Groups.io site updates #changelog

Hi all,

This week's change log:

Feel free to reply to this topic if you'd like to comment on the
changes. Or better yet, if you expect a lot of discussion start a new
topic (or rejoin an existing one) about a specific change.

NEW: Added DD.MM.YYYY date format preference.
NEW: Group default subscription preferences for date and time display.
Yay, so now there are three unambiguous date formats. That is, you can always tell which you're looking at by the punctuation:
DD.MM.YYYY
MM/DD/YYYY
YYYY-MM-DD (ISO-8601)

NEW: Locked Group member notice.
The Help page needs a paragraph for this one. The text under the notice type when you create one isn't too informative: "Message returned when someone emails the group when it is locked."

It apparently relates to this:
NEW: For premium groups, you can now lock groups/subgroups, making
them read-only.

Has anyone here used that feature, and care to describe it? Either in a message or better yet, update the Help page mock-up.

BUGFIX: Changed references to 'sub' to 'member' in the activity log to
make things consistent. Changed several of the message actions to be
more clear.
That's one of my pet peeves, having the text of the filter items in the drop-list differ from the actual text of the log entries. However, this didn't move in the direction of consistent use of subscriber versus member.

CHANGE: When clicking the Subgroups tab while in a subgroup, don't
redirect to the parent group first.
Hmm... I'd been using that as the short way to get back to the primary group. I'll have to find another route.

CHANGE: Changed how we did code highlighting, now using the Google
code prettify JS instead of directly using the CSS classes.
Right now this is only for Markdown users. Adding it to the HTML message/wiki editor has been on the todo list for a while.

And I still wish I could change editing format ad-hock, from a control on the composition toolbar or the like, rather than having to go into Account Preferences.

Comments about these others are also welcome:

NEW: Polls have a new option to never show results to members.
INTERNAL: Moved S3 group deletion operations into the s3server for
async and more reliable operation.
NEW: In the Edit File dialog, you can now replace the existing file
with a new file.
NEW: Premium/Enterprise groups can now create aliases for subgroups
(previously they could only create aliases for main/parent groups).
NEW: More anti-spammer work.
NEW: Premium/Enterprise groups now have a new Banned Domains tab.
Emails from non-subscribers are rejected from banned domains, as
well as registrations.
BUGFIX: For subgroups that are unlisted but with open archives, the
feed link wasn't included on the group home page. Also, the archive
description was incorrect.
INTERNAL: Upgraded TinyMCE editor to latest version.

Please call out any you find significant.

Shal

I thought the "lock group" thing was peculiar when it first came up in beta -- a search of the message archive failed to turn up any request for the feature.?Then I discovered a button at the bottom of the Settings page; and when I clicked on it, a "verify lock" dialog box came up saying:

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?"Lock this group? Locking the group prevents any changes to the group, including messages, files, photos and databases."

That seems pretty self-explanatory.

I can only think of a couple of reasons why someone would want to do this....

-- to temporarily suspend activity while a backup is underway, or
-- as a prelude to shutting down the group (i.e.: using the Member Notice as a way of reminding the stragglers).

Hope this helps,
Bruce

NEW: Polls have a new option to never show results to members.
Can anyone explain to me why a poll would be made where the members could not see the results of their participation?

?It might be used as a "straw poll" or non-binding vote.? I've thought about using something like this to get an idea of whether group members would be interested in certain things.? One reason I'd do it this way is because many times folks just vote for the most popular answer without really thinking about the question.? I think not having the results available would be more indicative of true feelings on some groups.

I'm not sure if it would work, but I'd also consider making the results available (turning off this setting) once the poll was ready to be closed for most items.

Moderators and poll creators might not want to not reveal results which do not support an action that would be taken.
