How to Effect a Transfer (was: create subgroup with transfer)

How do I transfer to let members know about the new group besides a simple post? Sorry, I mean is there a way to transfer over 10,000 members in one swoop or do they all have to join on their own?
Unfortunately, you cannot download a list of all 10,000 members...Yahoo won't let you. So you are left with using the groups.io transfer mechanism or...yes...asking everyone to abandon the old group and resubscribe to the new one.

There's also the question of whether your message archive, files and photos have any meaning to you, and if you're willing to pay $110 to have them moved. Can your subscribers afford to pitch in a penny apiece? :-) If so, this might be a better option. There are many transfer resources that explain the process. You can read about it here, here and here. In fact there are so many resources that many people come away even more confused. The bottom line is that if you can scratch the money together we are here to help walk you through it. If you can't, then your best bet may just be to abandon the "stuff" from the old group and start afresh.

Assuming you decide not to muddle through an actual transfer, you should find the +subscribe email address for your group [among some others] at the bottom of your group's home page. The easiest way to tell people how to subscribe is to simply have them send a subscription email to that address from their preferred email account.?It doesn't matter what the message says...it can even be empty. You can instead have them visit your group home page and click the Join This Group button located there...but for some reason sending the subscription email seems to leave folks less confused.

The good news is that your active members probably WILL follow your instructions and WILL bother to migrate on their own. In fact, I found that the migration to groups.io was a great way to clean out all the deadwood. I can't speak for every group owner, but I'd rather have a dozen subscribers who actually participate than 1000 lurkers.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

There are a few other third-party solutions to that, including PG Offline, a chrome browser app, and ModTools.
I tried following the directions on the Chrome extension and the
directions seem to be way outdated. I tried to guess what it meant
since the menus on the current Chrome version are different and got
lost.

PG Offline isn't able to sign in for me right now. I do have Yahoo set
to allow less secure applications to access Yahoo and don't have
2-step verification on. It might just be that Yahoo is overwhelmed
right now with people trying to grab their content. I can sign in with
the same credentials on their main site. I was hoping for a
work-around for now until things calm down.

Donald:

The Chrome applications that Mark Fletcher wrote for downloading Yahoo! Groups members and messages still work in the current version of Chrome. I used both of them successfully today. Here are the steps I used up to the point that I opened the Yahoo members download app in Chrome. From that point on the built-in directions are clear. You can use the same basic steps for the Yahoo messages download app.

? 1. Open Chrome and go to the page.

? 2. Follow the instructions to "download the Zip file YahooMembersApplication.zip, then create a directory for it, then copy the Zip file contents to the directory." Skip the rest of those instructions.

? 3. In Chrome, in the far upper-right corner, click on the three vertical dots.

? 4. Hover the cursor over More Tools and select Extensions.

? 5. Be sure the Developer mode in the upper right corner is toggled ON.

? 6. In the upper left, click on Load unpacked.

? 7. Navigate to the directory/folder where you copied the contents of the unZipped file and click on Select. Yahoo Group Members Import0.4 should be displayed under Chrome Apps.

? 8. Open a new tab and click on Apps (far left on the Bookmarks Bar).

? 9. Click on the Yahoo Group Member ... app and the Yahoo Group Members Import page should open.

10. Follow the instructions on that page. Be sure you are signed in to Yahoo!.

I hope this works for you,

Robert

Robert....

I am not sure that I follow the above.? I want to do one thing.? I want to save 11 years worth of emails from my yahoo group. Will the The Chrome applications that Mark Fletcher wrote do this for me?? What kind of file format will all the emails be in??

I am not interested in down loading a list of members.? I want to down load all the email on the forum.

Is this a tool that will do that?? Are other tools available?

Thank you,

jack

Someone in this thread asked how to save (export?) the messages in a yahoogroup..... If I understood the question correctly.
?
There¡¯s a utility
????? PG offline 4????????
that does that.
?
Works very well. I have used it to export and archive tens of thousands of posts from my yahoogroups.
?
I also has excellent search and sort and tally abilities for analyzing those old messages.
