Is there a full email history?

Dan Hartford

Hi,

As a moderator, If I look at a member through the members list and select the "Email Delivery History" tab, is there a way to see more than just the most recent good and bad deliveries?? Maybe going back a period of time or a number of entries in each category.??

Thanks -- Dan

No.? Since each member can turn delivery off and on at will, there would be no good way to keep up with it.

I can't speak to how far back the delivery history goes. I will say that the tab you're talking about is supposed to deal with exactly what it says -- bouncing emails, and issues associated with message delivery, not group moderation.

Instead, find any subscriber's post and click on the More menu. At that point you can view "all posts by this member" and perhaps obtain information that will be more useful for purposes of group moderation.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Under the ADMIN tab, select ACTIVITY and enter identifying info for the user and you should see info going back to "day one," with day one being the day the group was created or the day it was transfered from elsewhere.

Let me clarify my concern.?

A member contacted me the other day and indicated that they hadn't gotten some emails that other members had.? This member is set to Individual emails and has not changed that setting since joining the group.? So, having just had some members (Hotmail in those cases, but not this one) not get emails due to their service provider, I wanted to see which emails this member had actually been sent.? I had recalled seeing the "Email History" tab so went there hoping to see a list of emails sent to this user and thus to see if Groups.Iohad actually sent the emails in question.? If so then the problem must be down stream.? If not, then the problem could be the member muting a topic or muting a hashtag or some other problem within Groups.IO.? But as other messages had been sent since the one's in question and the display only shows the latest I was unable to verify that Groups.IO actually did? (or did not) send the messages in question.??

This seemed odd to me, as the title of the tab I was looking at is "Email History" which strongly suggests, well, a history of emails sent to and bounced for that member - not just the last one.? I think it would be quite useful for this history to show more than just the last one.? Maybe the last 30 messages, or the last 30 days on a rolling basis similar to the black box recorder in airplanes that keeps a rolling record of the last 15 minutes (not sure of the number) worth of info.

Thanks -- Dan

I agree that the way the email delivery history is displayed is rather unsatisfactory.

For what it's worth, I can reliably see actual bounces going back 60 days or more. But without a corresponding number of successful deliveries it's hard to put that into any kind of context. I also don't fully understand what an "unsuccessful attempt" means. My guess is that such messages may be queued up for redelivery, but that's just speculation on my part.

Dan,

I had recalled seeing the "Email History" tab so went there hoping to
see a list of emails sent to this user and thus to see if Groups.Iohad
actually sent the emails in question.
Absent the member's use of Mute, or Following Only, it is safe to assume that Groups.io had attempted delivery of every message. Those that were unsuccessful would (eventually) show up in the Bounces list (they may not list there until all retries have been exhausted).

This seemed odd to me, as the title of the tab I was looking at is
"Email History" which strongly suggests, well, a history of emails
sent to and bounced for that member - not just the last one.
I agree with that, but I wonder if it wasn't done for the "most recents" because managing a list of them would add overhead to each and every outbound email message. That's a lot of messages! Having only the most recent reduces that overhead to just storing a pointer to the result in a known location.

I'm not saying that's the actual reason, but it wouldn't surprise me. On the other hand, given all the other processing that occurs for each and every outbound message, maybe the list management wouldn't amount to a noticeable burden.
