Help: Earthlink now bouncing emails sent to *me* from Groups.io groups I own
Folks: As of two days ago (Wed 2/27/19), I am no longer getting emails from my groups that are supposed to send me each email. Apparently, Earthlink is now bouncing emails sent to me, from the Groups for which I'm an admin. |

I agree with Bruce that this is likely a broader issue, and it will take either a lot of Earthlink users sending such messages, or perhaps Mark's intervention, for Earthlink to get wise to the fact that Groups.io should be whitelisted as a legit email service. I think this is happening because Earthlink had two major outages earlier this week on both the East and West Coasts. Both Groups.io and Meetup apparently have very short tolerances for SMTP retries before sending out the rather threatening edict, "You must take action to restore your account, or we will unsubscribe you from all of the groups you are a member of." I only got that message today, several days after the Earthlink outages occurred so at first I didn't put two and two together. I have been receiving messages from my Groups.io groups (I'm an owner of one) since Earthlink's service was restored so it was out of context when I eventually received this message from Groups.io today.

Virginia,
"You must take action to restore your account, or we will unsubscribeThat message shouldn't have been triggered by an outage. The bounce response of Groups.io is complex, mostly because it is designed to be tolerant of temporary delivery problems. Where it does have a short fuse is explicit rejection of group messages (a "permanent" or 5xy response code from the mailbox provider). I only got that message today, several days after the EarthlinkWas that notice dated from the time of the outage, or was it generated more recently? Looking at your subscription in GMF I see only the successful delivery of a bounce probe. That could be because the messages which bounced came from other groups (mods can only see activity related to their group). You can get a comprehensive (all groups) view of your Recent Bounces in your Account. That history might provide some illumination, especially if you see Reason codes in the 500-599 (permanent) range. This is now also happening to all three of the subscribers on my small (and new to groups.io) list who have earthlink.net email addresses. Tell them to visit the link below and follow directions found there. The IP address for Groups.io mail server is 66.175.222.12 They can also complain to Earthlink about non-spam mail from a MAILING LIST SERVICE like Groups.io being blocked. They don't block Yahoo or GoogleGroups, so why Groups.io? The info for doing that can be found here... I suggest initiating both a live chat and a phone call. If enough do that it will get their attention. They need to point out that Groups.io is a reputable and legitimate subscription mailing list service that requires subscribers to verify their intent to subscribe by verifying their email addresses... after which the messages from various interest groups hosted by Groups.io are solicited and are NOT spam. As Shal said, "Groups.io should be whitelisted as a legit email service." Having worked the abuse desk for a small local ISP quite some years ago, I'm aghast at the careless blocking practices being employed these days... and Gmail isn't the solution. Jim H |

Jim,
? ? ? ? ? Thanks for that.? On one of the groups I moderate this afternoon a message came in to the owner from a subscriber using Earthlink.? Thanks Shal for the details. The notice I got from Groups.io was dated yesterday and the last Earthlink outage was on Feb 27th, e.g. the message was generated more recently.
According to my group's Activity list, there were two Earthlink subscribers who bounced yesterday - myself and one other person - and another of my group members (also Earthlink) who bounced this afternoon. Apparently something is going on at Earthlink that is causing unusual behavior; outages of the breadth and duration that occurred twice this past week are rare, and now this bouncing problem. I expect they are related but not necessarily in an obvious way. |
Virginia,
Apparently something is going on at Earthlink that is causing unusualOf GMF's four members using earthlink.net, you and Junu are not bouncing (you've both presumably unbounced yourself); the other two are Bouncing with the same Reason that Junu reported. It looks a bit like the Unbounce operation clears your Recent Bounces list. Which may make sense. I expect they are related but not necessarily in an obvious way.Possibly, but as you say not obvious. Possibly a misconfigured server is causing havoc in a number of ways. Shal -- Help: /static/help More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |

Shal,
having the same problem with Earthlink -?550 IP 66.175.222.12 is blocked by EarthLink. Go to earthlink.net/block for details. You mention that Junu and Virginia presumably unbounced themselves.? How is that done?? What is the Unbounce Operation? Also, what does the Bounce Probe do? ? I sent one to those affected and see in the Recent Successful Delivery that the message was accepted. Thanks, Charles |
Charles You mention that Junu and Virginia presumably unbounced themselves.? How is that done?? What is the Unbounce Operation? One unbounces by responding to a bounce probe. I believe either by email reply or by clicking a link. Note though that this will not change Earthlink's behavior. If they're still blocking some messages addressed to you then you're likely to end up with Bouncing status again. Also, what does the Bounce Probe do? ? Tests whether the email account receives messages from Groups.io I sent one to those affected and see in the Recent Successful Delivery that the message was accepted. I think the member must take an overt action to complete the unbounce - either by replying to the message or clicking on a link in it. Though on a technical basis I'm not sure why the acceptance itself wouldn't be considered sufficient.
