Identifying a Premium list

I own and belong to several Basic lists.? With the recent changes many recently transferred lists that would have been free a year ago are now Premium lists.? Some Basic lists are well over
500 members and could become Premium lists in the future (I remember that change was temporarily rescinded).

? One Basic list is using 3.2 GBs for attachment storage of images?instead of the Photos?storage ( only 229 MBs).?
I thought when you used that much storage the attachments would be deleted automatically or you had to upgrade to Premium.??
I got this question from a list subscriber when our image storage was approaching 1 GB and we discussed whether to upgrade to Premium.

How can I tell if a list is Basic or Premium as a subscriber?? Or are attachment image storage not included under the 1GB max, a loophole allowing larger image storage.

Ken -- Old attachments are only deleted automatically if you have it set up that way (Admin>Settings>Message Policies>Out of Space). And to be honest, I'm not even sure that works correctly.

The main "symptom" of being over quota is the inability to upload additional photos or files to those respective storage areas.

As a mere Subscriber, I don't believe that you can. Checking that requires access to the Billing functions.

Attachment storage is included in the 1 GB max. But frankly, I've seen no clear indication that groups.io checks the size of incoming attachments against a group's storage allocation as they arrive, despite the existence of a setting that suggests it should be happening.?

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Is this a group that has recently migrated from Yahoo, "recently" being defined since transfers had to be paid for.

If so it has the advantage of being Premium for a year, hence the generous amount of storage. I must say that 3.2 GB of attachments does sound rather a lot...?

I can't say for sure if a subscriber can differentiate between Basic / Premium / Enterprise other than by perhaps noticing how much of the allowable storage has been used up but I suspect not; others may know better!?

Bruce - this worries me. We're a premium group following migrating from yahoo, but going back to basic at the end of a year. Are you suggesting that the "delete old attachments" option may not actually do that??

Does anyone have any experience, positive or negative, with that option?

The pricing page from Groups.io says:

What Happens If I Go Over My Storage Limits?
We send you a warning when you've reached 80% of your storage limit. You can configure your group to either bounce messages when you've reached your storage limit, or to automatically delete old attachments to keep you under the storage limit. Photos and files are never automatically deleted.

Source:?/static/pricing

And messages themselves don't count towards your storage.

How about a feature like Direct Add. It is visible in your admin panel, in Invite.
Since I don't have access to Admin for a premium or enterprise group, I can't see it. But it is in the wiki -?

Trouble is that feature doesn't seem to be working, and IIRC Mark acknowledged that fact at some point.

Sorry, I see in the original post of this thread, Ken asked "How can I tell if a list is Basic or Premium as a subscriber?" And a subscriber can't see the Direct Add feature.

Neither will a subscriber see a warning email to the effect that 80% of the storage limit has been reached.

Okay, the answer I hope!

See?/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Managing-Attachments%2C-Files-and-Photos

"The second method is available to all subscribers on a group.

Using the Tabs as above select Files or Photos. Towards the bottom of the either page there are details of the storage occupied by Files or Photos, depending on the Tab selected. On the Photos page there is also a figure of storage used by Attachments which share space with Photos. An example from a "Photos" section is shown below."

No this is a group created back in 2017 and then closed their YG site Christmas of 2017 after the list transferred.
Evidently they have not enabled the option to delete old attachments if they exceed the 1 GB storage limit, so they are allowed to exceed the 1 GB max image storage limit without
having to convert to a Premium list.? Members of that group are complaining on a list I just transferred that for the new list the photos are stored in Photo albums which limits the
image storage capacity to 1GB while if the images are attachments there is not practical limit.

? I'm not sure after downsizing 3 GB of images stored in YG photos in order to transfer images and fit?under the 1GB image limit, that I want to tell subscribers that it the images had instead been
stored as attachments they wouldn't have needed to be downsized.? Maybe I'll tell them that after the YG lists transfers end in December; this loophole will be closed.

Edited

Evidently bouncing messages or deleting images when 1 GB image storage is reached does not actually happen.? 3.2 GB of image storage is way, way over the 1GB limit and
the list is not bouncing messages, deleting old attachments, or preventing storing of message attachment images, image storage just keeps growing and growing.

Frances,
? That is where I saw that attachments had 3.2 GB of image storage, but as far as I know it is a Basic (Free) list created in 2017.
That list owner has been complaining that a new list I created has an image storage limit because I limit attachment size and image size
while his list does not because most all their images are attachments to messages.? Maybe he actually now has a Premium list and his
image limit is now 10GB, but he hasn't admitted to that it isn't a Basic (Free) list.??

Perhaps the list type, Basic, Premium, Enterprise; should be listed on the Home Page and in the groups directory.? And avoid jumping
to conclusions.

Limiting attachment and image sizes is not the same as having a storage limit; reducing sizes simply means that you can get more individual items into the available space; his complaint sounds a bit like a complaint for the sake of complaining. It's your group and the settings are for you to determine.

Pedant Mode: it's a storage limit rather than a image limit.

Have you actually asked him about the status of the group in question? If so has he declined to answer?

Applying the concept of Occam's Razor points towards it being a Premium Group rather than a weird malfunction of Groups.io, at least in the absence of any accurate knowledge of the type of group it is.

Something like this was suggested, discussed, and discarded a couple of years ago,
