Finally setting up my new groups, and have a few questions

Hello everyone! I am finally getting around to switching my groups to io, and last night set up my first new io group to mirror the yahoo group. I must admit that even as an experienced yahoo group owner, the number of options was a little daunting. And, my trying to mirror the existing the group led to a couple of moments of consternation. With that in mind, I have a couple of questions that are probably very simple, but I? hope you will be patient with me!

1) I am looking for advice - or is there a place it is already collected? - regarding this setup process - what did you regret, what did you learn, what do you wish you had done differently, what pitfalls cropped up that were not expected?

2) There is an option to allow group members to download the entire group archive. Is that exactly as it seems, and if so, what are the pros/cons on allowing that?

3) It seems the only setting that cannot be changed after setup is making a private group public. Is that true? If so, that eases the anxiety a bit, since I can always rethink and change what I did.

Thanks so much for any insight into these items!

Patti

1)? The best for you to start would be /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/home.

2)? I don't believe a regular member has the archive download option since it's on the Settings page, only moderators with the proper permissions or owners that can get to that page can do it.

3)? Yes, once a group is made private, it can't be made public later.? Everything else is open to change.

Patti,

Allow Members To Download Archives is a rather new option, and I doubt that very many have experience with it. I've not tested it myself.

But yes, I believe it is exactly as it seems. Note that the text below says "message archives", so unlike the "Export Group Data" feature available to moderators it would not include options to download other parts of the group (files, photos, etc.).

One thing I'd want to know before enabling it is whether it delivers the full content of the messages, including header information such as the poster's email address. If so I definitely would NOT enable it on a group with unrestricted membership. Actually I probably wouldn't enable it on an open group in either case.
