iPhone

A friend helping me test things out tells me that he's being asked to log in again every time he responds to a post when using his iPhone. Any advice? Thanks.

I know this may be a stupid question but can you confirm that your friend is attempting to reply by email rather than via the web UI?

If the former then I have no idea what is happening; if the latter then this sounds "normal".

Chris, pretty sure it's the latter as you surmise. But why is this normal on the iPhone, to require a new login every time? I'm responding through the Web UI right now on my desktop, and it didn't ask me to log in again. Thanks.

Ah... I'm not saying it's "normal", not least because I am not an iPhone (or any other type of smartfone) owner.

To get to the bottom of this I think you have to find out exactly what your associate sees at every step of the process, and what they are doing.at every step.?

Let's look at a few possibilities:

  • "Other person" receives test post by email, and tries to reply by email. That should work without any need to log in at all. However, the reply must be from the email address that is registered as belonging to that Groups.io subscriber. (Which is not the same thing as a "group member")

  • "O/P reads test post on the web UI, and tries to reply via web UI. This raises another issue; if the group settings allow non - members to read posts without being logged in, then it might be all too easy to forget that this is a "read only" function and that a reply by web UI requires the device in use to be logged in. MIght be worth checking this.

  • Having logged in and replied, is the "O/P" logging out again, or just closing Groups.io, or perhaps neither?? If logging out then another reply will require a new log in. If the O/P is simply closing Groups.io then the logged - in status should be maintained by cookie, unless for some reason the iPhone isn't storing them. (As stated above I'm not an iPhone owner so I don't know if this could happen.) If "neither" then I am at a loss to understand what is happening.

I think you will have to pin the other person down for more detail about exactly what is seen and done; without that you and the rest of us are just guessing really, and (hopefully!) intelliigent guesswork has its limits.

Some browsers on mobile devices will delete cookies by default. It's a security feature in case it gets lost or stolen. If your subscriber finds this objectionable, he will have to find some way to disable it. For Safari, see??

Hope this helps,
Bruce
