How do I set up a periodic message to a group?

On Yahoo I was able to send out a message automatically every month. I
don't see how to do this on groups.io but surely this must be a
feature?

Hi,
One way (and this seems to be the most common one) is to create a periodic
event in Calendar that specifies messages to be sent (as the body of the
appointment) on a regular basis.
Cheers,
Joseph

In Groups.io you would do this with a repeating event in the calendar. Much more flexible delivery schedule than the scheduled files approach of Yahoo Groups.

The key feature missing from that is that you can't attach a file to the event reminder. On the other hand, you can write its body with the same WSYWYG editor as message bodies, so if the file would be just readable text you may not need to use an attached file.

I believe the Gio equivalent is to put your message into a repeating
calendar event. Maybe hashtag #admin to set it apart.

Shal,
Since message delivery is part of a calendar is there (somewhere) a list or, better yet a matrix of exactly who would receive calendar event notifications?
e.g., would it go to
  1. all members,
  2. all except No Email,
  3. all except Special notice
  4. all except 2 & 3
BTW the same question stands for Special Notices.

Thanks everyone for the place to go for the repeating announcement. I
had never thought of the calendar as we've never used it in YG!.

I'll look into this another day as I sent out the message manually in
two of our groups.

Event reminders post as ordinary messages, so they would go to all except those on special notices and no email. Members on Digest would see them in the digest.

Event reminders have a default (system supplied) hashtag: #cal-reminder. You can add your own hashtags to their Subject to modify delivery (or other behavior), just like messages.

BTW the same question stands for Special Notices.
All except No Email.

Shal,

This sounds good, except for not being able to attach a file. As described above though could one not simply include
a LINK to the file they otherwise would have wanted to send via the calendar? I haven't checked out all the calendar
functions so this is only conjecture on my part, but it would seem to be a simple work-around if URLs are permitted.

Failing that, would the calender functions allow including a linked word or phrase to serve the same purpose as a link?
(This may be a moot suggestion if text only is all that is allowed in calendar messages.)

Just thinking ahead for how to send out our monthly reminders after we migrate our Yahoo Group to Groups.io.

FYI. Attachments in event reminders are on the TODO list (and have been for about 2 1/2 years ;>)

Thanks Shal,?
So I set a hashtag in each event(series) of (hashtg)Special to force the event to go to Special Notices only members, right?

We were the ones who asked Mark to make NoEmail a group option setting. ?
There are too many of our members who are dead heads and only look when they are in trouble with their vision.
Special Notices is a way to remind ?them of other opportunities for information like our free literature and presentation on DVD.

Sure, you can put a link in the event's Description.

The question then is where you host the file. If it is in the group's Files section then members must be logged in to access the file.

I haven't tested it, but I think that's right.

If you would want all calendar events to go as special notices I think you could set that attribute on the #cal-reminder hashtag. But you may not see that one in your hashtag list until after the first reminder has been sent (system default hashtags don't show up in the list until they have been used once).

If you'd rather be more selective you can create a hashtag with any name you please, and put the special notice attribute on it. Then add that hashtag to the Event field (subject) of "special" events.
