I and the moderators ARE NOT HAPPY WITH IO GROUPS. Please read and help!
1) THE FAILURE of "ANNOUNCEMENT GROUP ONLY" TO STOP ALL POSTS FOR TWO DAYS TO GIVE MODERATORS THEIR WEEKLY BREAK: Yesterday, in the middle of the two day moderator/admin break, I found out about setting the group to Announcement Group only to stop posts. YET six posts have appeared this morning BEFORE I undid the Announcement group only. Why?? 2) BEING UNABLE TO GIVE A MODERATOR/ADMIN THE POWER TO CLOSE POSTINGS FOR TWO DAYS: ?It looks like I, as owner, am the only one who can make it an Announcement group only on one evening, then I, as owner, am the only one who can undo the Announcement only designation (if it only worked!!). ?Where can I give this ability to one of my moderators as was done in the Yahoo group? (and why didn't it work in the first place?) 3) A MODERATOR/ADMIN BEING U|NABLE TO SEE THE THREE QUESTIONS WE HAVE SET UP FOR NEW MEMBER REQUESTS: ? I get emails showing the answers to the three questions. Yet I have a moderator designated to approve members as she did in the Yahoo group. Am I, as owner, forced to be the only one to see the answers to these questions? ?Thus, I'm also forced to forward them to my moderator who was always the one to approve members in the Yahoo group? |

Janie -- First, you need to relax and take a deep breath. The sky is not falling. 1) Did you save the setting? If you don't click "Update Group" at the bottom of the page after making the change, you did not make the change. 2) Is it your Moderators that are doing the posting? Setting the group to Announcement still allows Moderators to post. 3) Do you have any of these subscribers on a posting override? Everyone should be set at the Group Default. If this still doesn't meet with your satisfaction -- and you have a Premium group -- you can halt all group activity for however long you wish by clicking the "Lock Group" button at the bottom of the Settings page. You can delegate this responsibility to a Moderator by giving him/her the "Modify Group Settings" permission. Or simply make someone else a co-owner, which you really should consider doing anyway. Change his/her Owner Email setting to "All Emails." Bruce |
The moderator that approves members is set to receive messages. i.e. this below, yet she doesn't get them.? |

You should always include as much detail as you can about the group settings and anything else that may impact the situation.? It seems that about 99% of the time, problems are solved when people look at what they've done and realize they made a mistake.? The other 1% are bugs or misunderstanding of how things work on GIO. Hi Bruce. I never thought the sky was falling. lol. It's just been frustrating for all the mods and myself.? For the Announcement only, I'll pay close attention to whether I'm saving it next weekend.? QUESTIONS:? 1) Are you saying that I can also "Lock group" as an alternative to Announcement only? I'm assuming that means the moderators can't post either, which is fine. They just want the break. But will I as?owner still be able to post during the?two day break with Lock group? 2) If I give a moderator the ability to "modify group settings", that sure does give someone a lot of power. ?Is there a setting where I can be notified if any of the settings are changed? 3) As far as making another mod a co-owner...would they have the power to remove me as owner? I remember that?happening in a few facebook groups. Could that happen in the IO groups?? That is the last thing I'd want to happen. I've owned this group for 17 years.? 4) My moderator who is not getting?any of the emails (that have answers to all 3 questions) is already set to All Emails. I?already asked her to check spam. She's getting nothing. Sure need help with that.? |

The subject line led me to believe you were upset. If both you and your Moderators are truly unhappy with groups.io then other options are available. There is no function in groups.io that will allow the group Owner to post while inhibiting posts by Moderators. No. You would have to check the Activity Log for that. Yes.? These last three questions suggest that to want to spread the work around but aren't willing to trust anybody. You can't have it both ways. Check her Email Delivery History (button at the top of her member record). Hope this helps, Bruce |

This is not the same thing. Click open her member record. As a Moderator, she should have an Owner Email block. Make sure it's set as shown (screenshot below). If this block is not present, she is not a Moderator. Bruce |
Hi Bruce. I think there's a misunderstanding. We didn't want to leave IO groups--it's why I put help at the end. It was wanting help for what was frustrating. Yes, what you posted and the pic with All Emails under the same heading is?what has always set for her. It's so odd that she's not getting the owner emails with the questions answered.? But I'm confused about your next part and need your help on that. You stated this moderator should have an Owner Email block. A block? I'm very confused by that, as a block would mean she wouldn't get the owner emails (thus wouldn't see the answers to the three questions). ?Isn't an Owner Email block the opposite of having All Emails checked under Owner Email? Appreciate any clarification you can give me. |

On the resulting page, there are some basic identifiers, then a series of blocks:? Email Delivery, Signature, Advanced Preferences, and Posting Privileges. Only if you are a Moderator or an Owner will the following additional blocks show up: Notifications and Owner Email. Bruce |
Janie,
Now a lot of those 22,000 were not moderated in the Yahoo group. IsIf a member's Posting Privileges in the Yahoo Group was "Override - posts are not moderated" then that was copied to "Override: not moderated" in their Groups.io membership. /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Message-Moderation#Member-Controls You'll be able to spot them in the Members list: they'll have a "P" badge after their email address. /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Status-Badges-in-the-Members-List I'm just going to hope that if I change the group to Announcement onlyAs Bruce said, you and all group owners and moderators will still be able to post. I'm uncertain about members with the "P" privilege, but I would think not. I already asked her to check spam. She's getting nothing. Sure needAs Bruce said, check for information in the Email Delivery History tab of her page in the Members (or Moderators) list. As far as my moderator who approves members not getting the owner emails to see answered questions....SUCCESS! Something changed as of yesterday. She is now suddenly getting the owner emails to see who answered the questions. ?Maybe there was a bug that is now fixed.? So when it's time for the two-day moderator break coming up this weekend, and the need to turn off member posts,?we'll do the Announcement Only setting, but pay attention to the bottom of the page and Updating the page. I appreciate? As far as a moderator opening and closing the group for the break, I'll look for "Modify Group Settings" permission for that moderator to be able to open and close. I appreciate that tip.? ? |

I appreciate that tip.?It seems reasonable to conclude that you and your moderators are still very much feeling your way around Groups.io. On that basis can I suggest that you have a look at the various permissions that you have set up and check that you have not given any moderator the Set Moderator Privileges Permission. It may sound innocent enough but with that permission a moderator can promote themselves to "Owner" and revert you to being an ordinary member or even ban you. I am not saying that any of your moderators might be minded to take any such action but with everyone still unfamiliar with Groups.io's workings it's the sort of thing that could happen almost by accident with the perpetrator not realising they had done it and thus not being able to put things right again. Were it to happen, getting normality restored would be tricky, and it's "better to be safe than sorry"... Chris |
Janie,
So when it's time for the two-day moderator break coming up thisThat will reject members' messages back to them. In some email interfaces such rejections can be very confusing or misleading. Another option would be to check the "Moderated" box. Then the messages would simply be held in the Pending list. You, and your mods, could turn off your notification and just ignore the piled up messages until Monday. At which point you can delete or approve them, at your choice.
