No introductory message with subscription applications?

I'm getting subscription applications from folk I can't ID from the email address. In the Yahoo group that this io group spawned from I used to get a quick 'Hi, I'm so and so and do so and so....' as they were prompted for a short message before pressing the join button. There doesn't appear to be similar on io, you just press join and a sterile notification appears in my inbox. Can't see anything in settings, have I missed anything?

Stew

You're not missing anything.? There is a somewhat current thread about this on beta that you may want to join to express your wishes,

All of the groups I manage are for Amateur radio ( aka Ham radio).? It would be nice to include a simple question that they could answer and provide the reply to us in the application message.

If you are a ham radio operator, please provide your call _______ or a short note about why you would like to join our group ____________________________________.

That is all we need to see,? Other groups might like to ask a different question.?

We set up our group as restricted but since we have a website also when someone attempts to ask to join they receive a custom message the gives them th link to our join request form and it's up to them to complete from there..? Once we get the form submission, we review and if ok, approve them.
You could tell someone trying to join that they must send a message to the owners with certain required info for entry to the group.
If they don't comply, you did the best you could.? If they comply you can let them in however you do that.
Since we are a premium group we just direct ingest them and they get another? email with appropriate instructions and a link to the wiki

Indeed there is, and the process appears to be very simple; just set up a "Pending Subscription" message in the Admin section. (Admin - Settings - Member Notices)

Mark also put a very helpful post in the above thread; see which nicely explains the relevant sequence of events following a membership request. The Group for which I am a Moderator is in the process of setting this up; at the moment we are just tinkering with the content! Up to now we have been doing it manually, which is a chore.

Regards,

Chris

Expanding on Bob's idea...perhaps allow an attachment to the Pending Subscription message, which could be used to send a PDF fill-in form that you've previously uploaded to the group? The new subscriber would then fill that out and send it back.

Generally speaking you wouldn't want to allow public access to the files area of a restricted group, but if you can send one file as an attachment it would obviate that problem.

Just a thought,
Bruce

Good god, things are problematic enough with that message and the whole pending subscription process. I'm shielding my eyes ....

Quite so. I can't see why a properly written Pending Subscription message to which the applicant has to reply (no reply then no membership!) wouldn't be sufficient.

There is also another live thread about GDPR on this forum; while it is mainly of relevance to data protectionin Europe if a Europe - based Group were to collect all sorts of information about applicants in a complex authorisation process then that Group itself would have to be GDPR compliant. That said I can see that depending on a Group's raison d'etre there might be a need for something a little more than "I am interested in joining because..." but I can see no merit in introducing layers of complexity without an extremely good reason.

I agree. Trying to propose a new system feature that doesn't require lots of system programming (like an online questionnaire would).

The way I see it, the ongoing problem with email subscribers and lack of moderator notification is a bug, not a feature.?

No, you don't have to wait and you don't have to send it by hand. Create a Pending Subscription notice (Settings --> Member Notices ---> Create new notice ---> select type "Pending Subscription") and check the "active" box. Include your questionnaire in the notice. The notice goes out automatically (once they have confirmed their email address with groups.io).?
