groups.io will not accept a group's member's e.mail forward from gmail

开云体育

Some time ago I migrated all of my owned groups to groups.io from google groups.

A new group I created recently I have spent enormous hours on this trying all kinds of settings to get a gmail forward to work to no avail.

I created and own a group /g/p7j3q9k5 in order to distribute email from my 95 year old mother who has great difficulty using the computer.

I created her [email protected] membership using her gmail mhcgfx1b9j@...

I then set her groups.io setting to NOT receive any email from the group. Because it is intended to be only one way from her to group members AND to not create a forwarding loop. I have done this many times before with other groups.

Next I go to her gmail account settings and select forward to the group [email protected]

I auhorize with her gmail associated phone.

What happens next is groups.io rejects the gmail-sent confirmation email reporting one of the following two errors:

1. 510 5.1.1 Your email address, mhcgfx1b9j+caf_=p7j3q9k5=groups.io@..., is not subscribed to that group. To subscribe, send an email to [email protected], or visit /g/p7j3q9k5

or

2. 510 5.1.1 Your email address, forwarding-noreply@..., is not subscribed to that group. To subscribe, send an email to [email protected], or visit /g/p7j3q9k5

One has no control over what gmail sends when one requests to do a forward!

Also, I have a number of groups.io groups whereby I have used gmail addresses to be forwarded to groups.io!! BUT this was done some time ago yet ALL are still working!!

The above 2 errors happened under different circumstances while attempting to get the gmail to forward. The first was the initial attempt. That was AFTER gmail accepted the initial request to forward to [email protected]. gmail was happy. EXCEPT when an email came in to mhcgfx1b9j@... it would perform the forward to [email protected] BUT it would use the "decorated" email mhcgfx1b9j+caf_@... which subsequently groups.io would reject because mhcgfx1b9j was the member and NOT mhcgfx1b9j+caf_ !!!

The second was just now where I deleted the gmail forward and attempted to re-establish the SAME forward. This time gmail used the strange address forwarding-noreply@... which also is not a member.

How did gmail forwarding to groups.io EVER work? Did gmail change something recently that broke this?

I have attached a screenshot showing a number of log entries pertaining to both of these conditions.

I am at Witt's End to make what should be a trivial gmail forward to groups.io work for my elderly mother!

Also, I have found almost NOTHING on vast web searches on this topic!

A related one is here

Please help!

thanks

What about possibly adding the mhcgfx1b9j+caf_@... address to the group also? Or better yet, add it to her groups.io account as an alias, so sending from it will be allowed then.

Cheers,
Christos

Yes, forwarders will often mangle the sending address. And much of the reason for that is specifically to avoid dupe loops.
?
The best way to get this to work reliably is to set up an integration address in your group p7j3q9k5 and forward messages to that address instead.?
?
?
Please note that integrations are a feature of paid groups.

Bruce

I dont think that will work because the actual gmail is NOTmhcgfx1b9j+caf_ so when the groups.io add confirmation goes out to mhcgfx1b9j+caf_ that doesnt exist!

I dont know how to create an alias. I did some searching but didnt find it.

thanks

But then why do a number of my other gmail forwarders created several years ago STILL work? they were done in the same way. 1. create groups.io member with gmail address, 2. at gmail accept groups.io auth, 3. change groups.io member's email to "none" (to prevent loop), 4. change gmail to forward to groups.io, 5. accept the gmail confirmation ???

something must be broken...

True -if added to the group as a separate account-, but if you had a paid*** group you could direct-add her so no confirmation email would be sent out. (*** or setup an integration as Bruce mentioned)

But the alias part is no worry, there are no confirmation emails sent to an alias since it's not a regular account but just a nickname, so no group emails or whatnot will ever go to that alias. Aliases just allow someone to post something from a different email address but when posted it looks like it came from the main address, not the alias. All group messages (if this account was setup to receive them) would go to the main address, not the alias.

I dont know how to create an alias. I did some searching but didnt find it.

That info would be in the User manual, not the Owner manual, it's in here. You need to be logged in as her, go to the upper right of screen where the account settings are, all the way down click on Aliases, add the address and save.

Christos

ok i will try that....

but what I dont understand is that NOW (Condition 2 of my original post: 510 5.1.1 Your email address, forwarding-noreply@..., is not subscribed to that group. To subscribe, send an email to [email protected], or visit /g/p7j3q9k5)
groups.io is complaining that the gmail-sent email to confirm mom's new membership is not related to her email but rather forwarding-noreply@....

What you are saying is to log into my mom's groups.io and create an alias of forwarding-noreply@....

That just doesn't seem right either. What alias will I use for another, new group member that I want to forward their gmail to the group? It will report the SAME forwarding-noreply@......

Based on these facts how does ANYONE trying to forward a gmail to a groups.io work at all?

No one has addressed these facts. No one has addressed the fact that I have gmail forwards to some of my other groups that were created long ago do NOT HAVE THIS PROBLEM and no aliases and they work fine!

Something bad has happened at gmail and or groups.io that has broken this and no one has addressed this.

Long ago I moved all my goggle groups to groups.io and many had gmail forwards and NONE of them had this problem. Why can't someone explain why this is broken now and how to fix it. I dont have any "alias" for any of all these I setup long ago....

thanks for trying.

I've just set up email forwarding from a test gmail account I have to Groups.io and it works fine. I suspect the reason that Groups.io is rejecting the confirmation email is because you have not set Allow Nonmembers to Post in your Message Policies.

As you can see, if you don't have this, messages will be rejected.? When this is set, the confirmation message will be held in the pending message queue where you can view it and click on the confirmation link.? Once that is done, you need to go back to the Gmail account and enable the forwarding. You can also delete the confirmation message from the pending queue.

Hi Rich

Forgive me if I misunderstand you but you seem to be berating those in this group who are just trying to help you

This is not a support group of groups.io but rather group owners just like you who are experienced using groups.io

Not so fast.... The first actual use by my cell phone company sending it an email gets me that same error as before... gmail decorates the from address with +caf_

and groups.io rejects it:

510 5.1.1 Your email address, mhcgfx1b9j+caf_=p7j3q9k5=groups.io@..., is not subscribed to that group. To subscribe, send an email to [email protected], or visit /g/p7j3q9k5

This never happens with any of my other groups.io groups with gmail forwards! And none of the other groups allow anyone but members to send email to the group AND there are no "aliases" that other posters have talked about.

when I (I'm a group member) send an email to the forwarded gmail (mhcgfx1b9j@...) it gets processed correctly and there are no aliases and the group settings are still "members only can send".

Why is this STILL broken?

I'm back at Witt's End again!

The "alias" did not work!

This is the message log now for each attempt for gmail account mhcgfx1b9j to forward to [email protected]:

Non-member mhcgfx1b9j+caf_=p7j3q9k5=groups.io@... attempted to send message "Find Deals Near You With Your Twigby Discount Program" via email

And the member?is clearly there:

???? Mom ??? mhcgfx1b9j@... ??? No Email ??? Sep 7

And the alias is:

Aliases ??? mhcgfx1b9j+caf_@...

So the alias is in place and the member is correct but email forwarded from mhcgfx1b9j@... is STILL not being accepted and distributed to the group.

What next?

As I have repeatedly said, many other groups.io I have created in the past have never had this problem with forwarding from a gmail member AND never needed an "alias".

I'm at Witt's End!

Is it intentional that there is a space in the alias?

There is no space - just an underscore being obscured by the link underlining.

Before adding the alias the email sent back to the forwarder was simply "mhcgfx1b9j+caf_@..." is not a group member.

So I added the alias of the same...

Once that was done there are NO return emails to the forwarder! Yet groups.io logs what I have below and does not distribute to the group.

Are you now saying that the alias be changed from "mhcgfx1b9j+caf_@..." to "mhcgfx1b9j+caf_=p7j3q9k5=groups.io@..." ???

This appears arcane, even unnatural.

But I will give it a try.

Can't anyone explain why all my gmail forwards to other groups.io groups done months and years ago do not behave like this and without aliases? Someone who wrote these interfaces should know what is going on!!!

thanks

Have you compared the addresses and settings for this one with those that work? That would be the simplest way to see what's happening.? I suspect some small difference that you're not aware of yet.

There is no one from Groups.io here.? As noted on our home page, this is a peer-to-peer group of users that try to help others.? The only groups monitored by management are those in the .

That's what I'd also think, some small difference on the gmail account settings between one which works and this problem one.

One way to check this is, in your test group add both the problem one and a working gmail forwarding account, and set both to forward to that test group, and see if the problem one still doesn't work.

If you want I can add the problem account to a group of mine, then you can set it to forward to my group and then do a test to see what happens, see if I get the same error you get. If you want to do that contact me offlist.

Yes. That's the address that Groups.io is saying is not a member so that's what you should add as an alias.
