple Mail uses the same technique (matching Message-Id) to detect when the Sent version is in the same folder as the Distributed version. If so, and you'd like to work around that Apple Mail feature, you could suggest that the Groups.io feature be extended to Apple Mail.
