New member: question about Group owner email address
Michael,
? The email message is forwarded to the email address of each moderator and owner, subject to the Owner Email setting in that mod/owner's Subscription page. Each mod/owner can elect to receive all such emails, none of them, or only those sent by current subscribers to the group. The message is also logged in the group's Activity log (Message to +owner) and in the member's Activity History page. Michael,
? No, they are not put into the group's Messages section, nor sent to ordinary members. But the content is sometimes available (to mods/owners) through a link in the Activity log. I've forgotten at the moment if there's a reason that is "sometimes" rather than always or never. Michael,
I'm owner and chief moderator for a 750-member group with a total of five moderators.? We draw up an annual schedule and each moderator takes a shift of two weeks or a month at a time--so we have a "duty moderator" and a backup on duty at all times.? That means each moderator has about 10 weeks on duty as moderator and another 10 as backup, not at all burdensome. To keep group management simple, we created a single Gmail account for all five moderators to use.? For example, if our group were named ABC the email address would be ABCmoderator@....? About 99% of our moderator work is done using that Gmail account, and that means any time there's a question about what was/was not done by another moderator, the duty moderator can look back at past emails and sort out exactly what happened with only occasional need to ask other moderators for help.? Having that Gmail?account for our multi-moderator group has simplified our?moderator lives and has been a godsend. KISS (keep it simple, stupid!) works great for us! Milt Baker P.S.? I added a group_management hashtag to this post hoping other moderators will pass along useful group management tips.? As this forum shows, there's a lot we moderators can learn from one another. |

I kinda like this idea for Moderator activities, though (i.e.: managing messages and subscriptions). It would indeed help avoid duplication of effort.? ? Please reframe or restate it and I'll try to answer.? What do you mean by "the system provided by Groups.io"?Sorry for the delay in responding; we have been out. I wouldn't have commented at all had you not added the line about the KISS Principle. Given that the notifications to Moderators that exist within the Groups.io system, and the ability to examine Moderator activity via the Activity Log I simply don't see what benefits having another "Moderators' email address" confers on the Owner & Moderators. I agree with Bruce about having suitable mechanisms for "disaster recovery", but as far as I can see the two concepts aren't connected. My views may, of course, be affected by having to deal with Group Members who have more than one account (something we try to discourage for other reasons) and then get themselves into a tangle when they try to use one membership by logging into the other and the like, or try to edit the Display Name on one account and finish up changing the other and so on.
