How to collect donations from members to support cost of forum

I am moving a Yahoo group to groups.io which charges $220/year. The forum members have expressed willingness to support the move financially. I see a donation button which I tried activating but got lost in forming an LLC - which I do not want to do.? I just want a simple donation collection box. Is there a simple way to do that?

Hi

I can't test this, because I don't have a premium account but look in Admin, Activity, Payment Activity.
Groups.io uses Stripe to collect donations. (A moderator says that is also the system that Groups.io uses to collect Premium upgrade costs so you will have seen the interface users will see.)
There are several recent messages if you search in this group for stripe.

This is interesting.

Can donations done this way be targeted to support particular Groups?
Could a number of donors send a few dollars each to support some particular group?

Thanks,

-John

John -- Yes. In fact, that's pretty much all you can do with it.

This is a Premium-only feature. And no, you cannot redirect donations to groups.io in order to pay for Premium. You have to upgrade first.

More info at?. Please note that groups.io's percentage is now 5%, not 20%.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Thank you.

Suppose one has several Premium groups, obviously already paid for.
Then apparently you can solicit contributions.

But, can donors specify which group the donation is to support or does it all go into one pot?

You donate on the group's page. It is for the group. Groups.io does take a small cut. A percent or two. (Stripe takes a percent or two from Groups.io as well.)

Donors will be donating to the group where they use the Donations page/link.? I suspect all of the donations would go into 'one pot' unless you create a Stripe account for each group.? Hopefully, the Stripe account would specify which group it came from.

An alternative Paypal option if you don't wish to use the built-in. You can create a PayPal.me identity (but be careful, you get one shot at the name and it can't be changed later). A link to that can be placed on the site (I'd suggest on a Wiki page).?

Probably less traceable than the built-in but usable.

Derek:
That's what we did for my ControlledVocabulary group. I've been using Paypal for years, but didn't realize you can log in and then go to https://paypal.me/? to create a link.?

I put this on a link on the main site on the forum page during the transition, but then took it down.?

The end result will look like this, with the [nameyoucreate] being the name you type in the Paypal.me setup.?

https://paypal.me/[nameyoucreate]/20.00USD?
You have to specify a default amount, but the person using the link can change the dollar amount after arriving on the page.?

BTW, I tried putting that into the "description" of the home page (under the general section after going to ADMIN >> SETTINGS), and it shows in the main home page for my group (see example at):
/g/ControlledVocabulary
Note you do have to use the "insert link" feature in the toolbar to make it active.? For those without a separate website, you could also put this link into that section in "General" part (Just below the Description).?

HTH,
David
